AI Summary

Mary U demonstrates how to create high-quality Live2D VTuber models using Procreate on iPad, overcoming the 40-layer limit by splitting models into multiple PSD files. She shares her complete workflow, from canvas setup and symmetrical drawing to exporting and fixing common PSD export issues.

[00:00]
Overcoming Procreate's Layer Limit

Procreate has a 40-layer limit, but you can split your model into 2-5 files, export as PSDs, and piece them together in Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint.

[01:10]
Canvas Setup for Symmetry

Create a canvas with width >3000px and height 4000-5000px to have >10 layers. Enable Drawing Guide with Symmetry, and set a shortcut for assisted drawing.

[02:35]
Sketching and Color Adjustment

Include all details and colors in the sketch. Merge layers, then adjust saturation up by ~10% to compensate for Live2D desaturation. Duplicate the file for detailed work.

[03:04]
Cropping to Save Layers

Duplicate the sketch file and crop to just the head or body to free up layers. Use a low-opacity reference layer for tracing and a 100% one for color picking.

[04:00]
Liquify and Coloring Tips

Use Liquify to adjust shapes. For coloring, use automatic selection with feather (~3%) and color drop. Alpha lock layers to change line art colors without spilling.

[05:00]
Hair Brush and Shadow Trick

Use a special hair brush that creates line art automatically. For shadows, duplicate the layer, lower brightness, move down, add blur, adjust curves (increase red), then Alpha lock and airbrush a cool color.

[07:49]
Cutting Guide and Art Tips

Avoid eyes pointing outward. Draw extra hair layers for volume. Use underfills (solid color instead of line art) for chest/torso/hair to create a 3D outline effect.

[08:37]
Exporting and PSD Border Bug

Separate left/right eyes and symmetrical parts. Export as PSD. Important: Procreate PSDs have an invisible border that messes up Live2D auto-meshing. Crop the PSD in Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint before sending to a rigger.

By splitting models into multiple files and using the right techniques, you can create professional VTuber models in Procreate despite its layer limit. Always crop exported PSDs to avoid the invisible border bug in Live2D.

