[00:00] There's a life-beater Subaru, Auralist Monster, the iconic despair from Return By Death, a crazy cliffhanger. I think we can say that this is one of the best episodes of ReZero yet. There is a lot of people that outright do not like this episode.

[00:14] They actually think that this is the worst thing that ReZero has ever done, and that this has damaged and will destroy the series. Now obviously these voices are coming from individuals that legitimate by- Okay, we gotta play.

[00:32] I just lost my train of farts here now. We gotta play.

[00:45] Oh, okay. Anyway. I lost my train of farts there. There is a lot of people that legitimately do not like this. episode, because of what it means for the story, but at the same time, I understand why there's

[01:02] people that hate this, but it leads to such great development, and a very nice introspective, and retrospective, of the entirety of ReZero thus far, and I want to tell you, as a red novel,

[01:16] light novel reader of ReZero, everything that's going on here, it has immense payoff, it's worth it, it's good, Tafei Sensei, the writer of ReZero, legitimately is incredible in what he does, everything about this makes a lot of sense, but we do need to necessarily tackle

[01:32] the actual issues of why people would legitimately not like this episode, and that is the entire plot point of Amnesia. For instance, Subaru has obviously lost his memories, he doesn't know what's been going

[01:45] on since he's been in the world of ReZero, the last thing he legitimately remembers was going to the convenience store, and then obviously that was it, and then he gets transported. Now, basically, what this episode tells us is that this is a Subaru, fundamentally, that

[02:00] has literally no character development, nothing that he's received since episode one of Re-Zero season one. Like, for instance, there is nothing. Like, everything with his journey to this very point is basically gone and erased.

[02:15] Now, at first glance, this seems like a really bad thing, because obviously when it character loses everything, you might feel like the journey was not worth it, that things didn't make sense, or wasn't worth it in the end, it could cause a lot of issues, so people feel like,

[02:30] okay, what was the point of this season, or this season, or this content, if Subaru no longer remembers it, but here's the reason why it's so fundamentally important here, is because the situation and the environment that Subaru is in, is so much different than what he was in,

[02:44] in the first season, first off, we gotta remember, everything that happened to Subaru in season one, and Season 2 was pretty much orchestrated by Rosewall. Rosewall was telling basically everyone behind the scenes,

[02:56] like Elsa, for instance, to initiate certain things, and all the certain deaths and routes that basically ended in a dead end for Subaru was because of Rosewall. Rosewall orchestrated pretty much every little issue

[03:08] throughout Season 1 and Season 2. And so this is a situation where Subaru is in that is not orchestrated by Rosewall. Rosewall isn't pulling the strings, he isn't causing Subaru to reach a dead end and all that, this is something else entirely.

[03:22] The very stage is fundamentally different than what we got in Season 1 and Season 2, that was trying to push Subaru to become very similar to Rosewall. So when you remove that element, that obstacle that was in Subaru's way,

[03:36] what will happen in a world where Subaru is unaware of the world, the coolies of the world, the people around him, Will he suffer the same fate? Will he die as many times as he did in Season 1 and Season 2?

[03:48] Will he die less? Will he die more? Who really knows? The point of the matter is, is that everything about the structure of this episode basically puts us back to the very beginning. Zero. We're starting from zero, so to speak.

[04:01] And I think that this is really nice for one big reason. It showcases how individuals react to Subaru when he no longer knows who he is. Like, he doesn't know what he's accomplished in this world. we get to see everybody's mixed reactions and little character moments that really indicate how they're truly feeling.

[04:18] Like, one big detail here from this episode that isn't as obvious is definitely the stuff with Amelia. Amelia is constantly, throughout the entirety of the story, for a while, is called Amelia Tong, or Amelia. But, Superwoman, he's very distant, and he calls her Amelia Chong.

[04:33] And, this right here is very different. It showcases that he is not as close to Amelia as he was in all the seasons. Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and even Season 4, there is some distance between them.

[04:45] And this is crazy, because you've got to remember, the reason why Subaru was so close to Amelia was because she was the first person that interacted with him and gave him goodwill and saved him from a very awful situation and now delay.

