[00:00] So, I saw Us session the other day and
[00:02] it genuinely scared the [ __ ] out of me
[00:04] as I'm sure it did for a lot of you cuz
[00:06] I've been seeing so many people talking
[00:08] about how scary that movie is even
[00:09] claiming it's the scariest movie they've
[00:11] ever seen. Now, I wouldn't call it the
[00:13] scariest movie that I've ever seen. Um,
[00:15] you know, I've seen a lot of good scary
[00:16] movies out there. There are a lot of
[00:18] horror movies out there and they're not
[00:20] all good. But in this video, I want to
[00:22] talk about ones that I watched that I
[00:25] actually found scary because I feel
[00:26] like, you know, when movies like Us
[00:29] session come out, a lot of people, you
[00:30] know, really want to get more into
[00:32] horror and I I really love horror and
[00:34] I'd love for more people to get into it,
[00:36] obviously, but I don't think all of the
[00:38] most popular horror movies out there,
[00:40] um, are actually genuinely scary. Um,
[00:43] they can have good jump scares and maybe
[00:45] a creepy monster and gore, but does that
[00:47] actually make something scary? I I I'm
[00:49] more into something that like sits with
[00:50] me. It sits with me, it gets under my
[00:52] skin, makes you feel uncomfortable, and
[00:55] keeps me up at night. Like genuinely,
[00:56] like I have friends that don't want to
[00:58] watch horror movies because, you know,
[01:00] they get scared by it, but I something
[01:01] about the feeling of laying in bed,
[01:04] looking over your shoulder, looking into
[01:05] the dark hallway is it's like I don't
[01:08] know what it is. I hate it, but I love
[01:09] it at the same time. I'm sure if you if
[01:10] you enjoy horror movies, you know
[01:12] exactly what that feeling is. So, in
[01:13] this video, I made a little short list
[01:15] of horror movies that I've watched that
[01:17] I actually find scary, ones that sat
[01:19] with me, and ones that I still think
[01:21] about today. And these aren't all like
[01:22] super niche picture or anything. I'm
[01:24] sure you've heard of or even watched a
[01:26] lot of these, but I just want to talk
[01:27] about them cuz they're some of my
[01:28] favorites and they're just the ones that
[01:31] really really got to me. So, let's get
[01:34] into the first one.
[01:38] It Follows is one of the first horror
[01:41] movies that I
[01:43] watched, honestly. I feel like as a kid,
[01:45] you know, I'd watch people talk about
[01:47] horror movies or watch clips here and
[01:49] there, but I feel like It Follows was
[01:51] one of the first ones that I really sat
[01:52] down and fully watched as I was getting
[01:54] like more into film. It's not the
[01:56] scariest movie on this list, but I think
[01:57] it just has such an amazing concept,
[02:00] amazing soundtrack,
[02:02] and it is scary. Like it it will make
[02:04] you um walk around looking over your
[02:07] shoulder. So, basically the movie is
[02:10] about an STD. And I know
[02:13] that sounds stupid, it sounds crazy, but
[02:15] that's what it is. Basically, if you if
[02:17] you have you heard of the snail meme,
[02:19] right? You know the snail meme of like
[02:21] I'll explain the snail meme if you've
[02:22] never heard of it. People ask this
[02:23] question a lot, like would you take a
[02:25] billion dollars,
[02:27] but there's like this snail that if it
[02:29] touches you it kills you, and it's like
[02:31] always following you, um and it can't be
[02:34] killed, and and it's always going to
[02:36] follow you, and if you get touched by it
[02:37] you die, right? And it's but it's a
[02:39] snail slow. So, a lot of people are
[02:40] like, "Oh, I'd move around. I'd avoid
[02:42] the snail." So, it's that's that's a
[02:44] joke, but like the It Follows is
[02:46] basically that same concept where
[02:49] there is like this It's called the
[02:50] entity. And this entity, we don't really
[02:52] know what it is. We don't know if it's
[02:53] alien or like paranormal. We don't
[02:55] really know exactly what it is, but it
[02:57] takes the form of like different human
[02:59] beings. Basically, someone is like
[03:01] cursed. Like someone might have the
[03:03] curse of the entity, which means that
[03:06] they are a target for the entity. Um
[03:08] which means the entity will walk slowly
[03:11] towards this person that cannot be
[03:12] killed, they don't make no facial
[03:14] reaction or emotion or anything like
[03:15] that. They just walk towards this person
[03:17] until they reach them and eventually
[03:19] kill them. Um there's no killing them.
[03:22] They're they're very slow, but they just
[03:23] keep walking, and they won't stop until
[03:26] they reach you. But the only way to get
[03:29] rid of this curse and pass it on
[03:31] somebody else is by sleeping with them,
[03:33] having sex with them. Um so, it it's
[03:37] like literally a play on like an STD,
[03:39] which I think is really interesting and
[03:41] and a really fun concept. So, basically,
[03:42] if you're somebody that has this curse,
[03:44] you'd have to sleep with somebody.
[03:46] Um and then it the the curse is passed
[03:48] on to them.
[03:49] >> It's somewhere walking straight for you.
[03:54] All you can do is pass it along to
[03:56] someone else.
[03:56] >> The thing is, if that person that has
[03:58] the curse gets killed, then it goes to
[04:01] the last person that had it. Now the
[04:02] entity is following you again. So, um
[04:05] this this this all leads to a lot of
[04:06] really really intense and scary scenes
[04:09] cuz like I said, the entity can take the
[04:11] form of anyone.