[00:00] hi I'm Mary U and as you may know V

[00:03] models are notorious for needing to be

[00:05] separated in parts and layers often

[00:07] hundreds of them but today that 40 layer

[00:10] limit in PR crate is not going to stop

[00:11] me from achieving greatness and it will

[00:13] not stop you either I'm showcasing some

[00:16] of my recent models that I drew with

[00:18] procreate and rig and live 2D I have

[00:20] been a loyal procreate user since the

[00:23] beginning of my aring career all my

[00:25] models are drawn completely in prr never

[00:27] changed even at the toughest times never

[00:30] doubted you want te my G so if I can do

[00:32] it you can also create models of this

[00:35] quality and I will show you how the

[00:37] general solution is to sever your model

[00:39] into Parts usually two to five files

[00:42] export them as psds then piece them

[00:44] together at the end on the computer

[00:46] using Photoshop or Clips paint I'll show

[00:49] you the complete process and things you

[00:51] need to look out for please watch until

[00:53] the end because there is one big common

[00:55] problem with exporting psds from

[00:58] procreate if this is your first try

[01:00] making VOR models I recommend starting

[01:02] off with a chibi or a half body model to

[01:04] keep things easier and to get familiar

[01:06] with the overall workflow

[01:10] first okay let's start with per cre

[01:13] setup when you first create a canvas

[01:15] preferably make the width more than

[01:17] 3,000 and the length according to your

[01:19] character's height I usually give myself

[01:21] 4 to 5,000 but try to have more than 10

[01:24] layers available then go to settings

[01:27] canvas toggle drawing guide edit drawing

[01:31] guide and go to Symmetry and done now

[01:35] your current layer should stay assisted

[01:37] and everything you draw is symmetrical

[01:39] you can go back to settings and toggle

[01:41] off the drawing guide to get rid of the

[01:43] line and as long as your layer still

[01:45] says assisted it's still going to be

[01:47] symmetrical but when you make a new

[01:49] layer normally you have to turn on and

[01:51] off the cyst by clicking on the layer

[01:54] but I find it much more practical to

[01:56] make this button a shortcut so to do

[01:58] that go in settings preps gesture

[02:01] controls and in assisted drawing turn on

[02:05] the first tap Square setting and it

[02:08] might conflict with your default

[02:09] shortcut but screw whichever shortcut

[02:11] you previously had and now that this

[02:13] button is drawing assist you can sketch

[02:15] your model out way easier hopefully I'm

[02:19] going to put my sketch time lapse as

[02:21] examples it's just a sketch but try to

[02:24] include all the details and colors you

[02:26] need this is because it will be much

[02:28] harder to adjust these things later on

[02:30] while seeing how the entire model looks

[02:33] since your model will be severed when

[02:35] you're done with your sketch you can

[02:37] merge all the layers by pinching them

[02:39] together I mean if you want to preserve

[02:41] them you can duplicate your file but

[02:43] before we move on I found out that life

[02:46] 2D actually desaturates the PSD exported

[02:49] from procreate by like 10% so I'm going

[02:52] to turn the saturation up in the sketch

[02:55] beforehand to compensate for that and

[02:58] since everything's one layer it's it's

[02:59] easier to do color adjustments and this

[03:01] was my final color adjustment and to

[03:04] move on to the detailed model going to

[03:06] duplicate my file just going to one of

[03:09] them and going to crop tojust the

[03:15] head and I can turn on snapping to

[03:18] center it and crop out all the empty

[03:20] space to save more layers similarly if

[03:24] you want to move onto the body or legs

[03:26] just duplicate the original sketch and

[03:28] then crop to get more layers now for the

[03:30] reference layers I duplicated to have

[03:33] two one on low opacity and one on 100%

[03:36] opacity the lower one is for tracing and

[03:38] the higher one for color picking so I'm

[03:41] going to demonstrate I'm going to make

[03:42] some new layers turn on our assisted

[03:45] with our short cut and you can watch me

[03:47] struggle with line art I do find that my

[03:49] line art looks very pixelated a lot of

[03:52] times you can turn on anti- aazing in

[03:54] your brush settings find a smoother

[03:57] brush or make the canvas bigger but I

[03:59] just Incorporated it with my sketchy art

[04:00] style my first tip is that lufy is your

[04:04] best friend is my best friend anyway and

[04:07] once you have an enclosed line art you

[04:09] can go to select in

[04:12] automatic click the outside of the line

[04:15] art hold and drag left and right to

[04:17] adjust the threshold and to further

[04:19] avoid the type of overfilled

[04:22] border we can click on feather and have

[04:25] around

[04:26] 3% and click invert then go into layers

[04:30] make a new layer underneath toggle on

[04:32] the 100% reference layer hold to pick

[04:35] the color turn it off and then color

[04:37] drop on our current layer when you color

[04:40] drop don't let go and then hold to drag

[04:42] left and right for the threshold again

[04:44] that's what the feather is for and

[04:46] utilize your appropriate shortcuts like

[04:48] if I want to Alpha lock this layer I can

[04:51] swipe to the right with two fingers on

[04:53] the layer and now I can change the color

[04:55] of my line art without the color

[04:57] spilling outside

[05:00] also I have this life-saving hair brush

[05:03] Auto line art that I'm going to upload

[05:05] along with my whole favorite brush set

[05:07] on COI for free Link in the description

[05:09] most brushes are not created by me I

[05:11] just stole them from different free

[05:12] brush sets Okay so the way you use this

