[[1:05]]
Jay Leno's Garage YouTube Live Event

DJ Sixsmith welcomes Jay Leno to a live event, describing his garage as 'unbelievable' and larger in person. Leno explains his collection is not themed but simply 'stuff I like.'

[[2:00]]
Elon Musk and SpaceX Experience

Leno visited SpaceX and was impressed that it was built in 2.5 years, compared to Cape Canaveral's decades. Musk shared cost reduction plans: from $1 billion per gallon water on Mars to $100,000, aiming for $1,000.

[[3:12]]
Elon Musk's Practical Genius

Leno recalls Musk in 2007 proposing charging stations on the coast for electric cars, which Leno doubted. Musk later built the infrastructure, demonstrating foresight. Leno notes Musk lives in an Airstream trailer, avoiding a billionare lifestyle.

[[5:50]]
SpaceX Rocket Ship Prototype

A clip shows the Starship rocket, 165 feet tall, 30 feet in diameter, with payload volume exceeding a 747. Leno likens it to sending the Empire State Building to space.

[[8:40]]
Tony Hawk's Electric Corvette

Tony Hawk electrified his Corvette by removing the original motor and storing it, allowing reversibility. Leno supports electrification of non-rare cars to attract younger enthusiasts less interested in traditional mechanics.

[[21:39]]
Jay Leno's Car Collection Origins

Leno started collecting cars as a child in New England fixing lawnmowers and finding abandoned cars. He bought his first California car, a Buick, from the Pennysaver. He also has Johnny Carson's 1939 Chrysler, left to him in Carson's will.

[[24:34]]
Last Book and Moore's Law

Leno's last book was 'Precision' by Simon Winchester, about precision invention from steam engines to Moore's Law. He marvels at iPhones having the equivalent of a billion transistors and more computing power than Apollo 13.

[[26:00]]
Best Part of Jay Leno's Garage

Leno says the best part is deducting his collection as a work expense, and that if you enjoy your work, it's not really work. He advises making your hobby your job.

Jay Leno's Garage Season 7 premieres with guests like Elon Musk, Tony Hawk, and President Biden, emphasizing innovation in electric vehicles and space travel. Leno's passion for cars and technology makes the show both entertaining and informative.

[00:00] are you ready to go ready or not it's

[00:02] time for another all-new unbelievable

[00:04] season

[00:05] of jaylon's garage this show much like

[00:08] this garbage truck is high-tech and this

[00:11] year we're not just reaching for the

[00:12] stars the source new technology in here

[00:14] there's a good chance the whole thing

[00:15] just blows up

[00:25] while driving incredibly all new car

[00:28] exclusive so you can fit her fridge in

[00:30] the back how do you feel you have to

[00:31] carry a fridge whenever you travel plus

[00:34] we get our hands on spectacular

[00:35] state-of-the-art technology I'm excited

[00:39] and terrified at the same time it's the

[00:41] world's first methane-powered tractor

[00:43] need more cow farts

[00:45] I just hope we all walk away in one

[00:48] piece I am quite a good driver

[00:51] but no promises

[00:53] is this where we make the smooth exit

[00:54] yeah

[00:57] [Music]

