7:35[00:00] so my last video I talked about five
[00:01] tips to getting into reading novels and
[00:03] in this video we're going to be talking
[00:04] about five tips to help you hopefully
[00:07] get into reading manga for me personally
[00:10] I've been reading books my entire life
[00:13] and have always been a very very Avid
[00:16] Reader but only within the last couple
[00:17] of years have I fallen in love with the
[00:21] medium of manga as well and now I'm an
[00:23] active reader of both this is all still
[00:25] relatively new to me and I still have a
[00:27] lot to learn but I've also been getting
[00:29] a lot of comments of people who have
[00:31] been following me for a while because of
[00:32] books and because I'm now getting into
[00:35] manga they are trying to get into manga
[00:37] as well so thought it might be helpful
[00:39] to make a video if you are trying to dip
[00:42] your toes into the genre hopefully these
[00:44] are a couple of things that might help
[00:45] you get there a little bit easier first
[00:48] and foremost is to explore what's out
[00:50] there the primary biggest names in manga
[00:54] stuff like one piece Naruto Dragon Ball
[00:58] Attack on Titan Hunter I you know the
[01:01] big names that you probably hear a lot
[01:03] there's so much variety out there so if
[01:06] one of those big names doesn't appeal to
[01:08] you maybe look a little bit farther
[01:10] because manga has a vast variety of
[01:15] options interested in something that's
[01:17] light-hearted fun Slice of Life but
[01:20] still very active and keeps the plot
[01:22] moving at a great Pace try spy family it
[01:25] has been such a surprise and I
[01:28] absolutely adore it big fan of series
[01:30] and authors like Joe Abercrombie Malazan
[01:33] Song of Ice and Fire stuff that really
[01:35] delves into the complexity of violence
[01:37] and War and human emotion uh try Finland
[01:41] Saga or berserk you love absurdist
[01:43] fiction like Hitchhiker's Guide to the
[01:45] Galaxy or the Discworld series
[01:47] maybe try my favorite one piece or maybe
[01:49] you love horror and you want to explore
[01:51] a visual component alongside your
[01:53] reading check out junji Ito all of his
[01:56] stories are self-contained and good or
[02:00] if you want something a little bit
[02:01] darker but not quite that dark Death
[02:03] Note is a really fun series or maybe if
[02:06] you're into literary fiction and romance
[02:08] and exploring trauma and really heavy
[02:10] topics you have stuff like a silent
[02:12] voice and fruits basket even if you're
[02:14] into cooking and sports and rock
[02:16] climbing you name it there are series
[02:18] that are dedicated to these things I
[02:21] mean it gets real Niche a lot of manga
[02:23] series are really big and really long
[02:25] and the size of the series might be
[02:27] intimidating but there are so many
[02:29] series that are very short that run only
[02:32] 12 or 24 volumes and getting through a
[02:36] volume is very fast a lot a lot faster
[02:38] than reading a traditional novel my next
[02:40] tip is to read digitally I promise you I
[02:44] understand the compulsion to get get
[02:48] everything that you want to read
[02:49] physically and read it with your hands I
[02:51] love that if that's something that
[02:52] you're into too I
[02:55] hard relate but once I bought this which
[03:00] you can use your computer that you
[03:02] already own you can use devices that you
[03:04] already own but once I got a device that
[03:07] I was dedicated to reading manga oh my
[03:10] goodness Game Changer why one having a
[03:14] big screen to be able to read on is
[03:16] great because then you really get to
[03:18] appreciate the artwork and you don't
[03:20] have to like if you're reading on your
[03:21] phone always zooming in on stuff it
[03:24] ain't good but two of the cost because
[03:25] you get through a volume of manga so
[03:28] fast buying physically everything that
[03:31] you read it adds up so fast and that
[03:35] cost can be a huge deterrent plus I
[03:38] strongly believe in allowing yourself to
[03:40] quit series you don't like because there
[03:43] are so many different types of stories
[03:44] out there and because in the beginning
[03:46] you'll probably be experimenting a lot
[03:49] on figuring out what kind of stories you
[03:52] want to read in this medium you have to
[03:54] be allowed to quit on stuff that's not
[03:57] working and if you're physically buying
[03:58] everything oh it just feels like a waste
[04:01] of money
[04:02] when a series doesn't work out for you
[04:04] and you don't finish it and then you
[04:05] look at that stack of manga that you
[04:07] spent a hundred dollars on
[04:10] it's just reading digitally is great so
[04:12] there's apps like Shonen jump or
[04:13] bookwalker that allow you to have a two
[04:16] dollar monthly subscription or to
[04:19] purchase the volume at a heavily
[04:21] discounted price digitally and it makes
[04:25] it a lot less of a extreme commitment to
[04:29] start a series and if you're reading a
[04:31] long form series like one piece just
[04:33] having a two dollar a month subscription
[04:35] to Shonen jump and being able to read
[04:38] the entire series that way oh it's
[04:40] amazing my next tip is if you're a
[04:43] complete and total newbie to this take
[04:45] some time to understand the medium more
[04:47] than likely you have read some sort of
[04:50] comic in your life or at the very least
[04:53] Calvin and Hobbs or even if you haven't
[04:55] done that why
[04:57] why even if you haven't done that you've
[05:00] probably read the Sunday Funnies or
[05:02] something like that something so you
[05:04] probably understand the way this format
[05:06] works
[05:08] you're just reading it you know from