[04:12] So, you don't know a lot of time when
[04:14] you see someone walking in the
[04:15] background if that is Is that the entity
[04:18] or is that just some like old woman
[04:19] walking? Like you you don't know. Like
[04:20] they could be anywhere in this movie. It
[04:22] feels like it's like a Where's Waldo
[04:24] almost where you're trying to find out
[04:26] if these random people in the background
[04:27] are the the creature coming to kill the
[04:30] main character or just like random
[04:32] bystanders. Um and the filmmakers do
[04:34] some really really just like like
[04:36] creative shots this way. Just like frame
[04:39] There's a shot of her, the main
[04:41] character, sitting in school in a
[04:42] classroom and in the window you see this
[04:44] like woman slowly walking towards the
[04:47] window and like you don't even notice it
[04:49] at first. And then and then it doesn't
[04:50] cut, so you start looking around and you
[04:52] and you just see the person walking
[04:54] closer and closer and closer. It just
[04:56] gives It gives me chills thinking about
[04:57] it. It's It's such a awesome movie and
[04:59] it has one of
[05:01] the most like bloodcurdling like soul
[05:03] leaves my body jump scares I've ever
[05:05] seen. If you If you've watched the
[05:08] movie, you know exactly which one I'm
[05:09] talking about. I'll just I won't give it
[05:11] away. I'll just say tall man. But my
[05:13] god, I had that that scene completely
[05:16] just had me like
[05:18] like I was so scared when I saw that and
[05:20] the image of it still sits with me. And
[05:22] that's what I mean by a truly scary
[05:24] movie. I feel like there's it needs like
[05:27] a few images that you just you just will
[05:29] not get out of your head. It doesn't
[05:31] have to be like super disturbing or gory
[05:33] or anything like that. But just a really
[05:35] well-made horror scene that just never
[05:38] leaves you. So, I I highly recommend you
[05:40] check out
[05:41] check out It Follows. I think it's super
[05:43] original.
[05:44] Um like I said before, amazing
[05:45] soundtrack. I think it's just a really
[05:47] well-made film and they're making a
[05:48] sequel I I I believe called They Follow
[05:51] which I'm really excited about. So, go
[05:53] watch that so you're ready for the
[05:54] sequel. So, go check out It Follows and
[05:56] let's get into the next movie.
[06:01] The next film I want to discuss is a
[06:04] Korean film called The Wailing. Um The
[06:06] Wailing is something that like I never
[06:09] really heard about and I was just
[06:11] surfing on Netflix one night and saw it
[06:13] and I'm a I'm a fan of Korean cinema
[06:16] um and I clicked on it and my god is one
[06:19] of the scariest like 3 hours I've ever
[06:22] had. It's a pretty long movie um but it
[06:25] it flies by. It's I mean it's a bit of a
[06:26] slow burn
[06:28] but once you get going it's it's just a
[06:31] total ride. Basically, it's
[06:33] um it takes place in a small like rural
[06:36] Korean town in like the mountains which
[06:38] is an amazing setting. It's such a
[06:40] unique and awesome setting for a movie
[06:42] like this
[06:43] and
[06:44] uh follows a police officer a cop who
[06:47] has like a family in the town and like a
[06:49] bunch of the citizens in the town are
[06:52] going like kind of crazy. Like they're
[06:54] randomly they have no history of
[06:56] violence but they're randomly like
[06:58] murdering their own family members and
[07:01] then they look like super weird after
[07:04] like zombified. Like they I thought it
[07:06] was a zombie movie when I was watching
[07:07] it almost because I I didn't know going
[07:08] in what it was but
[07:10] they look like their skin is all rashy.
[07:12] They're like freaking out. Their bones
[07:14] are popping out. Like there's like
[07:16] there's a lot of gore in this movie.
[07:17] It's not like too much in like a
[07:19] Terrifier or anything like that but the
[07:21] movie feels more real than that. So,
[07:23] those scenes feel more real and more
[07:24] terrifying. And this is the thing is
[07:26] trying to describe this movie to you it
[07:27] just it's hard because it's such a
[07:29] amazing movie with so many plot plot
[07:31] plot twists and twists and turns. I
[07:33] think it's really fun to go in blind but
[07:36] so I'm not going to give away too many
[07:37] spoilers but like
[07:38] they're like the town's freaking out.
[07:40] They've never seen anything like this
[07:41] before. They start like getting
[07:43] suspicious of this one Japanese man cuz
[07:45] they're in a small town in Korea and I'm
[07:48] not like the most, you know, I'm just a
[07:50] white guy. I'm not like the most
[07:52] up-to-date on the whole like cultural
[07:56] like clash between Koreans and Japanese.
[07:58] But, when I was researching this movie
[07:59] after there was like they were talking
[08:01] about that there is a bit of like
[08:03] xenophobia or even like racism with like
[08:08] like presuppositions made for Korean
[08:10] people and Japanese and like vice versa
[08:12] because of history and stuff like that.
[08:15] Um, and this movie kind of like plays
[08:16] around with that idea because
[08:18] like there is this one Japanese elderly
[08:21] man that lives in the mountains of the
[08:22] town and all all the people start being
[08:25] super suspicious of him like saying that
[08:26] he's doing some sort of witchcraft or
[08:28] devilry and like it he does seem pretty
[08:31] sus in the movie. Like, he's doing some
[08:33] weird stuff. There's like weird stuff in
[08:35] his house like ritualistic stuff.