[01:03] what's going on everybody I'm DJ sixmith

[01:05] and Welcome to our Jay Leno's Garage

[01:07] YouTube live event we are here at the

[01:09] iconic garage the man himself Jay Leno

[01:11] Jay how are you man good very good

[01:13] thanks for coming we appreciate it

[01:14] thanks for having us out this place is

[01:16] unbelievable it's one thing to watch the

[01:18] show it's one thing to watch the Youtube

[01:19] Clips but it's even bigger in person so

[01:21] this is unbelievable thanks for having

[01:22] me well it's a lot of fun we just it's

[01:23] no real theme to this it's really more

[01:25] money than brains Club it just collect

[01:27] stuff that I like people go what's your

[01:29] overall theme it's not it's not like I

[01:32] have to have this model Ferrari or

[01:33] whatever it's just stuff I like you know

[01:35] and you've been doing this for a long

[01:37] time long time you keep buying the

[01:39] buildings you run out of space here man

[01:41] yeah I'm pre-social media that's so old

[01:43] it's almost hard to believe but yeah

[01:45] it's true well speaking of social media

[01:47] yeah Elon Musk is on the show tonight

[01:48] correct and you got to go to SpaceX and

[01:50] the people are loving the clips on

[01:52] social media whether it's YouTube or

[01:54] Instagram or Tick Tock and SpaceX is

[01:56] really fascinating and it's something a

[01:58] little bit different that you did on the

[01:59] show so what was the coolest part of

[02:00] that experience well it's fascinating

[02:02] because you realized two and a half

[02:03] years ago there was nothing there yeah I

[02:05] mean Cape Canaveral took years to build

[02:08] I mean this was done in two and a half

[02:10] years and he sent off dozens of rockets

[02:12] from there already

[02:14] um yeah it is fascinating because it's

[02:17] all well when you're my age everybody

[02:18] young but there's just a sense of it's

[02:21] almost like a big college or a high

[02:23] school you know and as you talk to Elon

[02:26] people come up and go you know excuse me

[02:28] um the trajectory here oh yeah yeah okay

[02:31] okay and you know he's carrying a lot of

[02:34] things in his head I don't think most

[02:36] people have ever met a genius we live in

[02:38] Hollywood you meet Geniuses on a daily

[02:40] basis but they're not successful

[02:41] Geniuses because something else has

[02:43] always kept them down or ruined their

[02:45] chances you know it's fun to meet a

[02:48] dreamer who is a practical dreamer you

[02:50] know Elon first came to my garage in

[02:52] 2007 with the Prototype uh electric

[02:55] sports car you know and I thought this

[02:57] is kind of interesting electric at that

[02:59] and that was an error when electric cars

[03:01] were golf carts they were slow and kind

[03:04] of cumbersome and yeah they got pretty

[03:07] good mileage accordingly but there

[03:09] weren't really something you know I

[03:10] remember him saying to me at the time uh

[03:13] what I want to do is put charging

[03:15] stations all up and down the coast so

[03:17] you could travel to San Francisco and

[03:18] I'm going yeah right that'll happen but

[03:20] you know something as he was building

[03:22] that prototype he was built getting the

[03:25] infrastructure and and putting it in

[03:27] because even the major manufacturers

[03:29] don't have

[03:30] infrastructure they go to somebody else

[03:32] and we're using Electrify America or

[03:34] whatever it might be but it's not there

[03:36] so that was the first sign that there

[03:39] was a genius here you know and

[03:42] unlike a lot I mean he lives on a

[03:44] trailer a little Airstream trailer not

[03:46] exactly a billionaire lifestyle no

[03:48] there's not there's no yacht and there's

[03:50] no huge gold finger looking thing and

[03:52] you know petting a cat or any of that

[03:54] nonsense you know I mean he's he's just

[03:57] uh

[03:58] well

[04:00] I mean I think he's a true genius I

[04:02] think it's safe to say because that's a

[04:04] term people throw around but there's

[04:07] really only been 4 000 in recorded

[04:09] history and he is and he's one of them

[04:11] but he seems like a regular guy and he

[04:14] talks like a regular guy and he gets

[04:17] upset and angry and frustrated like a

[04:19] regular guy but you realize

[04:22] and he also has the manufacturing

[04:24] knowledge you know when we talked

[04:26] he said something I never heard anyone

[04:28] say before he said it costs a billion

[04:30] dollars to put one gallon of water on

[04:33] Mars he wants to get that down to a

[04:35] hundred thousand dollars a gallon which

[04:36] still sounds ridiculous of course but

[04:38] it's not a billion it's a hundred

[04:40] thousand if it's a hundred thousand it

[04:42] go down to ten thousand it can go down

[04:43] to a thousand you know and he's got this

[04:46] plan to build a thousand Rockets which

[04:48] every three days will drop supplies

[04:51] three days every three days crazy a

[04:53] rocket will land on Mars and drop off

[04:55] supplies but you can only go every two

[04:57] years right to Mars

[04:59] well I'm not sure yeah I'm not sure

[05:01] exactly how it works but just the idea

[05:04] that you go okay and then you go to his

[05:06] facility and you see hundreds of these

[05:09] largest jet engines most powerful in the

[05:12] world ever made

[05:14] lined up and you go okay I guess he is

[05:16] going to build these so it it it's a

[05:19] fascinating experience

[05:21] just because you expect Geniuses to be

[05:25] I don't know just they would seem like a

[05:28] genius but he doesn't seem like he seems

[05:30] like a regular guy until you get into

[05:33] Math and Science and Manufacturing and

[05:35] every other thing yeah that's all Next

[05:37] Level stuff yeah and when you realize

[05:39] he's putting things on Mars while he's

[05:42] running SpaceX and now I guess Twitter

[05:45] you know so yeah it's hilarious to me

[05:48] it's very funny well let's take a look

[05:50] at this clip right now it's an all new

[05:51] episode tonight with Jay and Elon and

[05:54] we're going to look at the prototype for

[05:55] a rocket ship right now let's check out

[05:56] the clip here

[05:58] this is what goes all the way to orbit

[06:00] this sits on top of the booster right

[06:02] the ship is about 165 feet pole yeah I

[06:05] don't think anybody has any idea how big

[06:07] this is yeah it's a 30 foot in diameter

[06:10] on the inside yeah because when you see

[06:12] it on TV you're watching it from a half

[06:13] a mile away yeah I mean you're sending

[06:16] the Empire State Building into outer

[06:17] space basically here yeah it's a

[06:19] gigantic building it's in fact the the

[06:21] payload area has more volume than a 747.

