Transform a Boring House on a Budget
46sShows homeowners how to dramatically improve curb appeal with low-cost landscaping, a highly searched topic.
▶ Play ClipThis is a concise tutorial that teaches how to transform a bland house's curb appeal through strategic landscaping. Professional designer Bobby Cam outlines key design principles—curved beds, varied plant heights, upgraded walkways, and a modern mailbox—and provides a full cost breakdown for DIY versus hiring a pro.
Most homes lack architectural character; curb appeal can be created with landscaping.
Bring beds 12 feet away from the house, use sweeping curves to add depth to both beds and lawn.
Plant trees (e.g., cherry trees) to create height; combined with varied textures and colors, this adds visual interest.
Remove old concrete walkway, install a 25 ft×3 ft paver path that follows the curve of the bed.
Replace a dated mailbox with a modern wood-and-stain version for a contemporary touch.
Add path lights and uplighting on trees and mailbox to dramatically enhance nighttime curb appeal.
DIY ≈ $3,500; hiring a professional company ≈ $8,000–$10,000.
A bland house can be transformed into an eye-catching home using four landscaping strategies: curved beds, vertical plantings, paver walkways, and a modern mailbox—all for under $3,500 if you DIY.

Why does the designer recommend lighting as the 'X factor'?
Because lighting the mailbox, trees, and walkway dramatically transforms the property's nighttime appearance.
3:44
Depth via curved beds
This principle of bringing beds away from the house is the central design tip for transforming a flat, boring front yard.
1:10Vertical interest from trees
Using trees (rather than only low shrubs) creates height variation that visually elevates a monotone landscape.
1:52Mailbox as design anchor
A small, often-overlooked element (the mailbox) can be upgraded to define the entire style of a front yard.
3:02DIY vs. hiring cost analysis
The explicit cost comparison ($3,500 DIY vs. $8,000–$10,000 pro) provides practical decision-making data for homeowners.
4:01[00:00] not everybody has an amazing house some
[00:02] of us live in a very modest house that's
[00:06] relatively boring it doesn't have a lot
[00:08] of architectural elements that make it
[00:10] jump off the page so how do you take a
[00:12] house that is is pretty bland and make
[00:15] it amazing how you do it is with
[00:17] landscaping curb appeal i'm going to
[00:19] show you exactly how we're going to take
[00:21] something super boring and make it
[00:23] awesome
[00:25] [Music]
[00:28] if you're new to the channel my name is
[00:30] bobby cam professional landscape
[00:31] designer install and i love to help
[00:33] people usually very busy people
[00:36] with their landscaping they don't they
[00:37] don't quite know what a space can look
[00:39] like or how to update something or make
[00:41] it look cool
[00:42] we're going to jump right into this
[00:43] we're going to go into the design we'll
[00:44] have a little time lapse going on i'm
[00:46] going to fire off a bunch of tips that
[00:48] break down the design and help you and
[00:50] give you out some cost effective things
[00:52] that you can do when it comes to your
[00:54] landscaping and by the end of the video
[00:55] i'm going to tell you how much it costs
[00:57] if you were to pay someone or if you
[01:00] were to do it yourself which i think a
[01:02] lot of us are diy-ers nowadays and
[01:05] that's pretty important to know what am
[01:06] i going to be paying if i want to have
[01:08] this look let's go
[01:10] so the first thing when you got a house
[01:12] that's pretty bland pretty flat there's
[01:13] not much going on is have fun with the
[01:16] beds bring those beds out away from the
[01:18] house create some depth in the design
[01:20] one thing that i think is super cool
[01:22] that i haven't done on a lot of
[01:23] designing is i really had fun with
[01:25] curves going on here where i brought it
[01:28] away from the house a good probably 12
[01:30] feet off that corner brought it around
[01:33] and then connected it and hooked it all
[01:35] the way down to the mailbox and so it
[01:37] gave this really cool shape not only to
[01:40] the beds but to the lawn so play with
[01:43] curves have fun with them and bring
[01:44] those beds off the house and create
[01:46] depth
[01:47] the second thing to create even a little