[05:10] right to left instead of left to right
[05:12] now and from Back to Front instead of
[05:14] front to back so there's a little bit of
[05:15] adjustment that needs happening there as
[05:18] far as which direction you read in but
[05:20] you've probably experienced comics in
[05:23] some form or another in your lifetime
[05:25] but if you're a total noob if you
[05:26] haven't experienced comments heart
[05:28] Comics hardly at all and the idea of
[05:32] changing the direction that you read in
[05:34] is very intimidating to you I'm gonna
[05:36] link a video I found where somebody
[05:37] breaks it down very clearly and very
[05:41] easy to understand which panels to read
[05:44] first how to move across the page how to
[05:47] understand the paneling if you're
[05:49] completely intimidated taking the time
[05:51] to understand the formatting so that you
[05:54] can just focus on enjoying the story and
[05:56] being engaged is a great plan next tip
[05:59] is to pick something that's praised for
[06:01] having a really loyal adaptation a
[06:04] couple examples are Full Metal Alchemist
[06:06] Vinland Saga free Fruits Basket you
[06:09] could probably find a good list just
[06:11] through Google the reason I recommend
[06:13] this is because I think that it's
[06:14] totally understandable to be intimidated
[06:17] by experiencing an entire new medium
[06:20] that requires a new reading style for
[06:23] your brain when I first started reading
[06:25] one piece there were things that I was
[06:26] missing and misunderstanding because it
[06:28] was a completely new experience for me
[06:31] as a reader and it just took me time to
[06:34] really click with it I still loved the
[06:37] story but it is a challenge for your
[06:40] brain to reformat the way you read and
[06:43] experience stories not to mention the
[06:45] fact that manga do they do use a
[06:48] different storytelling method and a
[06:49] different story structure a lot of times
[06:52] so if you're just totally unfamiliar
[06:54] with the medium I totally understand
[06:56] being intimidated and afraid that you're
[06:58] gonna miss stuff so being able to read
[07:00] volumes and then watch the series side
[07:03] by side is really helpful because you're
[07:05] experiencing the story twice one way
[07:07] that you experience Transit through the
[07:08] adaptation is probably more familiar to
[07:10] you even if you're not accustomed to
[07:12] anime you understand how shows and
[07:14] movies work and I found that a lot of
[07:16] times anime are a lot more on the nose
[07:19] than manga are they'll either add extra
[07:21] scenes to further explore something or
[07:24] just kind of outright say something
[07:25] that's more hinted at in the manga so if
[07:28] you're afraid of missing something that
[07:29] could be a big asset experiencing the
[07:31] anime along with the manga will
[07:33] definitely help with the final tip in
[07:35] the video and the final tip in this
[07:36] video is going to be the same as the
[07:38] final tip in the getting into books
[07:40] video which is to get involved with the
[07:43] community if you're a fan of Goodreads
[07:45] Goodreads has manga on their listings
[07:47] there's also my anime list which is
[07:50] basically the same thing as Goodreads as
[07:53] far as I can understand it but there's
[07:55] also online communities and forums and a
[07:58] lot of YouTubers that focus on Manga and
[08:01] Anime as well and you can find
[08:03] communities through them getting
[08:04] involved with a community of people that
[08:06] are excited to see you experience it's
[08:08] their favorite story for the first time
[08:09] people who will be there to answer
[08:11] questions clarify things that you
[08:13] misunderstood help you when you when you
[08:16] don't when you need help on
[08:17] understanding something or on what to
[08:19] read next people that are excited to see
[08:22] someone new fall in love with their
[08:23] story bringing in the community aspect
[08:27] to reading is so so beneficial for me
[08:32] it's a great way to make friends it's a
[08:34] great way to make it more social but
[08:35] it's also a great way to make the story
[08:37] feel a lot more personal to you because
[08:39] it's become a personal thing a personal
[08:42] connection between you and other people
[08:44] like I said in the previous video social
[08:46] media is just a part of our Lives now
[08:47] it's just it's something that we
[08:50] actively participate in Daily so making
[08:52] books a part of our social sphere a part
[08:55] of our way of engaging with people
[08:57] across the world it just makes it more
[09:00] it exciting and more realistic to make a
[09:03] part of your daily life there are so
[09:05] many phenomenal manga fans that want to
[09:08] hang out with you and want to share
[09:10] their stories with you I've had a
[09:13] phenomenal experience being a complete
[09:15] newbie stepping into an environment that
[09:19] people grew up in and that are essential
[09:22] part of who they are me stepping in
[09:25] knowing nothing and wanting to engage
[09:28] I've been so welcomed and you will find
[09:31] people that don't want to welcome you
[09:32] but you will also find so so many people
[09:35] that are just so excited to share
[09:37] something they love so those are a
[09:38] couple of my tips as a newbie to manga
[09:40] that will hopefully help you get into
[09:43] manga as well maybe one or two of these
[09:45] will be a good launching point for you
[09:47] if you have some tips of your own to get
[09:50] more immersed into the genre or if you
[09:52] have some further recommendations that I
[09:55] didn't mention in this video please feel
[09:57] free to leave them in the comments I
[09:58] post videos every Monday Wednesday and
