This video by Nick, a content creation coach, identifies common mistakes that hinder YouTube channel growth. Through analyzing other creators' channels, he highlights issues like lack of niche focus, addressing a broad audience, poor video endings, inconsistent thumbnails, bad audio, irrelevant content, and over-narrowing within a niche. He provides actionable advice to correct these errors and improve channel performance.
GareTheBear's channel lacks a clear niche, mixing content for creative people with unrelated topics like closet organization and disc golf. This alienates specific audiences and reduces the value proposition for each video.
Addressing a broad audience instead of speaking directly to one person. YouTube is often an alone experience, so using singular language creates a deeper connection with each viewer.
Ending videos with filler or thanking patrons instead of setting up the next video. This misses the opportunity to guide viewers to more content, reducing session time and views.
A 249k subscriber channel reads patron names at the end, which is interruptive and causes viewers to click away before seeing end screens. Removing such interruptions helps retain viewers for the next video.
Playing the Mom Game's thumbnail for an Amazon lounge haul is inconsistent with her other thumbnails, which likely reduced its click-through rate. Repeating successful thumbnail structures is advised.
Poor audio quality is a common issue. The trick is to get the microphone as close to you as possible. Audio is half the video experience, so prioritize it.
Keeping videos on your channel that are unrelated to your niche can confuse YouTube's algorithm and viewers. Remove or unlist irrelevant content to keep your channel focused.
CampBrood's videos about specific trails or parks limit reach. While having a niche is good, being too granular can reduce potential audience. Balance specificity with broader appeal.
To grow your YouTube channel, avoid these common mistakes: define a clear niche, speak directly to individual viewers, end videos with a call to action, maintain consistent thumbnails, ensure good audio, remove irrelevant content, and avoid over-narrowing your topics. Implementing these changes can significantly improve your channel's performance.

13:24[00:00] they're costing you deeper connections with your audience with being a content creator on YouTube. of the mistakes, it could make a significant impact
[00:15] And for this, I'm gonna throw somebody under the bus, that I'm working on a video about ways for me to reference something on your channel to highlight
[00:31] or to point out as something that you can improve. And if this is your first time here, my name is Nick, that make content creation a little bit easier,
[00:45] The first mistake is a combination or just choosing to not niche down. Now, when it comes to GareTheBear,
[00:59] is that they make videos for creative people. With that alone, it becomes challenging Now, if we scroll down and we look at the videos
[01:12] We can see that Gare is definitely a creative person But we're gonna see how the value proposition Right here, "My closet is a disaster."
[01:28] when this video shows up on your homepage on YouTube, that is a stranger on YouTube they're alienating that particular audience.
[01:42] This one on the other hand, makes a lot more sense, where it says, "My new camera overhead setup," this one is for that audience of creative people.
[01:58] whereas we have another one here, Why would creative people care about that particular video? it's important to think about you are making videos
[02:14] that's interested in certain things. with yours 'cause that makes everything you know better However, when you make everything scattered like this,
[02:27] because if you look, on Mr. Beast's candy bar, why would that person care
[02:39] They wouldn't. Why would the person that enjoyed this disc golf video Most of them wouldn't.
[02:51] that cares about this overhead camera setup, why would they care about what they did this year? to just get really clear on who it is that you're serving
[03:03] for those people so that you can package those video ideas that will help the people that you're trying And then you repeat that process over and over again
[03:19] that you are building content for. The next mistake is talking to a big group of people instead So let me show you what I mean.
[03:32] Now, when we start this video, to how he addresses his audience. - So everything was about a bunch of people,
[03:45] or watch with their friends, but most people, they're watching it on their TVs, and YouTube is more of an alone experience.
[03:58] the same thing applies because for every viewer you also wanna be talking directly to them as well.
[04:10] (audience laughing) For this, all he has gotta do and start making it singular language The next tip is to not end your videos in the wrong way
[04:25] to access more of your content easily. is In The Kitchen with Momma Mel. She has 138,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.
[04:38] is because I know that you might be a new content creator, that you can still have your channel going, But even when you're established, there are things
[04:53] and make it a little bit tighter so you can do even better. - [Mel] And I just think it's a kick. I don't ever take for granted the time you spend with me.
[05:07] "I appreciate you being here Super kind, and she comes across very friendly. like she sounds amazing.
[05:21] she's letting people know that the video is complete to click on another video while she's saying those finalizing things,
[05:35] and those finalizing things help her viewers All she has to do here is start setting up the next video, that she's got a playlist that they'll love,
[05:49] and move them onto that with all this extra filler are gonna start clicking on her end screens more, And another established channel is doing another thing
[06:06] especially once you start getting traction What I'm getting ready to show you is a very common way which ends up costing them a lot of views.
