Porsche 911 Buying Guide
40sThis segment sets up the entire video with a clear, high-value promise, using urgency and direct address to hook viewers looking for buying advice.
▶ Play ClipThis video provides a comprehensive guide to buying a Porsche 911, covering all generations from the original 1964 air-cooled models to the modern water-cooled iterations. The presenter breaks down the history, performance, and investment potential of key models like the 964, 993, and 996, and offers practical advice for prospective buyers at various budget levels.
The 911 is Porsche's flagship track-tackling sports car, known for its confident styling and versatility.
Porsche dropped the first 911 in 1964 with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, a platform that lasted over 50 years.
The Carrera RS (Ren Sport) featured a larger 2.7L engine, mechanical fuel injection, bigger brakes, and wider rear hips.
Introduced turbocharging, producing 260 hp via a 4-speed manual, with a distinctive 'whale tail' rear spoiler.
A futuristic facelift with a 3.6L air-cooled boxer motor; the 964 Turbo and RS America are highly sought after and expensive.
The last air-cooled 911; considered beautiful and commands high prices (base Carrera at least $50k, Turbos $100k+).
Porsche moved to water-cooling due to performance limitations of air-cooled engines and financial pressures; the 996 is criticized for its unusual headlights and interior.
The 996 suffers from a potential IMS bearing failure; fix it immediately if buying. Repair costs around $25k for a new motor.
The 997, only two years newer, drives 20 years newer and feels more modern; the 996 drives more like older air-cooled models.
The 911 is a good investment overall, with air-cooled models appreciating significantly. The 996 is the best deal for entry; 993/964 are strong investments.
The video concludes that the Porsche 911, across all generations, offers a unique combination of driving engagement, reliability, and value retention, making it a standout sports car. It recommends the 996 for budget-conscious buyers and the 964 or 993 for those seeking strong investment potential.
"The title accurately promises a comprehensive buying guide for the Porsche 911, and the video delivers exactly that, covering history, pros/cons, and investment advice."

10:37911 as a wise investment
The claim that European banks recommended classic 911s as investments underscores the model's unique value retention.
15:29[00:00] Unless you've been living under a rock,
[00:02] you recognize the confident and iconic
[00:04] styling of a Porschee's flagship track
[00:06] tackling sports car, the 911. And these
[00:09] little land missiles were built to tear
[00:11] up the turns at the racetrack or to get
[00:12] you from the driveway to the office
[00:14] comfortably. Whatever it is you plan to
[00:16] do with your 911 Carrera, or if you can
[00:18] get your hands on the ultra rare RS
[00:20] America, which is about pretty much
[00:22] impossible these days, you got to watch
[00:25] this vid. We're going to tell you about
[00:26] all the different Porsche 911 models and
[00:28] dig into which ones bring the most
[00:30] firepower and which ones need to be
[00:32] double inspected and which ones you can
[00:34] buy today and sell tomorrow for a
[00:36] profit. Here's everything that you need
[00:38] to know before buying a Porsche 911.
[00:41] Let's go.
[00:43] [Music]
[00:45] It's one of the most iconic and easily
[00:48] identifiable cars on the road. Other
[00:50] than a well loose resemblance to the
[00:52] Volkswagen Beetle, there's absolutely no
[00:54] mistaking the incredible Porsche 911
[00:56] Carrera for any other car. I mean, just
[00:59] look at this thing. Seriously, you guys,
[01:02] those hips, this rear end. I absolutely
[01:07] love it. Give it a Nobel Prize, baby.
[01:10] Okay, aren't Nobel prizes for like books
[01:12] and stuff? It's also one of the best
[01:13] performance cars out there, period.
[01:16] Providing limitless levels of driver
[01:18] engagement. And of course, that prestige
[01:20] that enthusiasts just want out of a
[01:22] Porsche. And yes, they still offer that
[01:25] manual transmission, which if you want
[01:27] to save the manuals, go check out our
[01:29] limited edition Ideal T. It's our
[01:31] bestseller. And for those of you that
[01:32] don't want to row your own gears, they
[01:34] have the records shattering PDK dual
[01:36] clutch gearbox. That's still a wonderful
[01:38] choice.
[01:44] Woo!
