Your Vtuber Model Must Reflect Your Personality
45sHighlights a common mistake new VTubers make and offers a clear, relatable solution.
▶ Play ClipThis video offers advice on creating a Vtuber model design that represents your personality, with tips on theme, detail balance, and inspiration. The creator shares personal experience from redesigning their model nine times.
Your Vtuber design represents you and will be seen daily for years, so it's crucial to get it right.
Your model should reflect your personality, not just your content. Example: a gremlin personality shouldn't have a edgy model.
Implement clothing styles, colors, aesthetics, and accessories that you like into your design.
A clear theme is crucial; viewers should be able to tell your theme at a glance. Write down elements related to your theme and implement them.
Balance big, middle, and small details to avoid a plain or overwhelming design. Too many small details can be frustrating to draw.
Use Pinterest to search for species, elements, and hairstyles. Collect 10-20 photos and create a mood board using apps like Pixar.
Design with ease of drawing in mind; avoid elements you struggle with. Consider rigging unless you're not the rigger.
Use silhouettes, big clothes, unique hairstyles, and tails to stand out. Example: Crushy Oli's asymmetrical skirt and buns.
The key to a good Vtuber design is authenticity: let your personality shine through a clear theme, balanced details, and a recognizable silhouette. Use inspiration boards and prioritize ease of drawing for long-term satisfaction.

6:02[00:00] your video design is one of the most
[00:02] important things when it comes to your
[00:03] content it represents you and it will be
[00:06] a thing you see every day for the next
[00:08] few years until you graduate so today
[00:10] I'm going to tell you how to do that se
[00:12] right and how to make a good character
[00:14] design why should you listen to me I'm
[00:16] an artist and character designer and
[00:19] I've been reading since 2 and a half
[00:20] years and I've rep it nine whole times
[00:23] and there soon will be a 10th one
[00:25] hopefully it will be the last one
[00:26] because with this one I'll make sure
[00:28] that I'm not going to repeat the
[00:29] mistakes every so far and I'll teach
[00:31] them to you so you don't have to reind
[00:33] nine times as 12 or more so first of all
[00:37] your M should represent you as an
[00:40] example if you have a Gman personality
[00:43] don't make your M Dy Mommy okay one of I
[00:45] previous mod models um looked kind of
[00:48] like this it was really edgy and I don't
[00:51] know and well I was just kind of
[00:54] miserable when I had to mod cuz it's
[00:55] just not me I'm not etchy at least not
[00:57] my personality um if also seen another
[01:00] YouTuber say your model should reflect
[01:03] your content but I don't think that's
[01:04] true it should it should represent your
[01:07] personality as an example um ji DOI if
[01:10] you look at her model you already know
[01:12] this a gremlin or at least like a person
[01:14] with a lot of energy like she does
[01:16] gaming content and like why would she
[01:20] make a model based of gaming content it
[01:22] w make sense it will make sense though
[01:25] to make her model based off of her
[01:27] personality um now secondly a thing it
[01:31] will also represent is what you like
[01:33] okay Implement clothing styles colors
[01:36] Aesthetics and accessories that you like
[01:38] into your design as example one of my
[01:40] feing friends Jam peanuts they're um
[01:43] their style is soraa and they like they
[01:46] like rainbows like everything colorful
[01:48] and you can see it on the model thirdly
[01:50] and one of the most important things to
[01:52] consider then designing is your theme
[01:55] it's really really important to have a
[01:57] clear theme you should be able to look
[01:59] at you and be able to tell what thing
[02:01] you have going on except if you're
[02:02] really come to them of or species and or
[02:05] speci species I cannot pronounce the
[02:08] word if you don't know how um I
[02:10] recommend writing down elements that are
[02:12] similar to your theme and then
[02:13] implementing them into your design an
[02:15] example if you are a demon add horns and
[02:18] a tail possibly add small Wings maybe
[02:21] could add fire um how you add fire to
[02:23] model well you could make a small fire
[02:25] pin you could add it to your texture um
[02:29] if you don't know how to do D let me
[02:30] show you an example um I made a design
[02:32] recently and one of the um elements was
[02:35] emotions look at this there was a small
[02:37] hard cut out on the chest there's small
[02:39] tears on the skirt and under the eyes
[02:42] and there's also small hearts on the
[02:43] boots if you can't get with anything
[02:46] yourself you could look up the signs
[02:47] with a similar theme and see what other
[02:49] people did um but don't copy don't copy
[02:52] that's not don't copy also if you don't
[02:55] know how to get inspiration I'll talk
[02:57] about that as well after the next advice
[02:59] which is is balance details sounds kind
[03:02] of dumb but let me explain I think
[03:04] there's three types of details big
[03:06] details middle details and small details
[03:09] kind of like food sizes unless you're
[03:10] American let me explain them with a
[03:12] design I made recently look at this
[03:14] cotton candy girl a big detail will be
[03:17] the skirts or the pigtails a middle siiz
[03:19] detail could be the Ruffles and a small
[03:22] one could be the candy all over there I
[03:24] hope you kind of get what I mean cuz I