[08:37] But, like you don't know what's going
[08:39] on. You don't know if this guy is just
[08:40] like a he could just be a weirdo but not
[08:42] the villain and there's just a lot going
[08:44] on in this movie. Um, it has paranormal
[08:48] stuff. I don't want to say too much but
[08:51] it has like one of the best plot twists
[08:54] I've ever seen in my life. I never knew
[08:56] where this movie was going. I think I
[08:58] have it at one point and then it would
[08:59] completely change um, what I thought was
[09:02] happening. I think it's shot and acted
[09:04] beautifully. It's just like a
[09:05] masterpiece of a movie. Like, these are
[09:08] all movies I really enjoy and think are
[09:09] scarier on this list but I think The
[09:11] Wailing is like genuinely a masterpiece.
[09:13] Like, it's an amazing movie. So, even if
[09:15] you're not like someone who loves horror
[09:17] movies, I think this movie is just like
[09:19] definitely worth checking out as just a
[09:22] film. I think it's an amazingly made
[09:23] movie. I think it has one of the
[09:26] best endings I've ever seen. There's a
[09:29] reveal of something and like a certain
[09:31] kind of
[09:33] like
[09:34] take on
[09:36] like mythology. I'd say there's like
[09:38] there's a there's a certain take on the
[09:39] kind of a certain entity. And I think
[09:42] this movie does an amazing job making it
[09:43] feel real and terrifying. And like I
[09:45] think this movie just has such a it does
[09:46] such a good job of creating a sense of
[09:48] evil in this town. You really just feel
[09:51] this town has been corrupted by evil,
[09:54] like an evil spirit or something. And
[09:55] it's so heavy and weighing on the our
[09:57] characters. And just just watch it.
[09:59] Watch The Wailing. It's amazing.
[10:01] Um let's move on to our third movie.
[10:06] Next up, I'm going to talk about The
[10:08] Strangers, which I actually think is
[10:11] probably my least favorite movie on this
[10:13] list.
[10:14] But it might be the one that scared me
[10:15] the most or second most. I think there's
[10:17] one more that scared me more than The
[10:18] Strangers. But I I during this movie
[10:21] I felt like total
[10:23] just terror. I I I did not have fun
[10:25] watching this movie.
[10:27] Um I think I I'm like Letterboxd, I
[10:29] think I rated it the lowest. I think I
[10:30] had it at like a three or two and a
[10:31] half.
[10:32] Because I feel like it was just a bit
[10:34] too much. Basically, The Strangers
[10:37] is a home invasion kind of horror. All
[10:39] of these movies, I think, on this list
[10:41] have different kinds of horror, which I
[10:42] think is why it's a fun list to make.
[10:45] But The Strangers is it plays with the
[10:47] fear of strangers entering your home and
[10:51] and harming you. And I think that's just
[10:52] like a fear that all of us can can
[10:54] relate to.
[10:56] Um cuz we've all had those moments being
[10:58] home alone or it's just you and somebody
[11:00] else. And it's dark outside and you feel
[11:03] like you feel like someone's inside the
[11:05] house or someone's outside the house.
[11:06] You hear a knock at the door and you're
[11:08] scared what it is and don't want to open
[11:10] it and it cuz you're just so scared of
[11:12] someone entering your safe space. I
[11:14] think that's what makes home invasion so
[11:16] terrifying is
[11:17] um the thought of somebody like we are
[11:20] all so safe in our house.
[11:22] And the thought of somebody entering
[11:24] that um and and completely ripping us
[11:27] from our one safe spot on this earth is
[11:29] just terrifying. So, I talking way too
[11:31] much about what the themes are, the mood
[11:34] the plot of the movie is basically
[11:37] this couple, they went to a wedding for
[11:39] their friend, but they're so they're
[11:41] staying like a remote cabin. Um and
[11:43] their relationship isn't doing so hot, I
[11:45] don't think. They're kind of arguing and
[11:46] maybe thinking about like breaking up.
[11:48] And now they're in this cabin alone at
[11:50] night and
[11:51] they randomly get like a knock at the
[11:53] door and it's like this creepy girl like
[11:56] wearing like a mask and it's just super
[11:59] cryptic and they don't really say much
[12:01] and like oh my god, I'm getting chills
[12:02] thinking about it. It It's like
[12:05] they're basically just like getting
[12:06] harassed by these like three
[12:09] strangers.
[12:12] >> Say that again.
[12:13] >> Strangers like wearing these really
[12:16] creepy masks and
[12:18] it's like
[12:20] I love when horror I'm going to get into
[12:22] this more for another movie on this
[12:24] list, but I love when horror
[12:27] just can be subtle and doesn't like sh-
[12:30] spam like what the they're trying to
[12:33] scare you with at the forefront of the
[12:34] screen. I love when something just can
[12:37] happen in the background and this movie
[12:39] does that so well where you don't even
[12:41] notice it maybe on your first watch. I
[12:43] think there was things I didn't notice
[12:44] until later on. We're basically like
[12:47] the like these you see things like you
[12:49] see that people have gotten into the
[12:51] house and now our characters don't know
[12:53] it and we're the fact that it's
[12:56] something that's like not shown to us
[12:57] like immediately if like if you just saw
[12:59] it in the background, your heart would
[13:01] sink and you would just feel your like
[13:03] you would feel just goosebumps
[13:05] everywhere. I can't think I'm thinking
[13:06] about it right now. There's a moment
[13:08] where you don't even it's not like a
[13:10] spoiler cuz it's it's not even it's just
[13:12] like a thing where like the characters
[13:14] are are the they've locked the doors and
[13:16] stuff, but in the background you can see
[13:17] like maybe the back door wasn't locked
[13:19] and you see someone standing in the back
[13:21] and it's just that that is such
[13:24] good horror to me. Um and it's something
[13:26] that
[13:28] it it cuz it makes you think. Just you I
[13:30] finished the movie and then I'm walking
[13:31] around my own house and I'm just like, I
[13:33] want to look around everywhere because
[13:34] what if I'm not facing the direction I
[13:36] should be and there's an intruder behind
[13:38] me or something like that. I think it is
[13:39] kind of inspired by a true story as
[13:41] well. I don't know how much that is
[13:43] actually, you know, true when it comes
[13:45] to horror movies like Conjuring. Like it
[13:47] was a true story, but it's like, is it?