[06:24] wow so but we can get closer if you want

[06:27] yes can we get a little closer

[06:31] so Jay I think you put it perfectly it's

[06:33] like the Empire State Building going up

[06:36] that's insane just the term rocket ship

[06:38] when you say it it sounds silly it

[06:40] sounds like you're in a Leslie Nielsen

[06:42] movie you know this is real life this is

[06:43] happening yeah and oh here's our rocket

[06:45] yeah okay and it is it's literally

[06:48] sending a building into space i i it's

[06:52] it really boggles the mind and when you

[06:54] go there it's all kids running around

[06:57] by kids I mean people in their 30 and

[07:00] below you know with computers and things

[07:02] and and just all this seems to be

[07:04] happening it doesn't seem to be any sort

[07:06] of you know Rhyme or Reason to it it's

[07:09] not you know in the old days you would

[07:11] have had guys from IBM with white shirts

[07:12] and a dark top it's a much different

[07:14] vibe yeah it's a much different vibe

[07:16] it's very laid back and

[07:19] I noticed anyone could approach Elon

[07:21] with the problem and say Elon excuse me

[07:24] I'm this whatever it is if you didn't

[07:27] know he might get upset but the fact

[07:30] that anybody could approach him and ask

[07:32] him how to solve a problem I I found

[07:34] fascinating as well he wasn't some

[07:37] isolated guy he's walking around in a

[07:38] t-shirt you wouldn't know which guy's

[07:40] the head guy you think oh that guy was a

[07:43] suit no it's not him he's just a regular

[07:45] guy yeah this was fascinating but he's

[07:48] always been ahead of the curve right you

[07:49] mentioned the fact that he was on the

[07:51] show with the beginnings of everything

[07:53] with Tesla Tesla as you mentioned on

[07:55] power launch yesterday is still the

[07:56] leader when it comes to like right right

[07:58] and the idea of being ahead of the Curve

[08:01] sometimes I think like I think out of

[08:03] the box but I don't because I remember

[08:04] saying to him so you think we'll have

[08:06] 200 mile an hour trains he goes no I'm

[08:08] building 800 miles I go 800 miles okay

[08:12] it never occurred to me to build an 800

[08:15] mile an hour it didn't even seem

[08:16] practical we have it in Japan we have it

[08:19] in parts of Europe okay maybe we could

[08:22] have that here no but he's talking 800

[08:24] underground in a tunnel you know like a

[08:27] vacuum tube and you go oh oh oh that was

[08:31] that wasn't even in my imagination

[08:34] so yeah it's fascinating well I'm sure

[08:36] another thing that wasn't your

[08:37] imagination is seeing old cars with the

[08:40] electrified situation now so Tony Hawk

[08:42] is on the show tonight right Tony

[08:44] Hawkins and he has his Corvette which

[08:45] has an electric motor I mean that must

[08:47] blow your mind to see how cars have

[08:48] expanded and grown all these years well

[08:50] it's you know it's all still hot running

[08:52] which is people get all upset about this

[08:54] but you know Corvettes are valuable but

[08:58] they're not rare and they're enough of

[09:00] them that are in bad shape that you

[09:02] could Electrify it and you could keep

[09:04] the if you ever wanted to go back to

[09:06] original again that's the smart thing

[09:07] about a lot of these like the people who

[09:09] do Porsches old Porsches and Electrify

[09:11] them they take the Porsche motor out

[09:13] they put it on the Shelf they put the

[09:15] electric motor in and they can go back

[09:17] at any time there's no cutting there's

[09:19] no you're not bastardizing the car in

[09:22] any way you know so it's just an

[09:24] interesting thing you know it's like rap

[09:26] and rock and roll they're both music you

[09:29] just might like one more than the other

[09:30] and to me I find with this

[09:32] electrification thing you have a lot of

[09:34] young people who don't really have an

[09:36] interest in the greasy parts of cars but

[09:39] like the artificial intelligence the

[09:42] electricity oh and that's their heart

[09:45] rotting okay and and there's plenty of

