Star Wars Galactic Racer Preview — Full Breakdown & Transcript

[00:00] Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I'm John, the Suspending Screwner from BugCon, to a Star Wars Galactic Racer, which I got my hands on just a little bit early, and I'm excited about that, because, say what you will about the Star Wars People's Trilogy,

[00:16] Pod Racing was cool, but the Star Wars Episode I Racer, the game about our convention, Pod Racing, that was bloody good as well, so, you know what, it's nice to see Star Wars finally going back to racing.

[00:29] So yes, let's just jump on in and see what's waiting for his chance to die. I wanted racing back.

[00:41] The way it was. The way it should be. It nearly became extinct. The Empire thought of that. Pod racing may be the ultimate racing form, but hardly anyone in the galaxy can fly them.

[00:56] In my league, it's Peter, but like you've never seen him before. Take my guy, Zorazak. Part of a rebel, and yet he slides a land speeder around like he's got nothing to lose.

[01:15] And okay, we're just explaining it with Zorazak's AI. Right, I may not have much experience in racing games, but I do understand that, yes, hold down right trigger and go. That's generally a good starting point, yes.

[01:29] Oh, also I've got a seat up button. So, right, energy, you can spend on speeding up if you want to. God bless me, a good idea if you want to, like, you know, go faster, adopt a win, no tax, and also, thrift if I want to.

[01:45] So right in the environmentalist corner, the, I don't know, total of the world top, hold an axe, or three simple bow fires. Also speaking of which, I think I just killed that Peter Pie. Good, good, good, good. You can just smash the hell out of everything if you want, so.

[04:47] over how much to close and what not, but every single one of them comes with a cape. Capes are just compulsory in this racing league, and as a result, 10 out of 10 give me the DR. Oh and here's fun, part of the difficulty is crash allowance, so the number of times

[05:02] you're about to like, you know, smash into a wall before you actually properly lose, so, oh that's fun. We'll start with normal difficulty for now, yes. Or we even get to wander around on the ground too.

[05:14] So, oh my goodness, there's those tiny pit roids from episode one. I love those tiny pit roids from episode one. They were great. So, okay, we've got some of those guys to help us out. But on getting next, we need to, yeah, select a vehicle.

[05:30] Hopefully we'll be able to explain to what each of them does this time. Or alternatively, right. The tag team we might have... I think that's a speeder. The first of the three things.

[05:42] Because it's, you know, not a bike. It doesn't have little wings or whatnot. So, okay. Getting like, you know, this basic Space Peugeot 306 or whatever. This is what we're going to be starting off with.

[08:24] Before we arm that, get up close, because I can't boost while I'm arming my ramjet, they're using the same currency or whatever. So, right, just boost, and, so, no that's my ramjet, it's using my regular energy, see, actually hang on.

[08:41] No, they're not on the same currency, sorry, think I may have been misreading that. So, yes, I can use, hang on, that basically has double boosted that tank. Ok, did I? I can use my regular boost to get some speed up. So right, now going for the...

[11:55] So I'm not allowed to do anything. But yeah, some backwater racers here on Chico. In fact, actually, yeah, this racing game is kind of structured like a roguelike. It starts off with, yes, a basic car with only some simple abilities that we've already seen.

[12:11] But yeah, I need to improve this thing if I want to win the big race, though. So yeah, I need to choose a path that takes me from Jakku onto the more prestigious races elsewhere, etc., etc.

[12:25] And if I crash out too much, I don't know how many times, but a certain number of times, I'm wrecked, and I lose a lead token, and that's how I lose the entire run, and I have to start over. I win, however, yet it's completely the event at all, lets me improve my car,

[12:41] but money comes from a podium position. So yeah, I'm looking very badly damaged. There's potential arguments for driving safely and just getting a home at all. Okay, let's just jump on in and see how yes, progression works here.

[12:57] So, assuming the first race can't be that bloody difficult. And yes, are we doing the same scratch I just did? No, debris juice. That's definitely different. Okay, just be ready to activate everything.

[15:24] The problem with being first is, I don't know what was going on, but there was no one in front of me. Ok, I don't know where to go. I'm potentially out. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. Give him a little nudge there, then a mama.

[16:03] How much boost is provided by Ramjet? That's pretty good actually, because yeah, one, that lets me literally speed ahead, and two, that means I'm better able to hit people I'm coming up behind.

[16:15] That should be one whooping knife in terms of, yeah, using my shield. But I didn't remember I had a shield in the last race, so maybe don't worry about that. Cornering's a properly good idea too. But no, let's go for the ramjet. The ramjet's amusing.

[16:43] So I could do, like, you know, a secret behind-the-scenes deal, which I could just turn down, or alternatively, yeah, have more upgrade choices for less money, or, yeah, more money for less upgrade options.

[16:57] You know what? I will take more upgrade options, because, yeah, if I could do two upgrades instead of one, That's a huge increase in power potential, are you? So go on then, not sure how this dodgy deal is supposed to work precisely, but I'll take it.

[17:10] So, next up, a new event, a field test. So we're not racing it here, we're flying solo in a new vehicle. And if I do well, I'm flying. That's a lot of flipping and bonuses.

[17:23] So, OK, I've got myself a new vehicle, and I need to beat 212 across two lines. Oh we're just going are we? Ok well that's fine

[18:16] so that's the tunnel, almost mid-dip, almost wedged right into a wall that would be bad, so we'll take straight through it here, that's fine I'm just relying on my Jedi bloody reflexes right now because I think the trait is coming up at the end there on the right.

[19:11] so much in the tunnels because you know bad things happen so you know what we're going to have to make it happen anyway so here we go and then once we're in the tunnels yeah just use regular boost when I think I can see oh bloody hell I can't remember how the

[19:29] tunnels like go or whatever but this seems pretty good all things considered so right this way and then I can gas activate everything and go go go go go! Only John. Okay I had like four seconds to spare there but the second lap was definitely

[19:46] faster than the first. So okay that presumably gets me a lot of things. But yeah I'm gonna say after burning block two for a big increase in speed

[19:58] that's gotta be the right thing. However now we get to something new. An ability pack and I quite like the idea of a yak 10 seconds over searching. If I hit someone

[20:10] I lose it but if I overtake someone it extends duration so... OK, that's the ability for people who are good at driving and aren't just ramming everybody. I'm not sure that's

[20:22] the ability for me therefore but OK hang on. The ramjet reaches out as quickly and gains quickly gain speed more. Ooooooh! I could activate the zap and then I could ram for longer.

[20:35] You know what? Sure, that sounds far. And speaking of which, okay. We've now got an Eliminator. So, we keep doing it

[20:47] but only three people are standing. And that trio gets a lot of staff, but everyone else loses a League token and therefore possibly So you know, you crash out of this attack So ok, activate my afterburner, activate my shield, activate my vest

[21:02] So, like, too many abilities, you won't be able to turn them all bloody on in time But ok This is a new track, I've not seen this before, but hang on Then you want to be in this bit don't you? Yeah, that's good

[35:54] So yeah, a little boost to cornering speed and ramjet. Yes, that feels like a good investment, dammit. And I can even unlock a new trait for my driver, if I like, you know, play in a certain way as well.