[13:48] I don't know. So,
[13:50] definitely check out The Strangers if
[13:51] you want some home invasion horror. I
[13:53] think home invasion horror is terrifying
[13:55] cuz it feels so real. There's nothing
[13:57] supernatural about this one. It's just a
[13:59] really really well-crafted horror movie
[14:02] with really great um scares. And to be
[14:04] specific, I think they remade this movie
[14:06] and it was called this like they split
[14:07] it up into multiple parts like
[14:10] I think it's called The Stranger Chapter
[14:11] 1, The Strangers Chapter Chapter 2. It
[14:13] had the girl from Riverdale or whatever.
[14:15] Do not watch those ones. I've heard
[14:17] those ones are terrible and they're just
[14:19] like not scary at all.
[14:22] Go watch the original one. I'll check
[14:24] the Check what year it's it's made just
[14:26] to make sure you watch the right one.
[14:27] Okay, I just checked. Came out in 2008.
[14:29] So, watch The Strangers from 2008.
[14:32] It will leave you paranoid and
[14:36] checking your doors for nights to come.
[14:38] Let's move on to the next movie.
[14:43] The next movie that I want to talk about
[14:45] is Sinister. Now, Sinister is definitely
[14:47] one of the most popular ones on this
[14:48] list. You've If you're into horror,
[14:50] you've probably watched Sinister or at
[14:52] least have heard of it. It stars Ethan
[14:54] Hawke and it is
[14:57] um it's a really really good horror
[14:59] movie. I think it's like one I would
[15:00] recommend to a lot of like horror
[15:02] beginners or people that are like diving
[15:05] more into horror movies. Like if you
[15:06] watch The Conjuring movies, I think this
[15:07] is like the next step from that. I
[15:09] really enjoyed The Conjuring movies,
[15:11] but I think Sinister is a bit more scary
[15:14] than those movies
[15:16] cuz it feels a bit more like real and
[15:17] dark. Sinister is basically Ethan Hawke
[15:19] who is like this crime like he's a
[15:22] writer and he writes these books where
[15:24] he is trying to like solve cases that
[15:27] were never solved by the police. So,
[15:30] like families that were killed or stuff
[15:32] like that that that that cases that went
[15:34] cold, he kind of picks them back up and
[15:37] puts clues together um and has actually
[15:40] had some success in the past helping
[15:41] like cases be solved. So, he's like a
[15:43] popular writer, but he hasn't had a hit
[15:45] in a long time and he's getting
[15:47] desperate cuz his family needs money.
[15:49] All right, two kids and a wife. And so,
[15:52] they move into this small town and they
[15:54] move into a new house um and he's good
[15:56] he's writing a new book on on this
[15:58] family that was killed.
[16:00] But, what he doesn't tell his wife or
[16:02] his kids is that the house that they're
[16:04] moving into is the house that this
[16:07] family was killed. The movie starts with
[16:08] the family being killed and it was
[16:10] actually like a group suicide that the
[16:12] family did, but one of the children went
[16:15] missing.
[16:16] There was like a family with three kids
[16:18] and one of the kids went missing and the
[16:20] rest of the family like hung themselves
[16:21] from a tree and it's it's just it's
[16:23] really eerie.
[16:24] Um so, he's in this house that like this
[16:28] horrific tragedy happened in and he's
[16:31] trying to keep that secret from his
[16:32] wife. Um and basically he he's writing
[16:36] his book and stuff and then he finds in
[16:38] the attic of this house he finds a box
[16:40] of like um videotapes, like uh reels,
[16:44] like reels like like film reels.
[16:46] Um and he puts the the film reels in and
[16:49] watches it on the projector and they're
[16:52] all like
[16:54] um
[16:55] killer like the the videos that the
[16:56] killer recorded. Um a killer recorded.