[09:47] room for both you know and I think it's

[09:50] just expanding the genre that's all well

[09:52] I think people are going to like this

[09:53] one let's check out the clip right now

[09:54] this is Tony Hawk on tonight's episode

[09:56] of Jay Leno's Garage let's watch it

[09:58] right now

[09:59] I'm gonna get this skateboarding

[10:00] nonsense out of his head and get a real

[10:03] job as an insurance salesman or

[10:04] something they were surprisingly

[10:05] supportive yeah yeah yeah my dad passed

[10:08] away in 95 that was right before I had

[10:10] my big waves of success right but my mom

[10:13] she used to literally stop strangers in

[10:16] the airport say my son is Tony Hawk

[10:18] that's funny it's nice when I'm not with

[10:19] her but when I was with her it's awkward

[10:21] yeah yeah what did your dad do uh he was

[10:24] in the Navy during World War II wow and

[10:27] then uh he retired in San Diego it was

[10:30] kind of a jack of all trades so he did a

[10:32] lot of handyman work he worked on cars

[10:34] he actually formed the national

[10:35] skateboard Association when there was no

[10:37] governing or sanctioning body for skate

[10:40] events oh is that right yeah so he was

[10:42] the biggest supporter oh that's pretty

[10:43] cool

[10:45] all right

[10:49] Jay one of the things I think you do the

[10:50] best is getting people to open up and

[10:52] just be conversational and Casual while

[10:54] on the road Tony's talking about his

[10:56] father and his mother how do you do that

[10:57] with folks when they come on well it's

[10:58] interesting because he's not a real car

[11:00] guy right his his thing was

[11:02] what would be practical and efficient

[11:06] without having to get greasy and dirty

[11:08] oh electrification so that's that's what

[11:11] it is you know it's like to a lot of

[11:13] people a car is a million Appliance like

[11:15] an refrigerator or something like that

[11:17] so if you could just plug it in and

[11:18] never have to worry about it that's the

[11:20] real selling point electric cars those

[11:22] of us enjoy working on them well you'll

[11:24] always have this stuff it'll be around

[11:25] for a few hundred years I mean people

[11:28] are still restoring cars from the turn

[11:30] to the last century right so so the fact

[11:32] that it's going to disappear I I don't

[11:34] think is is going to happen so one of

[11:36] the cool things about the fact they're

[11:37] in season seven is that you have people

[11:39] that are coming back on the show right

[11:40] Kelly Clarkson is one of those people

[11:42] what was it like to have her back on

[11:43] that's coming up in a few episodes I met

[11:45] Kelly when she won American Idol and she

[11:47] came on the tonight she goes that was

[11:48] part of the deal you win the show then

[11:50] you go on American Idol then you sing a

[11:52] song and then what usually happens is

[11:53] you disappear and you never heard of

[11:55] again but you know she actually became a

[11:57] huge star yeah you know it's people like

[11:59] her Jennifer Hudson you know whatever so

[12:01] and you know and she's a great kid she's

[12:03] pays her dues I like people like that

[12:05] she earned her each step of the way you

[12:08] know and here it is like 20 years more

[12:10] than 20 years later since she was with

[12:12] me on American Idol and we've been

[12:13] friends ever since so she's done the

[12:15] show a few times and you know she's game

[12:17] for everything she's a country girl you

[12:19] know she likes driving tractors and

[12:21] getting her hands dirty there's none of

[12:23] this oh I'm sorry it's it's my light on

[12:26] this side of me you don't get any of

[12:27] that nonsense like you do with a lot of

[12:29] people you know you have very very down

[12:30] home very down to earth well I think the

[12:32] people are going to like this episode

[12:33] let's check out a clip right now this

[12:35] guy and Kelly Clarkson with some hay and

[12:37] some tractors let's check it out right

[12:39] now

[12:40] that's right Jay I'm amazing

[12:43] [Music]