[01:45] Porsche dropped the first 911 back in
[01:48] 1964 and fixed it up with an air cooled
[01:51] rear-mounted engine behind the rear
[01:53] axle. What were they thinking? And yet
[01:55] somehow that platform lasted over 50
[01:59] years and spawned hundreds of limited
[02:01] editions and of course a couple RSR race
[02:03] cars that snagged the crown. It even
[02:05] paved the path for the 935 Turbo which
[02:08] is just straight manic. And that puppy
[02:10] took home the trophy in the 1979 Lemon.
[02:13] This car is truly the granddaddy of
[02:16] gravel gripping, geforce pushing
[02:18] performance automotives. I think I just
[02:20] dented like the hood a little bit. And I
[02:22] think most of us know today that the 911
[02:25] is still a great buy because enthusiasts
[02:27] appreciate its pedigree, precision,
[02:29] driver engagement, reliability, and not
[02:31] to mention incredible value. Everyone
[02:34] knows that when you buy a Porsche, you
[02:36] expect it to stick to the highest
[02:38] possible standards, and they're really
[02:41] way up here. And I'm the first to admit
[02:43] that everybody has their own perception
[02:44] of a Porsche owner.
[02:46] European midlife crisis mobilebile.
[02:48] But I think that those people that judge
[02:51] just don't really know what it's like to
[02:52] be in one of these sleek speeders and
[02:54] what bang forbuck they provide that most
[02:57] of the luxury class just can't really
[02:59] touch.
[02:59] You can't touch this.
[03:00] Just about every iteration of the
[03:02] Porsche 911 in the last decade has
[03:04] appreciated significantly. And that
[03:06] bubble is not going to burst anytime
[03:08] soon. And if you want to learn how to
[03:10] buy a Porsche like a pro, go check out
[03:12] the Ideal Car Strategies. And for the
[03:14] longest time, Porsche was rolling out
[03:16] aircooled 911s from 1964 all the way
[03:18] until 1998. And you got the OGs, the
[03:21] originals, the 911E, the 911 L, the SNT
[03:26] models. And these are all ideal cars
[03:28] that Brad Danger himself would
[03:30] absolutely keep in my stable. And of
[03:32] course, people love these old 911s
[03:34] because of their age and history. But as
[03:36] far as driving dynamics go, they aren't
[03:38] really all that impressive. Well, yes,
[03:40] they are probably pretty good for their
[03:42] age, I would still say a well-tuned
[03:44] Ferrari like the 365 would eat the
[03:47] Porsche's lunch. And if I can take you
[03:48] guys back to 1973, that brought the
[03:52] Carrera RS, one of my favorite cars of
[03:55] all time. And the RS stands for
[03:56] something extremely special, Ren Sport.
[03:59] And that means raceport in the oh so
[04:01] scary language of German. And that RS
[04:03] was built with a larger 2.7 L engine
[04:06] over the standard Carrera. And it got go
[04:08] fast bits like mechanical fuel
[04:09] injection, bigger brakes, wider wheels
[04:11] and tires, those huge widen rear hips,
[04:14] and of course that essential race stiff
[04:16] suspension. And then just a couple years
[04:18] later in 1975, we were first introduced
[04:20] to the Widow Maker, the 930 Turbo. And
[04:25] with this model, Porsche hopped onto the
[04:26] turbocharging trend. And the 911 waved
[04:29] goodbye to the naturally aspirated
[04:31] motor. And this upgrade gave the 930 an
[04:34] impressive 260 horsepower which was
[04:36] pushed through its four-speed manual
[04:38] transmission. Yeah, thing is still
[04:40] pretty old, you know, like old school,
[04:42] but like old school cool because this
[04:45] thing had the in-your-face rear spoiler
[04:48] known as the whale tail. And then when
[04:50] we fast forward to 1989 when the 964
[04:53] came out, it was the most futuristic
[04:55] modern facelift of the 911 that Porsche
[04:58] had ever done. Now, this design, in my
[05:00] opinion, has aged like fine wine and
[05:02] still looks stunning even today. But did
[05:05] you know just 10 or so years ago, this
[05:07] was like the least soughtafter aircooled
[05:09] model ever. And you could pick these
[05:11] things up all day long for the low 20s.