[17:01] Um and he's like stalking and these
[17:03] these videos are like the some of the
[17:05] scariest like most [ __ ] up things
[17:07] you'll watch in a horror movie. It's
[17:08] like a like the killer's POV stalking a
[17:11] family
[17:13] um and and like singing with it's like
[17:15] weird it's like the the the design of
[17:17] these horror tapes, they feel real, they
[17:18] feel like something you'd find on the
[17:19] dark web. Um they don't show you
[17:21] anything like too graphic or too insane
[17:24] or anything like that, but they're just
[17:24] like truly, truly disturbing. Um and it
[17:28] makes you feel super uncomfortable. And
[17:29] as Ethan Hawke is like watching this,
[17:31] he's going deeper and deeper. And like
[17:33] and like what's amazing is this movie
[17:34] doesn't like they don't show you all
[17:36] these
[17:37] recordings at once. You you get them
[17:39] sprinkled throughout the movie because
[17:41] as he watches these tapes, like weird
[17:43] stuff happens. Like these tapes feel
[17:46] like they're cursed or have like the
[17:48] first of all how did that tape had that
[17:50] box get there? Um
[17:52] and Insidious I think is just a
[17:54] >> [music]
[17:54] >> it's a tremendous movie. Again, it has
[17:56] one of the
[17:58] best jump scares I've ever seen. There
[18:01] are multiple good jump scares in this
[18:02] movie, but I think this there's one
[18:04] specifically that you just comes out of
[18:05] nowhere and it's amazing. Definitely
[18:07] check out Sinister. Same director as
[18:09] like Doctor Strange and the Black Phone.
[18:11] So he's worked with Ethan Hawke again.
[18:13] [music] And he just makes really good
[18:14] horror movies. Um
[18:16] check it out.
[18:21] The next movie that I want to discuss is
[18:23] The Descent. The Descent might be one of
[18:25] the more like unpopular ones on this
[18:26] list. Um but it's it's a really, really
[18:30] scary movie that I found recently and
[18:32] watched. It's basically about
[18:35] um these group of women that are friends
[18:38] and um the one the main character had a
[18:41] forget your fam- really bad family
[18:42] tragedy happen um at the beginning of
[18:44] the movie. Um and now she's agreed to go
[18:48] on this like the at the beginning of the
[18:49] movie there there were they were tie-
[18:51] they they were river rafting and there
[18:53] was an accident after that. Um so
[18:55] they're like they're they're all
[18:56] daredevils, they're all adventurers, and
[18:58] and they're all adrenaline junkies. So
[19:00] they decide to go on this girls' trip to
[19:02] get her mind off the tragedy and go cave
[19:06] diving in this in this like unexplored
[19:08] cave. That already is something that I
[19:11] think a lot of us fear. Caves are super
[19:13] claustrophobic. We know I don't
[19:15] understand why people decide to just
[19:18] jump into
[19:20] you know, these tight unexplored caves.
[19:22] Like you don't need that's totally
[19:23] optional. Totally optional. You don't
[19:24] need to do that, but they still decide
[19:25] to do that. Um
[19:27] and that's what these girls do. They go
[19:29] on you know, they go on
[19:31] with cables down into this cave and
[19:33] explore it. And
[19:35] there's this this this really just like
[19:37] uneasy feeling the entire time. Like
[19:40] maybe they're being watched or something
[19:41] like that, but they they're just
[19:43] a lot of really terrifying moments of
[19:46] near death and stuff like that. And I
[19:48] feel like nothing
[19:51] that like supernatural or paranormal
[19:53] happens for majority of this movie.
[19:56] But it's still just really really
[19:57] terrifying. As the movie goes on
[20:00] there is supernatural like elements
[20:04] introduced. And when that is introduced,
[20:06] holy [ __ ]
[20:08] It is one of the It is one of the
[20:09] strongest jump scares I've ever seen cuz
[20:11] this comes so out of nowhere. So I'm not
[20:12] going to tell you anything about it. But
[20:14] The Descent
[20:15] has more than
[20:17] it is more than it seems. I love when
[20:19] movies show restraint and don't um
[20:23] like reveal all its cards right at the
[20:26] beginning. I I I really respect when
[20:28] movies like The Descent have restraint
[20:30] to not reveal
[20:31] all their cards right at the beginning.
[20:34] And and just like let and just let the
[20:35] movie just let the movie cook. Let the
[20:37] movie cook and sit there and and go
[20:39] through it. And I'd love to hear your
[20:41] thoughts and in the comments if you've
[20:43] seen the movie you know exactly what I'm
[20:45] talking about. Um and you'll you'll know
[20:48] the jump scare. You'll know the jump
[20:49] scare. So if you go watch it, come back
[20:51] and let me know what you think. Check
[20:53] out The Descent cuz it'll scare you.
[20:55] Let's go on to the next movie.
[21:00] Next up is the scariest movie that I've
[21:03] ever watched. Um and that is Hereditary.
[21:07] Now, Hereditary is very popular. You've
[21:09] probably watched it if you like horror
[21:11] movies, you've definitely heard about
[21:12] it. It is truly, truly scary. When Us
[21:17] came out, a lot of people were talking
[21:19] about how they compared it to like
[21:22] Hereditary. Like, I feel like Hereditary
[21:24] set the standard for like what a
[21:26] terrifying modern horror movie is. And
[21:29] people It's like It's like that every
[21:30] time there's a new like movie like Us or
[21:33] like Smile or whatever, I don't know.
[21:35] When it's like a big popular horror
[21:36] movie, I feel like people are like, "Oh,
[21:38] like they're comparing it to
[21:39] Hereditary." Cuz that's how scary
[21:41] Hereditary is. Now, Us did not surpass
[21:44] Hereditary for me. I think Hereditary is
[21:45] a better movie. I think it is a scarier
[21:48] movie for sure.
[21:49] Um, this movie is I don't even know how
[21:52] to describe it. It's Ari Aster, who also
[21:55] directed Midsommar, which is also a
[21:57] really good horror movie, but not as
[21:59] good as Hereditary. No No No way near as
[22:01] good as Hereditary in my opinion. And
[22:02] it's a very different kind of horror.
