AI or Human? Spotting AI Art — Full Breakdown & Transcript

[00:01] We're back at it again with another game of is this AI or is this real? Let's delve into these posts. So, this is the first one on r/isthisai and it reads, "This artist posts new works almost daily. It feels very suspicious to me.

[00:15] have our very first image. It's of a fairy hedgehog holding a little raspberry. It's in a little field with some mushrooms and some flowers in front of them and you can see a hand holding a pencil. And then here second frame, we

[00:28] have the finished version. Now, they're holding a color pencil and the hedgehog was a blackberry, not a raspberry, so I was wrong there. Here we see another pencil drawing. This one is of a snake in some flowers. Here we have the

[00:42] penciled version of the snake. Here we have a fox reading a book, a bee in some wine and cheese, and here we have some drawing processes. So, let's take a one of those where people are like, "Hmm, this is a bit of a red flag. Maybe

[00:55] it is AI generated. Maybe it's not." A little bit harder to tell. Sometimes the why they're posting so frequently. Sometimes the artist just draws fast, which is another option. One of these, when it comes to the pencil drawing side

[01:07] by side, when we have a pencil drawing and then it becomes a final drawing, it's also kind of looking at like inconsistencies cuz if AI generates it, of times they will generate a pencil drawing and then in the final version,

[01:20] it will be different. And again, an artist is completely allowed to change a something. Maybe what they want to remove it. But AI will make like changes that kind of just doesn't really make sense. Like for instance, they would

[01:32] change the number of spokes on the crown. Again, sometimes there is a reason as to why it's done. Maybe, not always. Other things to look for is also post I talked about a while ago, which is a guy that is like doing a pencil

[01:45] drawing that was very AI generated and one of the inconsistencies was the signature on the page that he showed a close-up of was like one size and then signature somehow shrunk. That just doesn't happen. That That's just odd.

[01:58] Like the detailing in the background elements look really consistent. The person's hand has like you know, everyone's like wrinkles look different. like a V right here in this line. I mean, you can see that same V present in

[02:12] this hand as well. This pencil looks correct, right? It's not like a pencil that. Yeah, it's like the same hand holding the pencil. Other elements that clues. You know, has this artist been drawing like this for years? So, they

[02:25] pencil drawings. Then, yeah, it makes a lot of sense. We have some product photos make sense. It's not like the fish is warping from like one drawing to another. The you know, lily pads are moving somewhere. So, let's see what the

[02:41] "People don't really grayscale and add color on top because it makes all the colors muddy because it spreads everywhere. I'm leaning towards AI." of time to meticulously shade everything in grayscale to that level is a piece of

[02:56] art in itself. Then to basically start again with color?" Another person says, grayscale unless the final piece is grayscale. This is a digital art thing." then, some people started adding their two cents. A user says, "I own original

[03:11] art by this artist. It's real. You can even see the strokes in person." And artwork where you can see all the little details in the brush stroke. You can see the side. Here we have another photo where you can see they're tilting a

[03:25] strokes over here and some more strokes on the cake. And you can see there is adds, "She details her process online. She does grayscale, then a coffee wash colored pencils and some paint. She's been supporting herself with art since

[03:40] this for decades." Another person writes, "This is Delphine Malador. Her work is real. She's been active since long before AI and has videos of her drawing live. I don't know why she uses this technique, but it's real. And

[03:53] doesn't post artwork almost daily. She has 167 posts total and most of them are of her drawing process. There is that grayscale beneath it and then she is this artist page and scroll all the way down, they literally have drawings in

[04:08] the same pencil realistic style back in like 2018. And this is an animal same subject. Other people in the comments are kind of talking about the artist process saying that like they grayscale and pencil she seems to

[04:21] over the grayscale, so it doesn't muddy the color and then color on top of that. So, the final verdict for this is not AI. Next up, we have this post that reads, "Am I just tired or are these Etsy stickers AI? Scared I might be

[04:34] don't trust my eyes. I know the background is a generic one, but could the art be theirs or is it just AI throughout? The letters are especially throwing me off. I know the weird bubbly AI style came from somewhere and I did

[04:47] see similar stuff before the AI boom, but I'm not sure." So, we only have one like they're like hand holding the sticker is photoshopped over some sort of background. So, you know, there is that. And it says, "I'm sorry for what I

[05:00] said when my blood sugar was low." So, it's like a little diabetes joke. It features a droplet of blood that looks really sad that says blood drop and then a meter that says meter and then a piece of chocolate that says snack snack. Off