[01:49] bit more depth and interest is with
[01:52] these trees we got these two cherry
[01:53] trees so instead of everything being
[01:55] bushes and flat and down to the ground
[01:58] we created some height by putting a tree
[02:00] over in the corner and a tree over by
[02:03] the walkway that we've got going on so
[02:05] it's almost like as you pull up you kind
[02:07] of go around that first tree opens up to
[02:09] the house it creates a little bit more
[02:11] interest versus everything just being up
[02:13] against the house and flat so have fun
[02:15] with heights have fun with textures have
[02:17] fun
[02:18] with funds fun you know just have fun
[02:21] with different kinds of plans and
[02:23] different kinds of colors and textures
[02:25] and heights and that is going to create
[02:27] interest with something like this the
[02:29] third thing that i really like is we
[02:31] busted out the old concrete walkway that
[02:34] was just your typical kind of came out
[02:36] hooked over
[02:38] end of the day and we created a paver
[02:40] walkway which ups the value it's a
[02:42] cooler material
[02:44] a little bit of money is going to go
[02:46] into that but it's only about 25 feet
[02:48] total by three feet wide so it's not a
[02:51] ton of square footage and you take that
[02:53] walkway you bring it out you bring it
[02:55] out and away from the house and kind of
[02:56] go along with the curve of the bed it
[02:59] just really flows really neat
[03:02] the last thing that i think is the x
[03:04] factor and something so small in this
[03:07] design is the mailbox a lot of people
[03:10] don't ever even look at a mailbox or
[03:12] when they do a mailbox it might be brick
[03:14] and mortar or a veneer stone but in this
[03:17] way we did some wood and we would stain
[03:20] it and that gives it this modern
[03:22] contemporary vibe so we just took this
[03:24] like old nasty sorry it's not old and
[03:26] nasty it just hadn't been touched since
[03:28] like 1950
[03:29] house
[03:31] and we gave it a modern vibe by upping
[03:33] the landscaping working with curves
[03:35] putting some different colors and
[03:36] textures in updating the walkway
[03:39] updating that mailbox and man this thing
[03:41] is a cherry i think it looks awesome
[03:44] night and day better and then the final
[03:46] thing you do is you light it all up you
[03:48] put some lighting in there you light up
[03:50] the mailbox you light up the trees you
[03:52] put some intimate path lights along that
[03:54] walkway and this thing
[03:56] screams curb appeal absolutely screams
[03:59] it so how much does this all cost
[04:01] if you were to do this yourself all the
[04:04] plants the wood the trees couple
[04:06] boulders the lighting i think you're
[04:08] going to be in for about 3 500
[04:12] that's what you're going to spend you
[04:13] might have a little bit of turf repair
[04:15] you can either do seed and straw on the
[04:17] outskirts or you can do sod
[04:19] if you're going to pay a company like
[04:21] mine to install this
[04:23] you're going to be closer to
[04:25] the 8 to 10 grand range depending on the
[04:28] quality of the lights how many lights
[04:30] you put in just a couple of different
[04:32] factors so there is a savings obviously
[04:35] with paying a company or doing it
[04:37] yourself versus paying a company but
[04:39] here's what i want you to think about
[04:41] are you better off
[04:43] paying a company and doing what you do
[04:46] or going out and thinking you're saving
[04:48] three to four grand but putting in a ton
[04:51] of sweat equity going out and getting
[04:53] the plants and just really using your
[04:57] time there versus using your time doing
[04:59] what you do and making money it's
[05:01] definitely something to think about if
[05:03] this is something that you want to take
[05:04] some pride in you want to say i did the
[05:06] front landscape i'm all for it i get it
[05:08] when you get out there and you start
[05:09] digging and you mess with that shovel
[05:11] and it's 100 degrees you might think
[05:13] otherwise and you might want to hire a
[05:14] company
[05:15] so
[05:16] if you like this kind of video go watch
[05:19] this video i got some other really cool
[05:21] little gems in that one if you want to
[05:23] define a small space or make something
[05:25] pop off the page see on the video