[22:04] Hereditary tackles grief and loss in
[22:07] such a like sad and terrifying way. Um,
[22:12] Midsommar does something similar
[22:13] tackling grief. But, my god, Hereditary
[22:17] has It's It's a truly disturbing movie.
[22:19] We're talking about like This isn't a
[22:22] movie that I would recommend to people
[22:24] that are like just getting into horror.
[22:26] I think there are actually like really
[22:27] depressing
[22:28] >> [music]
[22:28] >> and disturbing themes in this movie. So,
[22:30] you have to be really ready ready for
[22:31] that. This isn't like any of the other
[22:33] movies that I've talked about. I feel
[22:34] like the other movies that I've talked
[22:35] about on this list,
[22:37] besides maybe The Strangers,
[22:39] are all like fun to watch even though
[22:41] they're so scary. They are very scary,
[22:43] but they're fun to watch. You know what
[22:44] I mean? There's like Um, it they almost
[22:47] kind of more feel like a haunted house.
[22:49] Like, they're like, "Oh my god." Like,
[22:50] when you get scared in a haunted house,
[22:51] it's it's really, really scary, but
[22:53] like, you know you have you you know
[22:55] you're there having a fun time. You know
[22:56] what I mean? But, like, Hereditary isn't
[22:59] a fun time. It is not a fun time.
[23:01] Hereditary is terrifying and it has
[23:05] imagery that has sat with me since that
[23:07] I will never forget. Um Hereditary is
[23:10] about a family um that basically has
[23:14] their grandmother pass away.
[23:16] Um and we slowly learn that the
[23:19] grandmother was involved in some weird
[23:22] like cultish things and this is now
[23:27] coming back to bite her family. There's
[23:32] um stuff that happens with the father,
[23:35] there's stuff that happens with the
[23:36] mother, there's stuff that happens with
[23:37] the the son and the daughter that's like
[23:39] truly disturbing. Um
[23:42] it all comes together and in the last 30
[23:46] minutes
[23:47] I have never been more scared in my
[23:49] entire life. Like truly, I am telling
[23:51] you right now the last 30 I don't want
[23:52] to hype this movie up too much because I
[23:53] feel like
[23:54] uh
[23:55] I feel like people like
[23:57] because it's so popular and so many
[23:59] people have said what I'm saying about
[24:00] how scary it is, I feel like people go
[24:01] in with like the mindset of like oh I'm
[24:04] not going to get scared. You know, I'm
[24:06] going I'm going to be like I'm alpha,
[24:07] I'm not going to be scared of this. I've
[24:08] seen so many comments saying Hereditary
[24:09] is not even scary, like what are you
[24:10] talking about? Like no, it is a
[24:12] terrifying movie.
[24:14] It is so well made. If you weren't
[24:15] scared of it, I actually don't
[24:16] understand how. And I feel like the
[24:18] thing with horror you got to really like
[24:21] be in the right mindset for things. I
[24:23] feel like you could watch like an action
[24:25] movie and it's like no matter if you're
[24:28] like
[24:29] with your friends or on your own, I feel
[24:31] like you can you still like get the same
[24:33] kind of stuff out of it. Like you can
[24:34] really respect how cool something is, a
[24:36] stunt, an explosion,
[24:38] the choreography hits the same. But like
[24:41] I feel like horror is so atmospheric and
[24:43] it so much depends on your mindset and
[24:45] your your own like atmosphere. Like when
[24:48] I watched Obsessed, I feel like part of
[24:49] the reason I didn't find it as scary as
[24:50] other people was because there was
[24:51] people
[24:53] in the theater talking behind me like a
[24:55] lot. Like anytime something scary was
[24:57] happening, they're like oh [ __ ] Oh,
[24:58] fuck." And I'm like, I get that they're
[24:59] having a good time, but like for me,
[25:01] that takes me out of the movie. It makes
[25:03] me feel less scared. If I would have
[25:04] watched Obsession alone on my laptop, it
[25:07] probably would be one of the scariest
[25:09] movies I've ever seen.
[25:10] Um
[25:11] but like, man, Hereditary I did watch
[25:13] just alone with my girlfriend and
[25:15] it it really scared me. So,
[25:17] I think if if you're someone that didn't
[25:18] think it was that scary, maybe try
[25:20] giving it another shot and watching it
[25:21] alone or something instead of like
[25:23] drinking with your friends and watching
[25:24] it and talking the whole time and then
[25:26] saying it's not that scary. Cuz I feel
[25:27] like that's a lot of people's
[25:28] experiences with certain horror movies.
[25:30] They don't put themselves in the right
[25:32] atmosphere to be scared. Um
[25:34] but Hereditary is it's not just, you
[25:37] know, like it's not like brutal in like
[25:40] terrifying for the sake of it. I think
[25:42] it has things to say. That's why I think
[25:43] it's a good movie. It it's tackling
[25:45] grief in a really really like
[25:47] interesting and depressing way.
[25:49] Um it has I think Toni Collette, who
[25:51] plays the mother, is it's one of the
[25:54] best performances I've ever seen in a
[25:55] movie ever. I think she probably should
[25:57] have won an Oscar for it. I think it is
[25:59] it she's
[26:00] who shows her trauma and her fear
[26:03] and everything else she does in that
[26:05] movie, she does it so well. I I think
[26:08] it's it is one of the best performances
[26:09] I've ever seen from an actress or an
[26:11] actor.
