What VTubers Should Know before Crafting Lore

[00:02] vtuber backstories and lore are a huge

[00:04] part of V tubing culture just look at

[00:07] any popular vtuber from Big agencies

[00:09] like Hol live every single one of them

[00:11] has a backstory of their character so

[00:13] with that kind of standard it's no

[00:15] wonder why many aspiring vtubers are

[00:17] also writing up their own backstories

[00:20] but the problem is a lot of them get

[00:22] stuck on it and ask people like me to

[00:25] either help them with it or if they even

[00:27] need a backstory in the first place and

[00:29] that ladies and Gent gentl is what I'll

[00:31] be talking about in today's video to

[00:33] give a good answer we must first have a

[00:35] good understanding of what it means to

[00:37] have a character backstory in general

[00:39] let's look at any form of narrative

[00:41] storytelling books games anime you name

[00:44] it chances are you'll probably have a

[00:47] character in one of these mediums that

[00:49] you love dearly these tend to be very

[00:51] deep and well flashed out characters

[00:52] that the viewer can relate to on some

[00:54] level B Jew you fing ass they usually

[00:57] have well- defined personalities goals

[00:59] and TRS stes that due to the nature of

[01:01] Storytelling in these mediums are

[01:03] gradually revealed to us throughout the

[01:05] narrative this is important so just keep

[01:07] that in the back of your head for now so

[01:09] how does everything I just said relate

[01:11] to vtubers at the end of the day a

[01:13] vtuber is a character therefore vtubers

[01:15] inherently share the same processes of

[01:18] creation that a character in fictional

[01:20] stories that we all know and love would

[01:22] too they have a design drawn up a

[01:24] personality considered and a backstory

[01:26] crafted but vtubers differ in one major

[01:29] way we are not bound to a fictional

[01:32] world and therefore we are not beholden

[01:34] to a World's overarching narrative I'm

[01:38] free and because of this Freedom we are

[01:41] simply not required to have a

[01:43] backstory yep okay that answers that so

[01:46] that's the end of the video I guess or

[01:48] is

[01:48] it you see while vtubers don't need a

[01:51] backstory it doesn't mean that we can't

[01:53] have one remember what I said earlier a

[01:56] character's story is slowly revealed to

[01:58] us throughout a runtime medium but but

[02:00] it's precisely this or lack thereof that

[02:02] makes Back stories less necessary for us

[02:05] as we can't leverage this aspect now

[02:07] that being said it would be a really

[02:09] cool concept to have a vtuber go through

[02:11] some sort of very intentional story arc

[02:13] over the course of their time V tubing

[02:15] where we gradually see things and

[02:17] changes in their characters the same way

[02:19] we see development of one in something

[02:21] like a show or book but I digress so

[02:24] while we can't necessarily leverage such

[02:26] a thing to the same degree a good

[02:28] backstory does help in air creative ways

[02:30] when it comes to creating your character

[02:32] think of it this way when you're

[02:33] brainstorming your vtuber character and

[02:35] imagining all the different ways they

[02:37] could look or act you're already forming

[02:39] some sort of story in your mind and the

[02:42] more coherent we make that story The

[02:44] more coherent our design will end up

[02:45] being if all you do is think of ideas on

[02:48] top of ideas then it will likely result

[02:50] in a messy cluster of elements that

[02:52] don't tend to work very well together

[02:54] when put as a whole this is a bucket

[02:58] dear God there there's more no so how

[03:02] can we leverage a backstory to improve

[03:04] our vtuber designs well firstly

[03:07] designing a vtuber can be its own big

[03:08] video as there is a lot to cover on that

[03:10] specific topic but for this video let me

[03:13] give you some things to think about when

[03:14] making your backstory and model design

[03:16] the first one should be obvious what is

[03:18] your overarching theme are you a surfer

[03:21] are you a bird or perhaps a cool

[03:25] Mech whatever you choose will become the

[03:28] foundation you build upon next ask

[03:30] yourself how did this character of mine

[03:32] come to be and what are their goals and

[03:34] motivations were they assassins that had

[03:36] a day job as a surfer or lifeguard as a

[03:39] front but because of their proficiency

[03:40] with water they specialize in Sea based

[03:43] assassinations like infiltrating cargo

[03:44] ships or enemy warships 007 style maybe

[03:47] this Affinity with water and

[03:49] assassination can be incorporated into

[03:51] the design perhaps they have a wave

[03:53] pattern piece of dark clothing to

[03:54] signify both aspects of their character

[03:57] thirdly what are they like as a person