[04:57] That entire spark of events that led to Subaru wanting to save Amelia and then basically falling in love with her was because of her saving him. She doesn't remember this because that loop is gone and dead, but Subaru's remembered it thanks to return by death, but now that is gone, so basically his initial interaction with Amelia and everything after is gone, so he doesn't have that initial bond with her, and knowing who she is as a person, her personality and everything, that is not there anymore, and so everything about the episode with his little interaction with Amelia showcases that, would he even fall in love with Amelia if, you know, for instance, if something bad happens, for instance, like hypothetically, he didn't die in this episode,

[05:38] twice, would he still have that same bond with Amelia Would he chase after her and want to be with her Or would he go after someone else would he go after shala for instance because of how clean she is within this episode there a lot

[05:51] of things here that make you really think and that's what makes this whole plot line so fascinating because everything has just been fundamentally changed and we get to actually see the actual perspective of what subaru goes through and that is a very rare thing let me explain now what makes

[06:08] that's very interesting is that all the characters actually get to experience Subaru's pain. And what I mean by that is, is that throughout the entire story, especially at the end of season, you know, Warren, everybody forgot who Rem is. And basically only, only Subaru knew. But now the cast of

[06:24] characters are experiencing the exact same thing that Subaru had to go through. For instance, he doesn't know who he is, he doesn't know anything, but basically now they get to see a person that isn't who they once were, might not be who they once were, and they have to try to

[06:38] fill in the gaps, like, oh, this is who you are, this is what you did, this is your personality, and basically, you start to feel like, maybe, you know, am I really that person? Was I, am I really that person that you're talking about so gallantly and positively? Am I really that kind of a cool

[06:52] guy, this hero, so to speak? So, there's a lot here that really is fascinating, because the cast of characters are actually getting to experience what Subaru has felt all the time, uh, time again throughout the story, with Julius or Rim and stuff, now they get to see it firsthand.

[07:08] Now, there's a big detail here that's very fascinating, is that Subaru, because of his loss of memories, he doesn't even know what he's capable of anymore. He doesn't know what abilities he has or anything, because as a reminder, when ReZero started, Subaru thought he was owed a lot. He was owed, for instance, like an overpowered ability or whatever, and

[07:23] to be fair, he has returned by death, which is a curse and a blessing, but the point is that he thinks that he might have a status window, a level up screen, because he's obviously write a lot of trashy Isekai novels and stuff, so, and he believes he might have something

[07:37] like that since he's in a parallel world. Now, the point here is, is that he is completely unaware of what he's accomplished, like, he doesn't know that he has the complete ability to use a whip, he doesn't really remember, like, how to use magic properly, or Beatrice and all that, with, like, EMT and stuff, he

[07:52] doesn't know that he has invisible providence, or witch factors in general, he's forgotten all of this knowledge. So this is a character that we know has a lot. He has a lot of experience, his body and experiences, you know, are there,

[08:06] but he just doesn't remember it. And it's so cool and fascinating, because you get to see just how far Seabroo has legitimately come as a character since the very beginning. Like, I would like to point this out.

[08:18] Literally when all this is going down, and Seabroo's, like, remembering everything, and he's freaking out like they even know anything about him, he realizes that they start basically shit-talking him behind the scenes. They start talking behind his back, saying that they should leave him behind or everything,

[08:32] and he's like, what the hell is going on here? And basically, it shows that this group, the entire group, literally cannot operate without Subaru. Without Subaru there as, like, the actual person to hold them together,

[08:48] they completely fall apart and don't really know what to do, and just trouble arrives. Because, I mean, look at this. Like, Subaru, he has been leading the charge basically since they got into the desert, leading and doing decisions, passing trials, you know, keeping everybody in a positive mood.

[09:02] Like with Julius, for instance, or Anastasia, to, you know, basically what happened with Ram and all that. You know, everything that we have seen thus far, he is a character that has really pushed the entire group to remain positive,

[09:14] and to allow them to even make it here to begin with. But with him no longer being who he actually was, not the Subaru that we're aware of, you can see that just everything comes apart. He really was a character that drove people to be the best they possibly could be.