[05:13] of one image, it's a little bit harder to tell if something is AI generated or the artist's work, you get a lot more context. Because this art style is very tell. Sometimes it's always like, "Oh, well, this could be like an art style,

[05:27] the doubt. I don't know what this is. This is a needle. I don't know what this is supposed to be. The only person in my family with diabetes is in China, so I don't know how the tools look like, so maybe it is something that a diabetic

[05:39] think is a little bit interesting is if you look at it, there is ever ever ever ever ever so slightly the faintest shade of yellow in the background as a on the bottom. If you like up the contrast, you can see there is like a

[05:52] white trim on the bottom, like a white stroke outline, and then it's just not interesting because it's so faint, it's almost naked to the, you know, the human depending on how good your printer is, it might not even show up. Maybe the

[06:05] artist chose to add that as a gradient in the background, but that could also like an AI slop filter." You know what I'm saying? How they all kind of look a little yellowish. A comment says, "Yeah, I think it's AI. Writing blood drop next

[06:19] to a blood drop is weird. Same with the meter. The meter also looks weird. I diabetes, but the AI probably focused on the diabetes aspect of it more than the cute don't talk to me before my morning coffee aspect. It also looks fake."

[06:32] Another person zoomed into the thing that I, you know, pointed out, and they Low-key looks like a tampon, sorry." Somebody said, "I'm diabetic, and that maybe is a sad attempt at a lancet." By the way, can we appreciate how bad the

[06:44] said when my blood sugar levels was low." End quote. "No one I ever met in my entire life said something weird when their blood glucose levels was low. This is a very lazy way to monetize sickness, and I hate it." And about the lancet,

[06:57] somebody added an image of a lancet, and they were like, "Maybe it could be this and underneath is a needle." Not justifying the AI design choice, it's just odd. And somebody said, "A syringe that's missing a needle?" And somebody

[07:10] did a little search in Open AI, adding, "There are a few GPT image to Hallmark there, but also some Synth ID. And it's as generated with Open AI tools. Synth ID detected, we found a Synth ID watermark that originated from Open AI."

[07:23] And on that note, this was marked solved AI. Next up, we have a book, and it doing inventory for my local elementary school." And the caption reads, "This book was published in 2024 or 2025. I can't remember when exactly." And I'm

[07:38] wondering if it's AI because the goat and ram looks way too out of place. It's my first post. And it says, "Never tie yourself to a marshmallow" by Stars C. Carlson. And here we have a bunch of farm animals on what looks to be a farm,

[07:50] maybe a garden. There is a cross-eyed goat in the front with some flowers behind them in the garden, and there is a duck, and then two chickens, and a tabby cat who has three legs instead of four. Hey, you know, we love a cute

[08:04] feature character of your book, you would probably draw them with four legs. looks really odd in many aspects. We have a barn with like a door. The hinges are all facing different directions. So, we have hinges on both the right and the

[08:19] is broken. Whoever built this fence needs to be fired. And the flowers are giving real artifacty looking vibes. These ones look like bananas. These ones these ones, I don't really know what's happening here. And then finally, also

[08:35] the shingles on the roof of the little barn are all melting into each other, and the frame for this window for the barn, somehow the wood panel becomes both the frame for the window and cuts off at the same time. This author only

[08:48] has one other book called Slurpy Derpy and the Fancy Pancake. And it features a cartoon girl with a little fish jumping out of some water. The background doesn't give me confidence that this is hand-drawn as well. The flowers here

[09:01] melting into each other, and not all birds have two wings. This one looks like a plane. So, it's looking a little suspicious here. Not feeling really also, I do want to add, there are times

[09:14] their books that books can be hand written, and the author commission an artist for the cover, paid an artist, and was scammed with AI without knowing. So, don't go and fault the author necessarily cuz they may not know. The

[09:26] cat, and it says, "The cat only has three legs, but I can't tell if that's intentional." Another person says, "The cat, bro, look at the fence behind the hinges on the shed door don't make any sense because I'm pretty sure they're

[09:40] supposed to be hinges. So they'd have to be on the side and also on one side. human. You could argue that's the art style but other animals aren't really like that. So yes, I do think it's AI. And another person said the yellow flag

[09:52] I see is that there's no illustrator name. I remember children's books saying who the illustrator is. I'm sure that's still a thing so naming just the author seems odd. And it was flagged as being solved AI. So at the end of this what
