2:18[00:00] Today we'll look how to compress video
[00:01] files. This can be a very important step
[00:03] when uploading your video to a social
[00:05] media platform with a file size limit.
[00:07] The tool we'll use is called Handbreak.
[00:09] I'm here on the website. It's
[00:10] Handbreak.fr. I'll leave a link in the
[00:12] description below. It's a free and open
[00:14] source tool with a great reputation. And
[00:16] best of all, it's available on all major
[00:18] platforms, Windows, Mac, and Linux. I'm
[00:20] on Windows, so let's install it for
[00:22] that. Here, I'll click download
[00:23] Handbreak 1.92 installer, and I'll click
[00:26] on the file name here. I'll save it to
[00:27] my computer. Now to install it, I'll
[00:30] just double click on the executable
[00:31] here. I'll give it permission to install
[00:33] and I'll click finish. Now to run
[00:35] Handbreak, I'll just click the icon
[00:37] here. And you can see on Windows I get
[00:39] this message about installing thenet
[00:40] runtime. So I'll press a button that
[00:42] says download it now. And what I found
[00:44] is that you have to install the version
[00:45] 8 runtime of.net even if you have a
[00:48] later version. So I'm going to download
[00:49] this installer. I can see it's from
[00:50] microsoft.com. I'll press save and let's
[00:53] install the net 8. I'll press install.
[00:57] And when it's all done, I'll press
[00:58] close. Now, if I go back to Handbreak
[01:00] and run it, it actually starts. So,
[01:03] let's open up the file we want to
[01:04] convert. We can open up a batch of files
[01:06] here, but I just want to do one. I could
[01:08] drag it onto this middle area, but I'll
[01:09] just click open video files here, and
[01:11] I'll go to my temp folder. Now, I have
[01:13] this movie file here that I want to
[01:14] compress, and it's actually 1.39 GB. So,
[01:17] let's see how small we can get this.
[01:19] I'll press open.
[01:21] And now, we have the different settings
[01:22] we can use to compress it. Now, the good
[01:24] news is we can pretty much just use the
[01:26] default settings. The main preset here
[01:28] is fast 1080p 30, but you can choose
[01:30] other ones if you want, but I'm just
[01:32] going to leave it like that. You can see
[01:33] the format will be MP4. I'm going to
[01:35] click web optimized. That means the MP4
[01:37] file can be streamed immediately when
[01:39] someone views it on the web. There's
[01:41] other options here on the tabs you can
[01:42] choose to adjust if you like. Under
[01:44] video for frame rate, I just like to
[01:46] choose the top option, same as source,
[01:48] but you can make it lower if you want.
[01:50] Let's go back to the summary. Down here
[01:51] under save as, we can choose the
[01:53] destination. Let me click browse. I'll
[01:55] put it in the same folder here. I'll
[01:57] call it astronauts compressed.
[01:59] I'll press save. One cool feature is
[02:01] that you can choose what Handbreak will
[02:02] do after it's finished running. You can
[02:04] make it close itself or even log off
[02:06] your computer, but I'm just going to
[02:07] have it do nothing. And now I'm going to
[02:08] press start encode. So it's going to
[02:11] start compressing our file. You can see
[02:13] the elapse time down here. And now we
[02:16] have our compressed file output here.
[02:17] And you can see it's only 25.9
[02:19] megabytes. And when we run it, the
[02:22] quality looks great.
[02:24] This would be perfect for posting
[02:25] online. So check out this tool at
[02:27] handbreak.fr.