[05:15] brush is that first you draw the hair

[05:17] out it's going to be white don't worry

[05:20] okay then duplicate the layer so swipe

[05:23] left on the layer and duplicate set the

[05:26] top layer mode to multiply Alpha lock

[05:28] the bottom layer

[05:31] and color pick the color you want color

[05:33] it in and just continue rendering on the

[05:36] same layer now I usually do all the

[05:39] shading

[05:41] everything oh but one thing to note is

[05:43] that the outline brush doesn't work if

[05:45] the color you pick is completely black

[05:48] yeah but just choose a color that's

[05:49] close to it there is so much potential

[05:52] with this brush if you're not that py on

[05:54] line art consistency I also love the

[05:57] fact that you can lufy multiple layers

[05:59] together together by swiping right on

[06:01] the layer to select multiple and if your

[06:03] primary layer which is the one in the

[06:05] deeper blue is assisted then your

[06:07] liquify is also going to be assisted if

[06:10] not then it's not going to be

[06:14] assisted when you're done the hair

[06:16] layers you can merge those together and

[06:18] I'm going to teach you a quick Shadow

[06:20] trick which is to duplicate the layer

[06:22] select the bottom one go to adjustments

[06:25] Hue saturation brightness lower the

[06:27] brightness to none

[06:29] click on the cursor to select your layer

[06:31] move it downwards then go to adjustments

[06:35] CAU and blur swipe left and right to

[06:38] adjust the blur then go to adjustments

[06:40] curves and I usually just turn the red

[06:44] up then I can Alpha lock the layer turn

[06:47] the opacity down select a bluish color

[06:52] and airbrush it on the shadow to give it

[06:54] a secondary color for like a cooler

[06:57] sense of depth okay it's hard to

[07:00] visualize on my balding head so these

[07:02] are actual examples of how my bangs

[07:05] would turn out using this

[07:06] method also if I want to separate these

[07:09] two hair strands I can just select swipe

[07:12] down with three fingers select cut and

[07:15] paste it's really nice quick menu

[07:18] shortcut so let's say if I move on to

[07:21] the body I would want a copy of my

[07:24] rendered head on top of it so that I can

[07:26] visualize everything better but I don't

[07:28] want to save my severed head as a PNG in

[07:31] my album so I can import it into my

[07:33] other file so I can just go to actions

[07:36] copy canvas go back to my body file and

[07:39] I can paste and there it is my head also

[07:43] turn on snapping magnetics so that your

[07:46] parts move in a straight line and now

[07:49] that you have all the tools and

[07:50] shortcuts you can continue drawing the

[07:52] model I have a cutting guide for you to

[07:54] follow some general tips for the art is

[07:57] that first try to avoid es pointing

[08:00] outwards they're going to look like

[08:02] their gaze is not focused and then

[08:04] second I recommend drawing some extra

[08:07] hair layers on the sides at the back and

[08:09] covering the forehead just so that

[08:11] there's more volume when rigging and you

[08:13] know so that your character doesn't

[08:14] accidentally look Bold and the last one

[08:17] I found out recently is underfills so

[08:19] it's basically instead of line art you

[08:21] have a solid color it's great for chest

[08:25] torso and hair to give that 3D outline

[08:28] disappearing effect if interested you

[08:30] can look more into this from other

[08:31] artist and riggers they explain it more

[08:34] in detail than I do so last thing when

[08:37] you're exporting when you're done

[08:39] everything you named all your layers

[08:41] you've grouped everything into proper

[08:43] folders you still need to separate left

[08:45] eye to right eye and all the symmetrical

[08:48] but non-connected Parts you can separate

[08:50] these later in Photoshop but I will just

[08:53] go in and select half the face erase a

[08:56] half of it because I can just copy paste

[08:58] it and flip it in live 2D in fact if

[09:01] you're plenty of layers away from your

[09:03] layer limit you can even just duplicate

[09:05] the folder and flip it in

[09:08] procreate so now to export you can go to

[09:12] actions a share PSD I'm just uploading

[09:15] it onto drive you can also upload

[09:17] multiple psds at the same time by going

[09:20] back to gallery and click select select

[09:22] your psds and Click Share so there's one

[09:25] last big important thing it's like a bug

[09:28] when you open and exported PSD from

[09:31] procreate in life 2D it has this

[09:34] invisible border around all the layers

[09:36] like right now it's supposed to show me

[09:38] the layer's boundaries right but it's

[09:40] showing me the whole canvas and that

[09:42] will mess up the auto matching by a lot

[09:44] because it will not be able to give a

[09:46] very detailed mesh and the solution to

[09:49] this problem is just to crop your PSD in

[09:52] Photoshop or Clips you to a paint so I

[09:55] can crop the whole canvas outwards and

[09:57] it'll still work technically if you're

[09:59] assembling a full body you'll need to

[10:01] extend the canvas anyway and the problem

[10:03] is fixed so remember never send the raw

[10:07] PSD from procreate and crop to a riger

[10:09] with the Border because it will mess up

[10:11] Auto meshing and trust me I have been

[10:13] there in pain and confusion also if your

[10:16] PSC does not open in live 2D there is a

[10:18] manual page that I recommend you search

[10:20] up so yeah now that the art is completed

[10:24] if you want to rig the model I got a

[10:25] full step-by-step tutorial and if you

[10:28] have any questions this discussions and

[10:30] want to share your art feel free to join

[10:31] my Discord server and I wish you get to

[10:34] create the YouTuber of your dreams