[05:13] Stupid planes. And now you're not even
[05:15] touching one for at least double, if not
[05:17] triple that price. And I think that
[05:19] that's what the 996 911s are going to be
[05:21] doing in the next couple years. But
[05:22] we'll get to that in just a minute
[05:24] because the 964
[05:26] [Music]
[05:29] not only looked the part, but had a
[05:31] beast under the hood, a 3.6 L air cooled
[05:35] boxer motor. And then in 1990, its big
[05:38] brother would join the lineup, the
[05:39] Turbo, which is one of the most badass
[05:41] air cooled 911s ever built and helped
[05:44] solidify that the 964 is one of the most
[05:46] popular generations of 911 ever. And
[05:49] year after year, they continue to
[05:50] impress me with how much they continue
[05:53] to appreciate. But the 964 wasn't done
[05:55] with that turbo. Oh no, they also had
[05:57] the RS and RS America models. And these
[05:59] equally as slick whips are well worth
[06:01] into the six figures today. Yeah,
[06:04] nothing to snooze about. And I have a
[06:05] feeling that they're going to continue
[06:06] to appreciate because there was only 701
[06:09] RS Americas shipped to US soil. And
[06:11] finding an RS America, which is one of
[06:13] my ideal cars, especially one that is
[06:16] somewhat affordable, is about as easy as
[06:19] finding the actual Lucky Charms guy at
[06:21] the end of the rainbow. Yeah, ain't
[06:22] going to happen. But that doesn't mean
[06:24] that I I should stop looking, right?
[06:25] because these things just look sick.
[06:29] [Music]
[06:32] Now, the 964 would eventually give birth
[06:34] to its predecessor, the 993 in 1994. And
[06:38] love it or hate it, it is a beautiful
[06:40] baby. And it's even more modern looking
[06:42] and just as gorgeous as the 964. And
[06:45] when a lot of people think air cooled
[06:46] Porsche, they think the 993. And that's
[06:49] probably why this model is fetching
[06:50] massive sums of money today. And just
[06:53] about every single Porsche enthusiast on
[06:55] this planet respects them. And of
[06:57] course, they came out with a turbo. I
[06:59] don't know if I'd get the 964 RS America
[07:01] or the 993 Turbo instead, which if you
[07:05] want to check out me absolutely ripping
[07:06] one, check out this ideal vid up here. I
[07:09] love that car. And those 993 Turbos are
[07:12] $100,000 plus all day long. And even the
[07:15] leastloved base Carrera model in the
[07:18] ugliest color combination that you could
[07:20] possibly imagine is still fetching at
[07:21] least $50,000 in decent shape. And then
[07:24] Porsche did something drastic. They made
[07:27] the jump from the air cooled to the
[07:28] water cooled after the 993. And it was
[07:31] partly because they had exhausted all
[07:33] the performance they could get out of an
[07:35] aircooled. And they were also fighting
[07:36] off bankruptcy and had to massroduce the
[07:39] Porsche 911. And so desperate times call
[07:41] for desperate measures. and they built
[07:44] the 996.
[07:45] That is the ugly, forgotten grandchild
[07:48] that no one wants to hear about in the
[07:50] Porsche family.
[07:51] Porsche is an engineering firm first.
[07:53] You know, Porsche design. They make
[07:54] clothes. They make furniture. Heck, they
[07:57] even do architecture. And Porsche is
[08:00] competitive, so they don't want to be
[08:01] left behind their competitors. And the
[08:03] water cooled engine was necessary to
[08:05] keep up with those cheeky carcrafters
[08:07] over at Ferrari. And this water cooled
[08:08] flat 6 really changed how much they
[08:11] could push their new boxer motor. And
[08:13] what they gained in performance, they
[08:15] kind of lacked in noise and character.
[08:17] Naturally, water cooled engines just
[08:19] don't sound as badass as air cooled. But
[08:22] Porsche was really doing something
[08:24] extreme with the 996. And that's why I
[08:27] love it so much because they didn't just
[08:29] push the envelope and piss off a ton of
[08:31] enthusiasts with the water cooled
[08:32] engine, but they also did something
[08:34] really interesting with their design. I
[08:36] think it goes without saying that this
[08:37] is one of the best rear ends on any
[08:40] Porsche really ever. It is so iconic.
[08:44] It's so classic. And as we come around
[08:46] those big wide hips and that 911
[08:49] silhouette until you get to Oh, come on.
[08:53] Porsche. What were you thinking? Let's
[08:56] talk about these headlights. Yeah,
[08:58] Porsche with the 996 is known for those
[09:00] ugly duckling headlights. And on the
[09:02] 996.1s,
[09:04] they may or may not look like egg yolks.