[12:48] what's that flower one here on a slow

[12:51] start y'all to slow start the physic

[12:53] getting the hay in the buckets is he

[12:55] going over the hay bales

[13:01] need more cow farts

[13:07] so that was Kelly Clarkson she's coming

[13:09] up in a few episodes and speaking of

[13:11] later on the season you got to hang out

[13:12] with President Biden and listen you've

[13:14] had some very cool people on the show

[13:15] but president of the United States

[13:16] Electric truck that must have been

[13:18] really special for you and you had the

[13:19] Secret Service to deal with as well so

[13:21] what was that like yeah well that was

[13:22] interesting you know what's so funny

[13:23] I've been doing this a long time so I

[13:24] knew Biden when he was just a politician

[13:26] running I had him on

[13:28] I remember teasing about his hair

[13:30] implants like 25 years ago you know so

[13:34] that he was a joke in the monologue you

[13:36] know so we've been friends for a long

[13:38] time and he's he's a car guy his dad was

[13:41] a big Chevy distributor had a dealership

[13:43] and uh when when he got married in 67

[13:46] his dad gave him a 67 Corvette which he

[13:49] still had a wedding gift yeah he still

[13:52] hasn't still because you know president

[13:53] is never allowed to drive you know that

[13:55] you you lose your license for life

[13:57] that's one reason why it's a terrible

[13:58] job I didn't know that until you said

[14:00] that yeah no that's true that's true but

[14:02] he can drive on private property same

[14:04] thing when we went down to see President

[14:05] Bush he's got like I don't know 400 acre

[14:08] ranch so he can drive he can drive

[14:10] around there but he can't go out in the

[14:11] public Street yeah but no it's fun it

[14:14] was it was fascinating to see the inner

[14:17] workings of I mean when a president

[14:19] moves first of all three helicopters

[14:21] come wow one of them has the president

[14:24] okay you don't know which one nobody

[14:26] does except Secret Service and so okay

[14:28] uh I'll walk towards the I'll just wait

[14:31] till I see him you know and whichever

[14:32] one he gets out of you know so just all

[14:34] those kind of things like that and the

[14:36] other thing is you know as you're

[14:38] talking you go this is really fast

[14:41] is that a sniper on the building you

[14:44] know it's a little different right oh

[14:46] there's a guy up there oh all right you

[14:48] know I'm not going to make any sudden

[14:49] moves yeah

[14:51] So speaking of Jay and President Biden

[14:53] let's take a look at this clip this is

[14:54] coming up later on in the season on Jay

[14:56] Leto's garage it's Jay and President

[14:58] Biden in the electric truck let's check

[14:59] it out right now electric car is a big

[15:02] part of your climate for lunch the

[15:03] gigantic part yeah also part of the what

[15:06] people don't realize is part of the

[15:08] infrastructure building you know

[15:09] building highways and the like because

[15:11] we're talking about putting 500 000

[15:13] charging stations and the money for

[15:15] those charging stations in that bill in

[15:17] addition to the charging stations

[15:18] individual companies are putting in so

[15:21] it's you know it's a game changer you

[15:22] got 40 percent of all pollution all the

[15:25] CO2 going up is from a tailpipe right

[15:28] and imagine if we just changed that

[15:33] that was Jay Leno and President Biden

[15:35] coming up later on this season again

[15:36] Elon Musk Tony Hawk tignataro tonight 10

[15:40] p.m Eastern on CNBC so Jay we got the

[15:42] people involved they love you on social

[15:45] media Love You on YouTube well thanks we

[15:46] got some questions here you ready to

[15:48] answer some of these all right okay so

[15:50] this one is from Instagram it's from go

[15:52] ahead Payne and he wants to know do you

[15:54] believe the future will only be electric

[15:56] or will there be a coexistence with fuel

[15:59] engines as well well I I think you'll be

[16:01] coexistent uh hydrogen is the

[16:05] sort of

[16:07] what's the the secret weapon here too

[16:09] you know hydrogen has had a problem

[16:10] because the word hydrogen people

[16:14] immediately conjure up the Hindenburg

[16:16] which did not blow up because of

[16:17] hydrogen but that's a separate thing uh

[16:20] but it just it seems to frighten people

[16:22] but hydrogen I drove a number of

[16:25] hydrogen cars it was very impressive

[16:26] they are also electric they just they

[16:29] turn the car basically into a battery a

[16:32] hydrogen is an interesting one synthetic

[16:34] fuels a portion Now is working on

[16:36] non-polluting synthetic fuels whether

[16:39] they're able to make it for

[16:42] a dollar to two dollars per gallon and

[16:45] what's it made from so anything could

[16:48] happen but you know when once you flood

[16:49] the market you know when beta came out

[16:52] and VHS came out beta was better right

[16:55] so but VHS was cheaper so VHS flooded

[16:59] the market with vhs's and VHS tapes and

[17:03] by that point everybody had a VHS okay

[17:05] that's what it is and that's where we

[17:07] are with electric if anything else is

[17:08] going to come along

[17:10] it's going to be tough to beat Electric

[17:12] you know I can remember as much as 20

[17:14] years ago people thought it would take

[17:16] 75 years to go to Electric but it hasn't

[17:19] I mean it took 75 years for every

[17:21] American to get a telephone it took five

[17:24] years for every American to have a

[17:25] computer and now this electric thing

[17:27] could happen within 10 years probably so

[17:30] well I think it's pretty interesting

[17:31] being here because with the collection

[17:33] you have you can see the history of cars

[17:35] I mean we're talking less than 100 years

[17:36] in terms of the Transformations well I

[17:38] have a 1909 electric car a 1914 electric

[17:41] car and I have steam cars steam steam

[17:44] ran everything from 1820 to about 1911.