[26:12] Um and like I said, the last 30 minutes
[26:14] of Hereditary, I could I just think of
[26:16] it and I instantly get shivers. I
[26:17] instantly look at the corner of my wall
[26:19] thinking I'm going to see something. And
[26:20] what I talked about earlier um with the
[26:22] strangers about movies that have things
[26:25] going on in the background that le it
[26:27] leaves it leaves up to the audience to
[26:29] notice, this is the prime example of
[26:32] that for me. There is a scene in this
[26:34] movie
[26:35] where
[26:37] it it holds a shot at like a bed where
[26:39] someone wakes up and it's holding a shot
[26:42] and the shot just holds and there's no
[26:44] music and there's like no dialogue. It's
[26:46] very quiet. It's a son waking up asking
[26:48] where his family is. And
[26:50] it it holds on that shot for so long and
[26:52] you're just like, "Okay, like what's
[26:53] going on?" And then you start looking
[26:54] around like, "What is that? What the
[26:56] [ __ ] is that?" It's like
[26:57] And then and then it moves and it's like
[27:00] it's one of the scariest things I've
[27:01] ever seen in my life. It still sits with
[27:03] me so much and man, that ending and
[27:05] everything was just incredibly scary.
[27:07] And there was a interesting interview
[27:10] with Curry Parker, the director of
[27:12] Obsession, talking about like the modern
[27:14] jump scare.
[27:16] Um cuz he's talking about how like he
[27:18] loves in movies and he and he puts in
[27:20] his own movies, his horror movies, like
[27:22] he wants to he loves jump scares that
[27:24] aren't like loud noise and like someone
[27:28] jumping and screaming and stuff like
[27:29] that. But he loves jump scares that is
[27:31] like something uncanny, something that
[27:33] makes the audi- like the audience feel
[27:34] uncomfortable, like the what like saying
[27:37] like, "What what the [ __ ] is that? What
[27:38] is that?" Some- like a human shouldn't
[27:40] move like that. Someone shouldn't smile
[27:43] like that or make a face like that or or
[27:45] stand like that. I think and it's like a
[27:47] a quick like jarring shot of that. It
[27:49] doesn't need a giant loud sound or
[27:50] anything like that. Just seeing it, I
[27:52] think that is such an effective way of
[27:54] scaring someone. Like just having an
[27:57] uncanny moment. And this movie does that
[28:00] so well, having people stand where they
[28:03] shouldn't be, having someone's standing
[28:06] in the in the dark corner of a room and
[28:08] you can't just make out what it is and
[28:09] then by the time you do, they're gone.
[28:11] It's just like Stuff like that scares me
[28:13] so much. Hereditary is truly truly a
[28:16] horror movie that sits with me. It
[28:18] scares me every scene.
[28:20] Um and I want some of the top of it, but
[28:22] I also don't because that means I'll
[28:23] have something new to think about and be
[28:25] scared about when I go to sleep at
[28:26] night. So watch your Hereditary at your
[28:29] own risk. If you have seen it, let me
[28:30] know what you think about it cuz I I I
[28:33] really do love talking about that movie.
[28:35] Um but now we're going to move on to the
[28:36] final movie of this list.
[28:42] I saw the TV glow is
[28:45] I watched it pretty recently and
[28:48] it is one of my favorite movies of all
[28:50] time. I think all out of this entire
[28:53] list, I saw A Dark TV Glow is my
[28:55] favorite movie. That it's not the movie
[28:57] that scared me the most, but it is the
[28:59] one that I feel like affected me the
[29:01] most. And out of all the horror movies
[29:04] on this list, this one has a very
[29:06] different type of horror. This isn't the
[29:08] type of horror that like
[29:10] makes you jump in your seat or makes you
[29:14] like scream or anything like that. But
[29:15] it really it gets under your skin
[29:18] in an existential way. Existential
[29:20] horror
[29:21] is something that I it really affects
[29:25] me.
[29:26] Um I've had existential crises before
[29:28] thinking about like my place in the
[29:30] world, what what happens when we die,
[29:32] all this kind of stuff. And and like
[29:35] what is what is the purpose of life?
[29:37] Like does more more mortality and stuff
[29:39] like that. Uh I feel like this movie
[29:41] just explores themes like that like
[29:44] really really well. Um and it also is an
[29:49] LGBTQ movie that like really
[29:53] I feel like made me empathize with
[29:56] like the trans experience more than like
[29:58] I ever ever understood. Th- there's not
[30:01] like in your face about it or anything
[30:02] like that. It's not even something that
[30:04] was like totally clear to me until after
[30:06] I finished the movie.
[30:07] But like once I did I was just like I
[30:08] felt like heartbroken. And I I think
[30:10] it's a really important movie to watch
[30:13] to like understand that like what like
[30:16] the fear in like in in people and um
[30:18] about that kind of stuff. And
[30:20] I feel like
[30:22] it's hard for me to understand. I'm not
[30:23] the best person to talk about that kind
[30:24] of stuff. I just feel like when you
[30:26] watch the movie hopefully you understand
[30:27] that and maybe read up about read up on
[30:29] it. But like the idea of like it really
[30:33] made me think about if someone was trans
[30:35] or wanted to like, you know, like change
[30:38] um
[30:39] to like the other gender like what like
[30:43] it would be like to not act on that in a
[30:45] way, you know what I mean? Like living
[30:47] your entire life like feeling like you
[30:49] should be somebody else, but you only
[30:51] don't do it because of society and
[30:54] societal pressures or your family
[30:56] pressures and stuff like that. And then
[30:57] you're like
[30:58] old on your deathbed and then you think
[31:00] about it and you're like
[31:02] and then you're like, "Oh my god, it's
[31:03] too late. Like it's too late." Like that
[31:05] that that thought, it's like it's too
[31:07] late now. I can't do it. I wasted my
[31:09] entire life because I cared about what
[31:11] other people thought. And I can't take
[31:13] that back. Like time is gone. Time is
[31:15] passed. I cannot take that back.