[09:07] And this is a 996.2 with the upgraded
[09:09] headlights. And I I mean, I'm learning
[09:11] to love, right? But as you can see here,
[09:13] there is that circle that's been around
[09:15] since 1964. And then they added this,
[09:17] which actually is a throwback to the
[09:19] Porsche GT1 race car. So yeah, these are
[09:23] race car lights. But that's not the only
[09:24] place that Porsche kind of screwed up.
[09:27] Let's uh take a look at the interior.
[09:29] This interior is a little bit awkward.
[09:33] It hasn't aged very well, and it looks a
[09:37] little bit like a '90s Taurus.
[09:40] Yeah, I mean, it's not horrible, but
[09:43] it's not really their best effort. Or or
[09:46] maybe it was. Yes, some of the design
[09:47] language on the interior as well as the
[09:50] exterior draws a little bit of mockery
[09:52] from Porsche Purists, but as a result,
[09:55] these have not really started to
[09:57] appreciate until recently. And so that's
[09:59] why I bought one and I kind of like it.
[10:02] And like I said before, my dad's always
[10:04] told me you can learn to love. And I'm
[10:05] I'm actually learning to love the 996.
[10:07] And if you're someone that's trying to
[10:09] buy the deal, well, there's no better
[10:11] deal than a 996 911. And it's easily the
[10:14] most accessible way to get into one of
[10:16] the best sports cars of all time.
[10:18] Because make no mistake whatsoever, this
[10:21] Porsche drives like a Porsche. It sounds
[10:23] like a Porsche cuz it is a Porsche 911.
[10:27] And the best part is that these are
[10:28] actually fairly easy to maintain both on
[10:31] the pocketbook as well as there's a lot
[10:33] of stuff you can do it yourself. Except
[10:34] it was plagued with one thing called the
[10:37] IMS RMS LOL. It is a pretty big problem.
[10:41] And this car actually had the issue
[10:44] happen. Yes, that's why it now has a 4
[10:46] L. It should have a 3.6 L in it, which
[10:48] I'm not complaining at all. The car is
[10:50] way too much fun to drive now. But it
[10:52] did cost about $25,000 for a new motor.
[10:54] And so if I could give you one piece of
[10:56] advice when buying the 996 is that if
[10:58] the IMS has not been addressed, get that
[11:01] fixed immediately. Don't screw around.
[11:03] Drive it straight to the repair shop and
[11:05] get it done. But don't be turned off by
[11:07] this gen because although this fix is a
[11:09] matter of life or death, it won't cost
[11:11] you an arm and a leg to do it. And once
[11:13] that IMS has been taken care of, you're
[11:16] going to have a bunch of 911 motoring
[11:17] bliss. And the 996 will be just as
[11:20] reliable as any other generation 911,
[11:22] which they're actually, this is my third
[11:24] one, and it's really reliable. And a guy
[11:26] can never have too many Porsche 911s
[11:28] because, well, I also have a 997 911 in
[11:32] the stable. And although it might only
[11:34] be 2 years newer than this 04 C4S 996,
[11:38] it drives like it's 20 years newer. It's
[11:41] a much more modern iteration of the 911
[11:44] Carrera. And don't get me wrong, this
[11:45] car is awesome, but it drives a lot more
[11:48] like a Gbody or an aircooled. And the
[11:50] 997, it's really the last of the analog
[11:53] cars, but it just feels a lot more
[11:55] contemporary inside and out. See, you
[11:57] got the 997 generation that goes back to
[12:00] those oval headlights. And then you got
[12:01] the 991 gen and the brand spanking new
[12:05] 992. And every single one of these
[12:07] generations of this incredible car can
[12:09] put the hammer down at the racetrack as
[12:11] well as keep that eaten grin on your
[12:13] face as you drive to work. The 911 is
[12:16] one of the most pure driving experiences
[12:18] ever. And right now, there's very little
[12:21] variance between a minty air cooled and
[12:24] a modern version. And remember how
[12:26] earlier I was talking about how Porsche
[12:27] would come out with the turbo cars like
[12:29] the 1975 or the 993? In 2017, they
[12:33] decided to turbocharge literally
[12:35] everything with the 991.2.
[12:38] And yes, they completely eliminated that
[12:40] naturally aspirated Boxer 6. And with
[12:43] that performance metrics were hiked up
[12:45] significantly, but it did come at a
[12:47] cost. That mechanical Sonata that those
[12:49] regular flat 6 had, well, they went away
[12:52] and it was replaced with something like
[12:54] this.
