6:14[00:00] Napa has been on an absolute Terror
[00:02] lately as though one of the biggest
[00:03] anime studios in the world if you don't
[00:06] recognize the name then you probably
[00:07] heard of their shows like Jiu Jitsu
[00:09] kaisen Attack on Titan the final season
[00:11] and Chainsaw man just to name a few
[00:13] mapla has been successful in creating
[00:15] fantastic anime adaptations of the most
[00:18] popular manga on the planet but how did
[00:20] they start and how did they achieve such
[00:23] notoriety well the answer will most
[00:25] definitely surprise you Maple would not
[00:28] be what it is today without masal
[00:30] mariyama who's produced iconic anime
[00:32] films over the years and helped bring up
[00:34] big time directors like mamaru hasoda
[00:36] and Satoshi Khan he's an honorary member
[00:39] of the Beloved anime convention autocon
[00:41] which if you haven't been you should
[00:43] definitely check out and more
[00:45] importantly co-founded Studio madhouse
[00:47] who is responsible for popular shows
[00:49] like Trigun death note and even Hunter
[00:51] Hunter because of this the studio grew
[00:54] into something more corporate than the
[00:56] 70 year old had wanted which is one of
[00:58] the reasons why he co-founded the
[01:00] mariama animation produce project
[01:02] Association or maplin 2011. he also
[01:06] really wanted to get the ball rolling to
[01:08] make the now highly acclaimed film in
[01:10] this corner of the world which ran into
[01:12] financial difficulties at mad house you
[01:14] think this movie would have been the
[01:16] first work map it would have released
[01:18] but you'd be wrong several titles
[01:20] released beforehand like the cincero
[01:23] autonomy directed series kids on the
[01:25] slope and Terror and resonance the third
[01:28] season of the boxing classic Hajime no
[01:30] ippo and the supernatural Harem like
[01:32] comedy punchline in this corner of the
[01:35] world ran into a lot of production
[01:37] problems but it finally released in
[01:40] 2016. set during the 1930s and 40s this
[01:43] film Chronicles the life of a young
[01:45] married woman named suzu who moves away
[01:47] from Hiroshima and she tries to take
[01:50] care of her family this movie won tons
[01:52] of awards including the country's top
[01:54] prize at the Japan Academy and has been
[01:57] praised greatly on his portrayal of war
[01:59] from a respective lesser scene that of
[02:02] Regular People 2016 was a major turning
[02:05] point for MATA just as Studio was
[02:07] gaining traction mariyama reside as CEO
[02:10] in April that year in order to create
[02:11] Studio M2 so that he could focus on
[02:14] personal projects he passed a job to
[02:17] promising young producer manabotsuka
[02:19] later that year the studio released Yuri
[02:21] on Ice which quickly became a worldwide
[02:23] phenomenon for its approach on the
[02:25] portrayal of lgbtq plus and mental
[02:28] health issues the story revolves around
[02:30] Japanese figure skater named Yuri who
[02:32] decides to quit the sport but runs into
[02:34] his Idol Victor who wants to coach him
[02:36] out of retirement Marion Ice is a pretty
[02:39] good series and much to its Acclaim is
[02:41] hailed for its realistic approach to
[02:43] Yuri and Victor's complicated
[02:45] relationship 2016 wasn't all Rose tinted
[02:48] flowers as reports started to emerge on
[02:51] the working conditions at Napa during
[02:53] the production of that series and they
[02:55] were less than ideal with very tight
[02:57] deadlines and low wages this would be a
[03:00] recurring problem for the studio as they
[03:02] grew bigger the post-mariama period for
[03:05] MATA released of resume worthy list of
[03:07] anime like kakaguri in 2017 Banana Fish
[03:11] in 2018 the re-adaptation of Osama
[03:14] tessica's 1969 classic doroto in 2019
[03:17] and an absolute favorite of mine the
[03:20] post-apocalyptic Dark Fantasy Dora
[03:23] hedora in 2020. 2020 was the next
[03:25] breakout year for Matas they released a