[03:59] what's their personality if we take the

[04:01] previous example the ocean assassin may

[04:04] have two different masks they put on

[04:06] depending on the day a happy gold lucky

[04:08] person when they're at their day job but

[04:10] a cold heartless yet badass executioner

[04:13] when it comes to doing their work at

[04:14] night and similarly to the previous

[04:16] Point how can we incorporate this into

[04:19] the design itself do we want to lean

[04:21] more into the J opposition or maybe the

[04:23] personality is more happy Surfer than

[04:25] ruthless assassin in which case we could

[04:27] design the majority share of their

[04:29] outfit to fit the happy surface side of

[04:31] them more there's a little bit of small

[04:33] but important Nuance of this that I'll

[04:35] touch on later but as you can see the

[04:37] back story helps bring these ideas

[04:39] together and build on top of each other

[04:41] therefore fostering a cohesive hole

[04:43] which basically means that a backstory

[04:45] acts like a tether connecting bits and

[04:47] pieces of the things you want your model

[04:48] to have and then tying it all together

[04:50] to make it all make sense I hope what I

[04:53] just said made sense now you might be

[04:56] thinking to yourself after listening to

[04:58] this be speak for the fast 5 minutes

[05:00] that you should definitely go and create

[05:02] a backstory for your character and if

[05:04] you do great but please hear me out on

[05:06] one more very important thing first one

[05:09] more thing please don't feel pressured

[05:11] to make a backstory if it's not

[05:13] something you want to do while it's

[05:15] certainly helps it's not the end all be

[05:17] all you can 100% still get as far as a

[05:20] vtuber without a back story in some

[05:23] cases even the vtubers who are the most

[05:25] into their characters eventually drift

[05:28] away from their own backstory over a

[05:30] long period of time that they're

[05:31] performing on this proverbial stage and

[05:33] this is the Nuance I was talking about

[05:35] earlier having a predefined personality

[05:38] as a result of creating a backstory is

[05:40] something that may Fade Away over time

[05:43] and there's absolutely nothing wrong

[05:44] with that that is the say there's

[05:46] absolutely nothing wrong about just

[05:48] being your own authentic self making

[05:50] content that you want to make playing

[05:52] games that you want to play and

[05:53] streaming because it's something that is

[05:55] genuinely fun to you in fact if nothing

[05:57] else take this one piece of advice from

[06:00] this video at the end of a man's

[06:01] rambling session if you still want to

[06:03] make a backstory feel free It's a

[06:05] Wonderful way to express yourself and it

[06:07] works wonders for designing a character

[06:10] not to mention it's super fun to work on

[06:12] and allows you so much creative work and

[06:14] freedom to take place especially when

[06:16] you start thinking about the cool lore

[06:18] and video and and all the cool fun

[06:21] things you could do with it but don't

[06:23] let it make you feel as if you're unable

[06:25] to be yourself because if you think

[06:28] about it you're already a deep and

[06:30] fleshed out character in your own right

[06:32] you've had your fair share of struggles

[06:33] that have changed you as a person for

[06:36] the good or the bad I have no doubt that

[06:38] you've likely had many different types

[06:40] of experiences in life now you can take

[06:42] those experiences as inspiration for

[06:43] your vtuber backstory but again it's not

[06:46] necessary if that's not the route you

[06:49] want to go down you know a character is

[06:50] Well written when they are relatable

[06:52] relatability simply put it's just a

[06:54] matter of Being Human and well unless

[06:57] you're secretly a robot or alien in the

[06:59] guys is watching this video we are all

[07:02] human we all have our own flaws

[07:04] shortcomings ups and downs and

[07:07] everything in between all that's to say

[07:09] have fun making your vtuber don't get

[07:11] too hung up on any one thing like a

[07:13] backstory and don't feel like you need

[07:15] to act like a different person to

[07:17] fulfill that backstory use it as a tool

[07:20] to help you but don't let it drive you

[07:23] enjoy the process let all that

[07:25] creativity out and don't be afraid to

[07:27] keep experimenting and trying out new

[07:29] things

[07:30] keep in mind that over time as you grow

[07:32] as a streamer vtuber and content creator

[07:34] things will change but don't be afraid

[07:36] of that simply because he had a

[07:38] backstory or the like embrace it and go

[07:40] with that flow because in a way that is

[07:42] also you growing as a person and most

[07:45] importantly remember that one of the

[07:47] best perks that being a vtuber allows

[07:49] you to have is ironically the freedom to