[12:57] Yeah, it's kind of muffled, gruff
[12:59] grumble that maybe reminds you of a
[13:02] Subaru. I guess poor one went out for
[13:04] the longlost purr. But the 992 came out
[13:06] in 2020, and yes, it's a stunning feat
[13:09] of technology and engineering. No doubt
[13:10] about it. But I feel like every new
[13:12] generation has lost a little bit of that
[13:14] passion over the years. You see, the
[13:16] Porsche 911 is special for a variety of
[13:19] reasons. And being a presenter for a
[13:21] YouTube channel, I should probably be
[13:23] driving something like a MarkV Supra or
[13:25] one of those Subaru STI. But no, I drive
[13:28] a Porsche 911. And there's a very good
[13:30] reason for that. Not only is it an
[13:32] amazing driving car that can pull in a
[13:34] straight line regardless of the humble
[13:35] horsepower numbers, but it's also one of
[13:37] the most capable canyon carvers and will
[13:39] shatter records at most technical tracks
[13:41] around the world. And that's even stock.
[13:43] Plus, it's one of the only cars of this
[13:45] caliber that won't kill your wallet on
[13:47] maintenance. And I don't know how they
[13:49] do it because these are pretty
[13:50] mass-produced cars, but they just don't
[13:52] really suffer from the depreciation
[13:53] curve. If you're looking to buy a
[13:55] Porsche 911 right now, there's pretty
[13:57] much a limitless number of them on the
[13:59] market at just about every price point.
[14:01] If you're looking to spend 20 grand or
[14:03] less, you're looking at a 996 911, which
[14:06] is not a bad view. But if you're looking
[14:08] for more of a waterfront property and
[14:10] your budget is a little less restricted,
[14:12] you could also get yourself into
[14:14] something that's a little bit more track
[14:15] focused like the 996 GT3, which is
[14:18] easily the most accessible of the GT3s
[14:21] today. And it's still a hardcore track
[14:23] scorching monster that is going to
[14:25] continue to go up in value. Really, the
[14:27] only risk here with the 996 is that
[14:29] you'll have some purists scoff at you
[14:31] and tell you that your headlights are
[14:32] ugly or, you know, that your interior
[14:34] looks like a '90s Taurus, which they're
[14:36] not wrong. Well, at least with the
[14:38] interior. But don't listen to those guys
[14:40] because it's still a legit 911. And for
[14:43] those of you looking for a 911 that is a
[14:45] good investment, look no further than
[14:47] the 993 or the 964. Of course, the more
[14:51] that you can afford, the better, but the
[14:52] turbo and RS models are easily the most
[14:55] soughta right now. A super clean turbo
[14:57] variant is probably the most recession
[14:59] proof. But if the past year has any
[15:01] indication on Porsche prices, they're
[15:04] pretty much all pandemic proof. And yes,
[15:06] especially for the 991 and 992, they're
[15:09] still depreciating quite a bit, but
[15:11] those are absolutely bulletproof daily
[15:13] drivers. And a lightly used modern
[15:15] Carrera S or 4S would be a great pickup
[15:18] for a certified pre-own. And if you're
[15:20] looking to enjoy long-term ownership,
[15:22] you're looking to pick up a sports car
[15:23] for a decade or so, I really can't
[15:26] suggest a better car than a Porsche 911.
[15:29] From 1964 to 2021, they are what every
[15:33] other manufacturer judges themselves on.
[15:36] And I think we all know that comparable
[15:37] cars have major issues that have a
[15:39] serious effect on the long-term
[15:41] longevity of the car. But not the 911.
[15:44] These bad boys are easier to own than a
[15:47] fidget spinner, especially if you're
[15:48] fidgety. No, seriously. They're
[15:50] lowmaintenance. They look incredible.
[15:51] And every generation, for some reason,
[15:54] the values just over time keep climbing.
[15:56] Believe it or not, a few years ago,
[15:58] European banks were legitimately
[15:59] recommending their customers invest in a
[16:02] classic Porsche 911 to protect their
[16:04] liquid cash. And hey, I'm no financial
[16:06] analyst. I'm a car guy just like you.
[16:09] But if the banks are telling people to
[16:10] invest in a super fun, super stylish
[16:13] German sports car, I'd probably at least
[16:15] give it some consideration. Wouldn't
[16:17] you? So, there you go. Everything that