[03:26] think it's kind of important to balance
[03:27] this uh cuz if you have too much big
[03:29] details it's going to look plain if it
[03:31] has too many details it's going to be
[03:33] overwhelming and a pain in the as draw
[03:35] and well we do not want to be up charge
[03:37] foric design so listen to me also if you
[03:40] made it this far I assume you like this
[03:42] video so please like because a lot of
[03:44] people forget to do that even though
[03:45] they like the video as I said earlier I
[03:47] was going to talk about how to get
[03:50] inspiration so now I'm going to do that
[03:52] first of all how I get pictures
[03:54] personally um I like to use Twitter
[03:57] because I often come across adoptables
[03:58] or just genuinely character design
[04:00] that's that's my time liit I don't know
[04:02] about yours um so what I really
[04:03] recommend is Pinterest if you don't have
[04:06] it freaking download it okay you missing
[04:08] out
[04:09] buddy what I do is I just search up the
[04:11] species and download some photos like as
[04:13] an example I search up vampire or c/
[04:15] weer or cat character just just stuff
[04:18] like that um and then I also look up the
[04:20] elements and hairstyles and then when
[04:22] you think you have enough photos like
[04:25] maybe 10 to 20 it can be less it can be
[04:27] more it's time to get it a mve
[04:30] board I actually only started using M
[04:33] bars until very recently I always just
[04:36] put the inso in my reference window but
[04:38] now I'm looking but now looking back I
[04:40] don't really recommend it anymore
[04:42] because a lot of times I looked at one
[04:44] photo for too long and forgot the other
[04:47] ones also I use Pixar to make the mood
[04:50] Parts you can add photos really fast
[04:52] it's free and yeah it's just really good
[04:54] so if you don't have an app to make them
[04:55] I I really recommend it uh
[05:00] I'm sorry I'm sick next is how easy it
[05:03] is to grow a character I already
[05:04] mentioned this earlier that you
[05:05] shouldn't have too much spell details
[05:07] because well you might either get
[05:09] upcharged or be frustrated every time
[05:11] you Dy yourself so yeah but it's not
[05:13] just about small details I'm about to
[05:15] say next is mainly going to apply to
[05:17] artist try to make a design easy to draw
[05:20] for you as an example I suck at drawing
[05:24] t-shirts okay so I'm not going to aim to
[05:27] give my character t-shirt or if you
[05:29] don't like drawing white hair maybe you
[05:30] should maybe you shouldn't go with white
[05:31] hair Al I'm just saying this for mental
[05:33] sanity okay if you really want white
[05:35] hair or whatever go with it okay take
[05:37] this little grain of salt pretend you're
[05:39] a white woman that thinks salt spicy
[05:41] that's how much you want to take his
[05:42] advice from me okay okay you got
[05:45] it oh yeah also think about rigging
[05:48] unless you're another rigger then that's
[05:49] not your problem but again it's not that
[05:51] big of a deal at the time recording it's
[05:53] 2024 and there's pretty much TOS
[05:57] everywhere now a last advice for this
[05:59] this video is make your design
[06:02] recognizable you can do that in many
[06:04] many ways one will be the Silhouettes
[06:06] personally my favorite things to make
[06:08] that s out is Big clothes like sleeves
[06:11] big hoods or capes I think we need more
[06:14] ERS of capes I also really love unique
[06:17] hairstyles and big Tails a few video
[06:20] mods that did this really well is first
[06:21] of all crushy Oli CR I'm not sure if I'm
[06:25] pronouncing name right probably not um
[06:27] maybe you've seen her before um she's
[06:29] from whole life and she's a Zombie Beer
[06:31] which you can already tell by looking at
[06:33] her and I I love her design and model
[06:35] overall cuz um what makes her model or
[06:38] like silouettes s out so much first of
[06:40] all is a skirt it's big and it's really
[06:45] um unsymmetrical which is also good um
[06:48] and you should consider that too and
[06:51] also the buns and the SW I love this SW
[06:53] I love that detail one we also a really
[06:56] good Sid is Juju Wenda she is a
[07:00] um I probably pronounce it wrong too
[07:03] he's a small preev um preed YouTu um
[07:07] she's a she's a I think vood doll vood
[07:11] doll beer and I just I love the design
[07:13] um I love the Buns I just I love
[07:16] everything about it it's so cool um I
[07:18] yeah the was made by gentle power who is
[07:21] um a fairly small um character designer
[07:26] here on Twitter um and their designs are
[07:28] really really good you should definitely
[07:29] check them out oh yeah something you
[07:31] could also consider is how much your
[07:33] character stands out among other
[07:34] characters with the same species or
[07:36] theme let's test this out uh my current
[07:39] model is a shark let's search that up on
[07:42] printerest and see how much I would send
[07:44] out this is also just pin um I'm sure if
[07:46] I'd be compared to other viers I would
[07:48] perhaps stand a little less but it
[07:50] doesn't really matter because again I'm
[07:52] Pro I'm probably going to reprint soon
[07:54] it's going to be the 10th time
[07:59] but yeah that's it with this video
[08:01] already um I really hope you found this
[08:03] helpful and that you're now more
[08:05] inspired to make a character sign Al a
[08:07] small reminder that I do commission so
[08:09] if you really don't want to do it
[08:10] yourself I can always be the one to do
[08:11] it for you but for now bye-bye and
[08:14] please show me this bye
[08:18] [Music]