[09:29] And now that he is not able to step up to the point, everything comes crumbling down to the very foundation. It's, like I said, it showcases the actual weight that Subaru has had as a character for a very long time.

[09:41] He's basically, like I said, starting from zero. And it's not that, like, everybody hates him. It's not like Amelia Beatrice hates him. but can they really rely on Subaru that isn't really the Subaru they know? For instance, he doesn't have the knowledge and the extensive understanding of the world

[09:56] and the magic system, contracts, promises, you know, RIM as well. Like, can they even trust him anymore to lead the charge? So all this is coming into question. So this entire conversation behind his back, honestly, is legitimately important

[10:09] because there's going to be a lot of people that straight up say that this is a very bad thing to do to Subaru and in a way they could have handled it a little bit better. But it's a very delicate situation

[10:21] because how are you supposed to confront someone and say, look, you are our leader figure basically, but now that you're not able to step up to the point, we can't really trust you to lead us anymore. So we got to figure out what we can do with you.

[10:33] I mean, should you even be with us? Should you even be a part of the group anymore? Because, you know, you're not who you used to be. And so this obviously would do a lot of damage to Super Psyche having to overcome these types of issues, just relearning who he actually was within this world.

[10:48] And what really knelt this in and basically makes this situation worse is that right after he starts to realize that people are scheming behind his back or potentially scheming behind his back, he straight up dies. And I think that this is a very important moment to showcase as he's falling,

[11:03] the thoughts he's thinking in his head is that everybody is against him. Everybody is scheming behind his back. He doesn't know who to trust. and literally in the span of probably like an hour or so, maybe a few hours, he died twice,

[11:16] which is very horrific, because this isn't a Subaru that has more or less been able to kind of come to terms with a return by death like C for instance just the absolute despair of death itself Obviously Subaru is still very much affected by it but he grown a little bit more used to it with time which gradually would just

[11:36] happen, he would grow accustomed to it, and used to just the absolute mental toll that Return by Death would do to you, which is a big reason why, like, he was scared to do Echidna's entire, you know, deal, because if he followed what Echidna wanted in season two, he would become an absolute

[11:50] monster, and be completely detached from humanity, but the thing is, is that eventually he will, because the thing is, is if you die so many times, eventually you will become detached to life itself. It's just, that's a core human reality.

[12:04] Like, if something happens over and over, just eventually it will lose that same emotion. It will become very numb to you. And so the super we know is not fully numb, obviously, not even close to it,

[12:16] but he has definitely gotten a little bit more used to it and more able to, like, reposition himself and understand the weight of the situation to where he doesn't die again. This Subaru is not really doing that. He's not as cautious, he's not looking out for any bad things that potentially could come, trying to save his life.

[12:32] All that development, all these little things are just fundamentally not there anymore. And so, we see this character that now experiences his second loop, and he's thinking about people behind his back that is scheming and warning him maybe even dead.

[12:46] Because, you know, he died twice, he knows he's died, the pain is real, and he comes back. and so everything about the situation is horrifying to him, so the only answer fundamentally that he comes to a conclusion to,

[12:58] is that he just straight up wants to leave, like he goes to the door at the end of the episode, he leaves the tower, and we see something going on with Shala, which I'll talk about in a second, but basically, Subaru running away makes perfect sense in this circumstance,

[13:13] because every individual in this tower cannot be trusted from him. Like, obviously, we know as the audience that you can trust Amelia, you can trust Julius, you can trust, you know, Beatrice and stuff like that,

[13:25] Patra and Ram, but there is fundamental what-ifs, question marks. I mean, is it Anastasia or Fox Echidna, for instance? We know that there is something going on there and all that,

[13:37] and how he was apparently afraid of Subaru a few episodes back, So there is a potential possibility, maybe she's the one that pushed Subaru. Is it Ram? We see a confrontation with Ram in the episode,

[13:50] and we know that the sisters have killed Subaru in the past, and we know there is a deep connection and bond there between Ram and Subaru, but did Ram push Subaru out of her frustration and anger that Subaru doesn't remember Ram anymore?