[31:17] Um
[31:18] that is like and I could I could have
[31:19] been happy. I could have been this, but
[31:20] instead of live my life not fulfilling
[31:22] my true self.
[31:24] I think that idea
[31:27] I saw that TV glow
[31:29] just
[31:30] covers in such a bleak way. And it
[31:33] really really made me just feel sad and
[31:36] like I felt it like in here. It's this
[31:39] is like one of my favorite movies in a
[31:40] way that like it covers it has a lot of
[31:43] things. It has it has amazing themes
[31:45] about like identity and time and being
[31:49] yourself.
[31:50] Um
[31:51] and
[31:52] and on like death and stuff like that.
[31:54] It has amazing themes about um it has
[31:56] like it has like liminal space and like
[31:58] nostalgia. Like it it captures like my
[32:01] nostalgia in a way that has like it has
[32:04] like very like early 2000s vibes. I
[32:06] think that's when it takes place.
[32:08] Um and like there's it's like honestly I
[32:10] think it almost has better liminal space
[32:12] than the actual Backrooms movie. I think
[32:13] there's like there's a lot of shots of
[32:15] like elementary school gymnasiums and
[32:17] they're underneath like the big um like
[32:20] like parachute, you know, they used to
[32:21] play games with. And like and the like
[32:25] being in ball pits in an arcade or at a
[32:27] movie theater. Like it just like it just
[32:29] captures or like suburbia and stuff as a
[32:31] child. Like it just captures those vibes
[32:34] so well
[32:35] um and puts them into like a horror
[32:37] liminal space that I think
[32:41] it just feels it feels nostalgic, sad,
[32:44] depressing all at once. And it also is
[32:47] topped with
[32:48] one of my favorite soundtracks I've ever
[32:50] heard in a film. It has all these
[32:51] original score, all these the score is
[32:54] actually by Alex G, the the the artist.
[32:57] And he does an amazing score, but the
[32:58] actual soundtrack with all the songs
[33:02] it is incredible. I've been listening to
[33:04] those songs a lot over since I watched
[33:06] the movie.
[33:07] And they just make me they just make me
[33:09] so sad when I listen to them. So,
[33:11] if you are into horror that might leave
[33:14] you feeling a bit depressed, I think I I
[33:16] saw a TV show is right up your alley.
[33:19] But it's it's it's like it's truly a
[33:22] scary movie in the sense of like what
[33:26] we see our characters go through and
[33:28] what their fate is, you know what I
[33:29] mean? And I think it I think it's a
[33:31] wake-up call to a lot of people about
[33:34] not wasting your life and stuff like
[33:35] that. So, I think it's a really
[33:36] important movie. I think it's a
[33:37] beautiful movie, amazing soundtrack,
[33:39] so so well made, and just scary on a
[33:42] different level that the other ones
[33:44] aren't, you know what I mean?
[33:45] So, that's my list. I I I hope you
[33:49] enjoyed hearing me just like kind of
[33:50] ramble. This isn't like a video that I
[33:52] wrote a huge script or anything like
[33:54] that, as you can probably tell. I kind
[33:55] of just rambling. But I really really
[33:57] love horror.
[33:59] I've been playing a lot of horror games
[34:00] recently, and I've been just really
[34:02] watching horror movies
[34:03] a lot. And because Obsession came out
[34:06] and it's everyone's talking about the
[34:08] really scary movie of Obsession, I
[34:09] thought it'd be a good time to make this
[34:11] video.
[34:12] So, if you're out there and you're
[34:14] trying to get into horror movies, I
[34:15] think these are ones that will scare
[34:17] you. Because I think there's a lot of
[34:18] movies out there that are popular that
[34:20] aren't actually that scary and
[34:22] people hype up to be like super scary
[34:24] movies. To me, these are ones that
[34:26] actually scared me. They actually got me
[34:27] jump scares, left me feeling dread or
[34:30] anxiety or anything like that. If you
[34:32] enjoy definitely being scared, check
[34:34] these movies out. I think they're worth
[34:36] your time. I think they're truly scary.
[34:38] Um and I'd love to hear your thoughts on
[34:40] them in the comments below. So, if you
[34:42] enjoyed this video, let me know. I'd be
[34:43] down to do other videos like this for
[34:45] different topics, just rambling and
[34:47] stuff like that. Um but thank you for
[34:49] watching. Again, comment down below uh
[34:51] if if you also if you have
[34:52] recommendations for me,
[34:54] please comment them cuz I want more
[34:56] movies that I find scary. I want to
[34:58] watch more horror movies. So, if I
[34:59] didn't mention something, um these
[35:01] aren't the only horror movies I've
[35:02] watched. I just picked a few to talk
[35:04] about. So, maybe I'll do a part two one
[35:05] day. But, comment movies uh
[35:07] recommendations cuz I'd love to watch
[35:08] more. So, thank you for watching and I
[35:11] will see you guys in the next one.
