3 Wave Management Methods Explained
45sQuickly introduces the three core wave management techniques that many low-elo players overlook.
▶ Play ClipThis guide explains three methods of minion wave manipulation in League of Legends: fast pushing, freezing, and slow pushing. It details when to use each strategy and their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Wave manipulation is one of the most important and overlooked mechanics in lower elo.
The three methods are fast push, freeze, and slow push.
Fast push means killing all minions quickly to push into the enemy tower.
Use fast push when you want the wave at the opponent's tower (e.g., deny farm, get tower plates) or when in danger (low health, enemy jungler nearby).
Fast push gives a small window for roaming, lets opponent farm safely under tower, and can lead to losing lane control.
Freeze is achieved by last-hitting when your wave has fewer minions (2-3 more enemy minions) to keep the wave stationary.
Freezing keeps you safe, allows farming, and denies opponent farm and experience.
Freezing commits you to lane, giving opponent priority on objectives and roaming opportunities.
Slow push involves last-hitting and pushing slowly to build up 2-3 waves to crash into the tower.
Slow push gives time to roam, back, get tower plates, and is safe due to large minion wave.
If weaker, opponent may set up a freeze; solution is to push hard or roam.
Mastering wave management—fast push, freeze, and slow push—is crucial for lane control. Use the cheat sheet to decide which method to apply in different situations.

What are the three methods of minion wave manipulation?
Fast push, freeze, and slow push.
0:08
When should you use a fast push?
When you want the wave at the opponent's tower (deny farm, tower plates) or when in danger (low health, enemy jungler nearby).
0:24
What is the main downside of fast pushing?
It gives a small window for roaming, lets opponent farm safely under tower, and can lead to losing lane control.
0:47
How do you set up a freeze?
Last-hit minions when your wave has 2-3 fewer minions than the enemy wave to keep the wave stationary.
1:15
What are the advantages of freezing?
Keeps you safe, allows farming, and denies opponent farm and experience.
1:29
What is the downside of freezing?
It commits you to lane, giving opponent priority on objectives and roaming opportunities.
1:48
How do you execute a slow push?
Last-hit and push slowly to build up 2-3 waves and crash into enemy tower.
2:06
What are the advantages of slow pushing?
Gives time to roam, back, get tower plates, and is safe due to large minion wave.
2:32
What is the downside of slow pushing?
If weaker, opponent may set up a freeze; solution is to push hard or roam.

Wave management importance
Establishes the core concept that wave manipulation is a key mechanic often overlooked in lower elo.
Fast push definition
Clearly defines the first method and its straightforward execution.
0:17Freeze setup
Provides a specific condition (2-3 more enemy minions) for setting up a freeze.
1:15Slow push as default
Recommends slow push as the default pushing method due to its versatility and safety.
2:06[00:00] when playing league of legends knowing
[00:01] how to correctly manipulate minion waves
[00:03] is one of the most important mechanics
[00:05] in the game and one of the most
[00:06] overlooked mechanics in lower elo there
[00:08] are three different methods of
[00:09] manipulating a minion wave you can fast
[00:11] push a wave freeze a wave or slow
[00:13] pressure wave and we'll go over what you
[00:14] should use and when firstly fast pushing
[00:17] this is very straightforward just kill
[00:18] all the minions as quickly as possible
[00:20] to push your minions into their tower
[00:21] this is possibly the weakest way to
[00:23] default push and should only really be
[00:24] used in two circumstances the first
[00:26] being that you want your wave at your
[00:27] opponent's tower this could be for any
[00:29] reason such as your opponent has roamed
[00:31] and you're looking to deny farm or
[00:32] simply you can push in for tower plates
[00:34] the second reason to fast push is if
[00:35] you're in danger for example if you've
[00:37] got low health and your risk of being
[00:38] killed or if you know the enemy jungler
[00:40] is looking your way fast pushing is a
[00:41] quick way to get yourself out of that
[00:43] lane and buy yourself a small amount of
[00:45] time to fall back or have backup arrive
[00:47] so what is the downside to fast pushing
[00:49] well usually when doing this you are
[00:50] just forcing a single wave into the
[00:51] tower with minions spawning every 30
[00:53] seconds and taking 5-10 seconds to push
[00:55] a wave in you're not giving yourself a
[00:56] good window to roam or be impactful in
[00:58] any way in addition if you're fast
[01:00] pushing you're letting your opponent get
[01:01] pretty free farm under their tower where
[01:03] they are very safe and if you want to
[01:04] challenge them for this farm you're
[01:05] putting yourself at high risk for no
[01:07] reason also what quite often happens is
[01:09] you've now given priority to your
[01:10] opponent set up a freeze or slow push
[01:12] back at you which can cause you to
[01:13] quickly lose control over your lane the
[01:15] second method is freezing a wave this is
[01:17] pretty easy to set up you just last hit
[01:19] minions when your wave has fewer minions
[01:20] than your opponents as long as the
[01:22] opposing minion wave has two or three
[01:23] more minions in it than yours you should
[01:25] be able to set up a freeze making sure
[01:26] this minion line does not move from
[01:28] where it is there are many advantages to
[01:30] freezing a lane firstly you're keeping
[01:32] yourself incredibly safe and easily able
[01:34] to farm while keeping the opposing laner
[01:36] overextended also freezing is a great
[01:37] option if you're ahead or behind if
[01:39] you're behind it can keep you safe from
[01:40] ganks and all ends and allows you to
[01:42] farm and if you're ahead it's a
[01:43] crippling way to deny your opponent farm
[01:45] and sometimes even experience depending
[01:47] on how far ahead you are the downside to
[01:49] freezing however is that you have now
[01:50] committed to being in that lane for a
[01:52] very long time this means that if the
[01:53] enemy team go for a dragon or herald
[01:55] your opponent will usually have priority
[01:56] over you in addition it means they'll be
[01:58] able to roam and gank without any
[01:59] pressure from you so a good general idea
[02:01] for freezing is that if your opponent is
[02:03] great at roaming don't freeze your
[02:04] teammates will not be happy with you the
[02:06] third and final method is the slow push
[02:07] this is incredibly strong and should be
[02:09] your default way to push and thankfully
[02:11] it's very easy to do all you do is
[02:12] simply push the minion wave slowly last
[02:14] hitting and pushing where you need to
[02:16] what happens following this is you're
[02:17] able to build up two and sometimes even
[02:19] three waves of minions to crash into
[02:20] your opponent's tower this strategy is
[02:22] actually really similar to the fast push
[02:24] except you're pushing more minions into
[02:25] the tower which overcomes the weakness
[02:27] of fast pushing and that you don't have
[02:28] time to be effective where with multiple
[02:30] minions crashed you can now be impactful
[02:32] the main advantages of this are you now
[02:33] have time to roam you can freely back
[02:35] and buy you can often get multiple tower
[02:36] plates and you're pretty safe because no
[02:38] one wants to fight you in a large wave
[02:39] of minions in addition if you do score a
[02:41] kill it is devastating because your
[02:42] opponent is going to miss so much farm
[02:44] essentially this method allows you to do
[02:46] anything you want the only real downside
[02:48] to this method is if you're weaker it
[02:49] may allow your opponent to set up a
[02:50] freeze in their favor but if that is the
[02:52] case either look to push the minions
[02:54] hard into the tower or go in rome i hope
[02:56] you found this guide helpful and here is
[02:57] a cheat sheet of what method to use and
[02:59] when