[17:48] then internal combustion 1911 to just

[17:50] about now and starting in 2030 electric

[17:53] will become the next one so yeah it's

[17:57] just you know Mark Twain used to say I

[17:59] like progress It's change I don't like

[18:00] and that's where where people are they

[18:03] they're all suspicious I don't know this

[18:05] is a good idea well this is America you

[18:07] move forward you come up with new ideas

[18:08] if something is

[18:10] cheaper better more efficient it's going

[18:13] to win you know for new technologies

[18:16] exceed it can't be equal it's got to be

[18:17] superior and right now electricity the

[18:21] biggest drawback is range but now you're

[18:24] getting cars 300 400 Mercedes now 600

[18:28] mile range it's a game changer yeah more

[18:29] charging stations too on the right and

[18:31] more charging stations on the road

[18:32] correct so the great thing about your

[18:34] show is that you have the cars we have

[18:35] the stars as well so Tim Allen is coming

[18:37] up not tonight but next week right yeah

[18:39] and we have a question here how long

[18:41] have you and timeline been friends oh we

[18:44] go back to oh God the comedy club in the

[18:47] 70s you know uh I I imagine you met him

[18:50] out here or you met no I met him in

[18:51] Detroit at uh what was that uh the

[18:56] comedy club in uh in Detroit I think it

[18:59] just went out of my mind but yeah that's

[19:00] when we first met I was working he came

[19:02] in and did a guest set and we became

[19:04] friends yeah now there's a lot of folks

[19:06] that do the Jay Leno impersonation but

[19:07] is is Tim Allen at the top of your list

[19:09] in terms of the J impersonation because

[19:11] we'll see that on the show too uh it's a

[19:13] horrible I mean people go oh is it who

[19:17] was that I don't know who it was he has

[19:19] to tell him that it's me and then they

[19:21] go oh no that would be too cruel and

[19:22] then no it doesn't resemble me in any

[19:25] way is there anybody that that does uh

[19:27] me you there you go yeah I I'm classic

[19:30] they're pretty good I do it and people

[19:31] hey that sounds like change that sounds

[19:33] like you all right here's another

[19:34] question yes what is going to excite the

[19:36] next generation of car people

[19:39] the Next Generation Well that that's it

[19:41] that's the exciting point you know the

[19:42] future is very hard to predict uh when I

[19:44] was a kid they predicted flying cars and

[19:46] you wouldn't sit down to dinner you'd

[19:48] have a pill which would have everything

[19:50] you know and none of those things nobody

[19:51] ever predicted you walk around with all

[19:54] the information of the world in your

[19:55] hand you know when I was in the fourth

[19:58] grade A guy from Bell Telephone came to

[20:00] our grade school and said by the time we

[20:01] were grown-ups no American would be less

[20:04] than one mile from a telephone no matter

[20:06] where you were in the United States

[20:08] you only had to go a mile to find a

[20:10] phone even though it's death of the

[20:11] place there'd be a phone with the

[20:13] mileage that seemed like wow that's

[20:14] unbelievable imagine just walking a mile

[20:16] you know so uh it's almost impossible to

[20:20] predict you know I remember remember

[20:22] Hewlett Packard told Bill Gates

[20:24] Americans do not want computers in their

[20:27] homes believe me son nobody wants to

[20:30] have a computer that's for the scientist

[20:32] you know so it's very hard you never you

[20:35] never know what brings about the social

[20:36] change sometimes it's culture sometimes

[20:39] it's music you don't know what's so it's

[20:41] hard to predict the other thing that

[20:43] folks like to ask about is how you