[06:20] she's got 249,000 subscribers. on her YouTube channel, and she could do better
[06:32] At the end of her video, she does this. Thanks to all of our patrons, top tiers, Colin Holmes, Littlekittlecat, Mitchel Shafer-Meyer.
[06:48] and her timestamp on this video is 52 minutes, of interruptive stuff Now, the thing she's messing up here
[07:01] in between people clicking on the next video. but for everybody else, for 200,000 people that interacted
[07:13] And because of that, I guarantee you because out of those 200,000 people that watched this video, This video could have been credited
[07:28] which then ends up causing this video and session time. is you want to remove anything
[07:40] from seeing those end screens on your video. And you want to build up that next click by telling people and why it should matter
[07:52] that they're currently watching. and trying to understand why it worked, that you think might have made it work in the first place.
[08:06] is Playing the Mom Game. and her presentation is great, you know, all of that stuff. But when it comes to a big glaring mistake
[08:19] she has a video here that has 90,000 views on it It's about an Amazon lounge haul. is you can see the exact layout
[08:33] that says "Amazon Lounge Haul," Now, she sort of did it up here but then she structured it differently,
[08:48] but also a little bit of a different structure. is when she's doing those other thumbnails because this grabbed people's attention.
[09:02] And whatever she did here with the packaging was attractive So the very first thing is that. Now, when it comes to the theme here,
[09:16] "and Review from Amazon." So in this particular one, she modified that here, you know, Once we come up here, she did the same exact thing.
[09:30] is say, okay, huge, what are these, sweatsuits? is she should have said, huge sweatsuit sets, is because that's what worked previously.
[09:47] Now let me go into this a lot deeper. what she's doing, what she's saying Here we go. - I bought a whole bunch
[10:00] I'm going to try 'em on for you today so you can get rid of all of your other loungey clothes. I don't even know if there's any good ones.
[10:13] - Okay, so again, super fun presentation, if you look at how she has set up that video if you look at the other videos,
[10:28] - Amazon has been busy delivering sweatsuits and we're gonna try 'em on today and see if there's. and then she goes back into that particular part,
[10:42] but she started it a little bit differently here to repeat success when you get it. what she should have done is she should have said, okay,
[10:55] How did I start this video? How long did it take me to get into the content itself? How did I structure my title?
[11:10] that have already been proven to work Next on the list is fix your audio. that I could use information in their channel,
[11:23] and there's a lot of people that have really bad audio. here's what you wanna do. Play your video and then immediately play a video
[11:35] in what everything sounds like, The trick to having good audio is to get your microphone For me, right now, this microphone,
[11:48] if I put a hang loose sign and I put it on my forehead, get it as close to you as you can. they're like 15 bucks, and that will clip right
[12:02] to you that way, but audio is half the video experience. then prioritize that because it's really, really important. Next is keeping irrelevant content on your channel.
[12:19] of your YouTube channel. that are currently watching the channel based on the topics then you wanna leave it on the channel.
[12:31] However, if it's something that is completely different, I went to The Car Advisor Classics YouTube channel, YouTube's For You section,
[12:43] unless you turn it off, it's recommending me content Now, if I was somebody that clicked on one of his videos it's possible that YouTube might change exactly what it is
[12:57] But the fact that I clicked on the channel name if I was somebody that was interested in cars, on social media, then in that particular case,
[13:10] with videos that are not related into that number one spot about making sure so that you can make sure
[13:24] or at least most of it, is a perfect fit for those people. that's too narrow within your niche. And the whole idea of having a niche
[13:37] for people that care about that type of content. of going too narrow within your niche. Now, when it comes to CampBrood,
[13:53] So pretty cool value proposition there. is when they talk about general audience stuff they perform better.
[14:08] "to Get Kicked out of a Campground in 2024," right? if you're staying in a campground or considering it, Here, "8 Reasons Everyone is Selling their RV, Should You?"
[14:23] anybody that's considering getting an RV And technically, even people that don't like people oh yeah, see, I knew they were gonna be selling these RVs.
[14:38] that they're making here, you can see here these are isolated down to a very specific location. they are limiting the potential reach in this.
[14:51] it's a little bit different, But when they are getting really granular here about, you know, a specific trail in this particular park
[15:05] but it is getting very narrow within the niche. what it is they're offering on the channel, it's fine to do. that you're mindful of, I have my niche that I operate in
[15:21] is this going to resonate with a very small percentage that anybody that's interested When you start talking about or showing
[15:36] then you're giving yourself the opportunity And then that will help your videos also start going better, and you're thinking to yourself, yeah,
[15:50] of these things, there's also some skills that you need that will help you massively on this journey. You can go ahead and click into that right here, right now.
[16:04] and I'll see you over the next video, thanks for watching.