[14:02] Because one of the big things that this episode showcases is that Subaru is a big part of why Ram is able to basically function as a person, and I don't think a lot of people really realized that until this episode, that he fundamentally was allowing Ram to have hope.

[14:20] For instance, all her hope was placed in the Subaru being able to fix her sister, but now that he is not the same person, all that hope and belief that she had in Subaru is pretty much non-existent,

[14:33] and here's the big question that appears in your mind. We know that Rosemarie knows that Subaru can reset. We know this. Obviously, this is a spoiler, but you can theoretically wonder to yourself,

[14:45] is Ram aware of that? Is Ram aware of potentially Subaru being capable of resetting? Did she push Subaru, hoping that he might reset and get his memories back to some degree?

[14:57] Like I said, there is a lot of question marks. We have Julius as well. We even see Julius in this episode deeply hurt by Subaru. He is very hurt that Subaru legitimately doesn't remember everything. We know how important Subaru is to

[15:11] Julius. Julius really relies on Subaru. Julius really looks at Subaru like a friend, and now that Subaru doesn't even remember him, you know, are they even friends anymore? Does he really, is the Subaru in front of him the same Subaru that he respects? You know, there's a lot here, and it

[15:26] fundamentally changes their very dynamic and relationship, because everything that they've been building up his characters, it's just now basically gone, so, you know, did Julius, out of his frustration of Subaru no longer being the Subaru that he cares about, did he, did he push

[15:42] Subaru, now, obviously, this seems unlikely, but who knows, he's in a very dark place right now, we know he's lost everything, he's now lost Subaru, he's lost, you know, his actual master, he had a phase, he's just gone right now, he was unaware of it, you know, now, Subaru just doesn't remember

[15:56] their conversation, you know, the whole thing with, um, the fight between Suru and, uh, Julius, and how basically, uh, like, Julius is the only one that remembers the humiliation now, everything about this, you know, did Julius do it? I mean, obviously, Anastasia could be a part of it

[16:12] as well, Julius could, you know, we also have the other elephant in the room, which is Maylee, I mean, Maylee's a part of this group, and we know that she's a little gremlin child, she was a part of Elsa's, you know, villain group, and basically, we know she is capable of killing people, but the

[16:27] thing is, did she do what, you know, what happened to Subaru? I mean, obviously, she's the, the obvious choice, but I feel like there's another answer that could be given as well, the other obvious one, which is Shala. Shala is a wild card in this entire arc. I mean, we even see at the end of the episode,

[16:43] she starts to transform into something, so what's to say that Shala isn't the one pushing Subaru, because something's awesome about Subaru, because, like, his memories. Like, did she cause his memories to disappear? Who really knows? Just everything about the situation is a lot of red flags.

[16:57] The only two people we know fundamentally that would not have pushed Subaru would have been Amelia and Beatrice. Everything we know about the characters to develop an establishment as individuals would not allow them to commit that act against Subaru But it doesn change the fact that to Subaru perspective he thinks that all of them are potential murderers and someone that is planning his downfall That the reason why when he was falling down the stairs and how brutal it was his thoughts were literally thinking about the entire conversation where they were scheming behind his back

[17:26] He cannot trust any single one of them. So, just everything about the situation is legitimately insane. Like, this is an incredible setup. It's like a murder mystery story.

[17:38] Who killed Subaru? Who is killing Subaru? And we know for a fact he can't really leave the tower, because Shara even said literally the other episode, you try to leave the tower, I will basically hunt you guys. So, that's what's going on here.

[17:52] So, Super is not going to be able to get far, let's just be completely blunt. So, he's going to be forced to reset in some shape or form, but it doesn't change the fact. This means that he, once again, will not be able to trust anyone, and he needs to actually figure out who is trying to kill him.

[18:05] So, it leads to a lot of suspicion, flavoring out individuals and all that, and probably keeping it on the down low of who he actually is. Because you've got to remember, his checkpoint right now with him resetting is with him waking up with no memories.