[03:28] whoppin eight anime titles within the
[03:30] calendar year and while most were pretty
[03:32] Unforgettable there were a couple
[03:34] standouts Attack on Titan the final
[03:36] season was the most anticipated since
[03:38] mapa announced they would take over
[03:39] producing the anime from with Studio
[03:42] while some people had issues with the
[03:44] show most desertedly how they are
[03:47] dragging out bending by making at this
[03:49] point what 50 million parts now Jiu
[03:52] Jitsu Kaizen is the other anime that
[03:54] stood out and this Supernatural Shonen
[03:56] was a surprising success with its
[03:58] gorgeous animation wild fight scenes
[04:01] crazy characters and amazing EP at this
[04:05] point Napa has ascended to a new level
[04:07] of notoriety but the working conditions
[04:10] continue to get worse as animators
[04:12] directors and producers alike have all
[04:15] reported short deadlines and long
[04:17] working hours an extremely high
[04:20] expectations unfortunately this systemic
[04:23] problem has no immediate answer but the
[04:26] studio has made improvements to combat
[04:28] this like opening a new studio in Tokyo
[04:30] with the aim to improve the working
[04:32] environment for its teams 2022 was the
[04:36] year of Chainsaw man which had become
[04:37] the most highly anticipated anime of all
[04:40] time and much is because of the
[04:42] celebrated reputation of mangaka tatsuki
[04:44] Fujimoto while chainsaw man may not have
[04:46] lived up to most people's locked
[04:48] expectations the series is still a very
[04:51] darn good one and has built the Studio's
[04:53] profile even higher in 2023 Napa
[04:57] released the second season of yet
[04:58] another popular anime Finland Saga which
[05:01] has received strong reviews the first
[05:04] half of the third part of Attack on
[05:06] Titan the final season which just saying
[05:09] that is nearly as ridiculous as the
[05:11] studio actually doing it and I bet you
[05:13] can't say that fast three times first
[05:15] half of the third part of Attack on
[05:16] Titan final season the first half of the
[05:18] third part of attacker Titanfalls the
[05:19] first half of the third part of the
[05:21] attack the fight of season
[05:24] I guess I got a b or an A I guess I
[05:27] don't know thankfully map is planning to
[05:30] release the last half of the third part
[05:31] of the attack on Titan the final season
[05:33] later this year so I'm not to say that
[05:35] Ridiculousness anymore and collectively
[05:37] we can just call it the last season most
[05:41] Paradise is another great series that
[05:43] started in early April and there's more
[05:45] on the horizon for mapo like Jiu Jitsu
[05:47] Tyson the second season and movies for
[05:50] Yuri and ice and Zombieland Saga the
[05:52] possibilities are truly endless for the
[05:55] studio because who knows what giant
[05:57] anime IP they will take or next maybe
[06:00] one piece JoJo's Bizarre Adventure look
[06:03] it could happen besides Ghibli there
[06:06] isn't an Anime Studio as successful
[06:09] internationally right now as MacBook and
[06:11] they've only been around for 12 years
[06:14] it's also important for mappa to
[06:16] continue making inroads and treating
[06:18] their employees better because if they
[06:20] stop trying people will leave and the
[06:23] entire Studio could fall apart mapa was
[06:26] born out of the simplest of reasons but
[06:28] has grown into something much greater
[06:31] than I'm sure any of the founders
[06:33] including Mariam himself ever expected
[06:36] with consistently high quality stories
[06:38] and the most popular anime out there
[06:40] mapa is the Juggernaut of the anime
[06:43] industry right now and seemingly shows
[06:46] no signs of slowing down now if you got
[06:48] anything to say I'd love to hear from
[06:50] you and talk some more about it let me
[06:52] know your thoughts in the comments you
[06:53] can send me an email or you can find me
[06:55] on Twitter or Facebook oh and one more