[20:45] started collecting cars and I know that

[20:47] there's a jaguar in here that you go

[20:49] back all the way to your childhood that

[20:50] when you were nine years old you saw the

[20:52] Jaguar so yeah what got you into it and

[20:54] how have you expanded this place well I

[20:55] grew up in New England and when I was a

[20:57] kid boys are just expected to fix the

[21:00] lawnmower or the snowmobile or whatever

[21:03] it might be and it was just a hobby you

[21:06] know we had a big feel behind our house

[21:07] and you'd find an abandoned car and we

[21:10] were just driving around in circles my

[21:12] mother would watch from the kitchen

[21:13] window you know nowadays because they

[21:16] call Child Services and the parents

[21:17] would be taken away yeah but but back

[21:20] then you just go out 12 year olds having

[21:22] a car did not seem like a bad thing

[21:24] because he knew where you were and I met

[21:27] my mother watching us when and the car

[21:29] just rolled over you know with a bunch

[21:31] of us in it my mother comes running out

[21:33] you know yeah so yeah it was a different

[21:35] time a much different time different

[21:37] time

[21:37] so you have a lot of great cars here

[21:39] before we wrap up you have a Buick

[21:41] that's really special to you well that's

[21:42] my 50s I bought that when I came to

[21:44] California I bought it out of the

[21:46] Pennysaver

[21:47] you know I got out I got off the plane I

[21:49] said I gotta find a car I got the Penny

[21:52] Saver and I looked at a dresser and said

[21:53] Winchester said here's a Buick it's in

[21:56] how far is Winchester okay so that's

[21:57] about three miles from the airport oh so

[21:59] I got a cab I went to the uh I went to

[22:02] the place

[22:03] and then I realized well if I don't buy

[22:04] this car I have no way to get so I just

[22:07] bought it wow well thought out plan as

[22:10] you can see and I've had it ever since

[22:12] that's awesome and then you have a car

[22:14] that Johnny Carson was very yeah that

[22:16] was Johnny Carson's dad's car that's a

[22:17] 1939 Chrysler Johnny Carson's dad bought

[22:20] that new Johnny went to his prominent

[22:22] and if you watch a special called Johnny

[22:24] goes home or Johnny comes home back in

[22:27] 82 you'll see you know old old uh eight

[22:31] Miller footage of Johnny polishing it

[22:34] when he was 12 and then going to his

[22:36] prom when he was 18. and when Johnny

[22:38] died he left that in his will to me so

[22:40] that's amazing yeah that was yeah that

[22:42] was great I I cherished that car I

[22:44] learned you also have his Tonight Show

[22:45] desk here as well

[22:46] yeah well there were a bunch of those a

[22:49] bunch of those Tonight Show deaths so

[22:50] that was pretty special oh yeah yeah but

[22:52] not as special the car was the car yeah

[22:54] I mean the fact that he left that to you

[22:55] that must have been a surprise as well

[22:57] it was a huge surprise I mean the desk

[22:58] is a prop it's not even a real desk you

[23:01] know you could use it as a desk the car

[23:03] is different yeah the car is different

[23:05] you know because Johnny had a real

[23:06] connection with the car I gotcha all

[23:08] right a couple rapid fire personal

[23:09] questions

[23:10] we are out of here no yes yes no go

[23:14] ahead what is your favorite movie of all

[23:15] time

[23:17] oh

[23:18] well I I like The Godfather but I also

[23:21] like Miracle on 34th Street you know as

[23:23] a kid I liked it because

[23:25] you didn't really have to believe in

[23:27] Senate it wasn't you know I mean it had

[23:30] enough realistic stuff and I remember

[23:32] watches thinking how is this going to

[23:33] end and of course it ends with the post

[23:36] office declaring him Santa Claus because