[18:19] But obviously, at that point in time with his checkpoint, nobody knows that he has no memories. So if he uses that as a scheme, he can try to plan it off that he actually remembers everything

[18:31] despite obviously not being the Nazi Subaru that they all know. And this can lead to a lot of inconsistencies. It can lead to a lot of the individuals within, you know, the group, like Frances Ram, to notice that Subaru isn't the Subaru that she thinks he is.

[18:44] And this can lead to a lot of issues and skepticism. Maybe Subaru's an imposter. Maybe the other characters are an imposter. It's just really awesome. Like, I love everything about this. This is one of my favorite moments of the entirety of this arc, because it really does lead into some of the best content of the story,

[19:01] and fundamentally just what Subaru would do with a completely different set of circumstances instead of episode one of season one. Now, before I wrap up this video,

[19:13] there is a few things I do want to talk about, and that is to cut content. There is actually some cut content within this episode, which is technically cut in the light novel, and I know you're probably asking yourself, okay, if it's cut from the light novel,

[19:25] how is it called to consider cut content? Well, this isn't a spoiler, because obviously, it's, it literally, it won't be shown. It's not going to be shown because it is cut content. But, there is a web novel, and then there is a light novel, and then there's the anime.

[19:39] And basically, the web novel is more or less this first draft of ReZero that Tafei Sensei writes. And then, when it's compressed into a novel form, it gets the light novel version, which is condensed, and a lot of the fluff and filler is basically removed.

[19:52] And there's a lot of fundamental changes between, let's say, the web novel and the light novel of ReZero. And there is a moment that happens in the web novel on Subaru's first loop when he has no memories, where he straight up confesses to the entire cast of characters there that he is from Japan. He is from Earth.

[20:10] Now, this is crazy, because obviously this fundamentally seems like a very fascinating moment, getting to see the characters react to Subaru actually being from over the Great Waterfall, basically someone that is not from their world, and a lot of things, a lot of inconsistencies and stuff that Subaru's shown over these seasons, you know, are finally revealed, and it's revealed that the reason why, basically, Subaru is able to speak on this is because he felt like he wasn't probably able to.

[20:39] I mean, with everything with Return by Death and Sosawa, he assumed as a character that he would not be able to speak about this type of stuff, because he thought it would be associated with the contract of Return by Death to some degree. So he just never even spoke up about Japan. But obviously, not knowing any limitations of Sosawa and Return by Death, he just openly spoke about Japan to everyone in the room.

[21:01] And so this is content that was actually cut and not placed into the light novel, and then in turn, obviously, it's not going to get animated into the anime. So it's really sad fundamentally we don't get that type of moment within this episode,

[21:17] because it would have been in this episode, like straight up. And it's not White Fox, it's not the animators' fault for this. I don't fundamentally know if it's Tafe's fault or not, but obviously when it transitioned into a light novel, that was removed.

[21:30] And it's sad, because I thought that was a big piece in part that, you know, would have been very important to kind of see a little bit of Subaru figuring out that he could actually talk about the stuff with everyone around him. But also, another big detail here is that theoretically he would have been lost anyways, because we know he died shortly after that.

[21:47] So, that conversation would not have happened. But it would have been nice to see from an audience perspective of him just talking to everyone about Japan and seeing how they feel about it. So, yeah, that is gone. There is technically cut content, but, yeah.

[22:01] So, I think I will wrap it up there. Overall, incredible. Probably one of the best episodes of the entire series. Like, I would say top three potential, because it gets that peak level of what ReZero is actually about,

[22:16] and what makes it so amazing. Like, it has the desperation, the despair, the darkness, the character acting, the voice acting, the music, everything about this episode is fundamentally what makes 3-0 just such a good series.

[22:33] And I feel like this episode beautifully nails it, and it's only going to get better from here on out. I'm just going to tell you, the upcoming episodes will be even better than this episode. Like, it's just gonna get better. And so, get ready for an absolute thrill,

[22:47] because this is truly the beginning of Season 4, Arc 6. Like, this is where it truly begins. So, I love you guys. Thank you so much for watching. If you enjoy my content, please subscribe. It helps me out a lot.