[23:39] the mail got delivered to him and I

[23:41] thought I just thought that was so

[23:42] clever because it was a logical so many

[23:46] fantasy movies have a fantasy ending

[23:48] yeah that was realistic and that had a

[23:50] realistic well and of course the judge

[23:52] who's running for the election well if

[23:54] the United States government says you

[23:55] said he's Santa Claus they call him he's

[23:58] Santa Claus well by God he's Santa Claus

[24:00] you know and I I just oh I just I

[24:02] thought it was the most clever ending of

[24:03] any film yeah I love that movie what's

[24:04] your go-to meal what's your favorite

[24:06] food oh favorite well you have to

[24:08] understand food

[24:10] that's okay right now it's better than

[24:13] delicious food in an hour yeah I just

[24:15] want to eat right can I just get

[24:16] something I mean most of my meals are

[24:18] from people in paper hats I I can't say

[24:20] that you know having a gourmet oh you're

[24:22] not that guy no having you know it's

[24:24] it's something or other of something no

[24:26] but that being said probably something

[24:28] Italian yeah yeah okay what is the last

[24:31] book you read oh last book ever

[24:34] um ah you know Precision by Simon

[24:37] Winchester it's a book about the

[24:40] invention of precision and it starts

[24:42] with steam engines right up to what you

[24:44] have now you have something called Morse

[24:46] law which is that started the computer

[24:48] industry that every year he had the

[24:51] double capacity and half the size so

[24:54] consequently you get things like an

[24:56] Apple Watch and you have you have you

[24:59] know a little I can how many

[25:02] like radios like an iPhone doesn't have

[25:05] transistors right but it has the

[25:07] equivalent of something like a billion

[25:09] transistors some crazy thing like that

[25:11] you almost hard to believe but that's

[25:14] that that's Moore's Law taken to the

[25:16] extreme every year it gets smaller more

[25:18] compact you know if you ever watch old

[25:20] TV shows like manix to solve a crime he

[25:23] goes in the computer room which is big

[25:24] as this room with giant reel to reels

[25:26] and now you realize your iPhone has 10

[25:29] times that capacity it's in your pocket

[25:30] yeah I mean you carry more Computing

[25:33] than the Apollo 13.

[25:36] yeah so yeah so that's but that's a good

[25:39] book Simon Winchester if you like

[25:40] precision and how things are made and

[25:43] Manufacturing yeah it's great lastly

[25:45] what is the best part about doing Jay

[25:47] Leno's garage

[25:48] well the best part about it is I can

[25:51] deduct all this stuff because well this

[25:53] is my work so you can sort of write it

[25:56] off I mean I remember someone once

[25:58] saying that if you enjoy your work it's

[26:00] not really work

[26:01] and that's what I do you know you know I

[26:04] remember for like six months I went to

[26:06] Bentley School of accounting and finance

[26:07] I don't know why I'm dyslexic I don't

[26:09] know why I went there because it was

[26:11] near my house I guess and I just flunked

[26:13] out and I thought what am I going to do

[26:14] so I found why don't I find something

[26:16] I'm interested in and and do that and

[26:18] make you know make make your hobby your

[26:21] job well I'm glad you wound up as Jay

[26:23] Leno the comedian and then the car guy

[26:25] and not the accountant right yeah we

[26:27] wouldn't be here today no we'd all be in

[26:28] jail if I was the account all right

[26:30] there you have it folks tonight 10 p.m

[26:33] Eastern an all-new episode of Jay Leno's

[26:34] garage for Jay I'm DJ we'll see you next

[26:37] time here on YouTube DJ thank you thank

[26:39] you man

[26:49] [Music]

[26:56] thank you
