8:14[00:00] getting into manga is one of the best
[00:02] decisions you'll ever make but only if
[00:04] you do it the right way if you let
[00:05] yourself get intimidated by all of the
[00:07] different kinds of manga that are out
[00:09] there or you just start reading what
[00:10] everyone else is reading you're gonna
[00:11] miss out on the dozens even hundreds of
[00:14] manga that almost feel like they were
[00:15] made just for you and for those of you
[00:17] who have been reading manga for years
[00:19] but you haven't really tried anything
[00:21] else you're gonna miss out on everything
[00:23] this industry has to offer so whether
[00:25] you're completely new to manga or you're
[00:27] looking to grow as a manga fan I'm gonna
[00:29] give you three easy steps that will help
[00:31] you develop a love for the industry as a
[00:33] whole and make rating manga as fun as it
[00:35] can possibly be the first step as
[00:37] obvious as it might seem is to find out
[00:40] whether you actually like reading manga
[00:42] it might be cool to talk about anime
[00:44] with your friends and those covers might
[00:46] look really cool in the bookstore but
[00:47] until you actually pick up a manga and
[00:49] try it out you won't really know if it's
[00:51] for you like I said I know this might
[00:53] seem obvious but this will be the
[00:55] difference between getting into manga as
[00:56] a whole or just getting into one series
[00:59] you just happen to really like now the
[01:01] easiest way to start is by reading the
[01:03] manga of your favorite anime for me this
[01:05] was Dragon Ball I loved playing the
[01:07] games as a kid but that was my main
[01:09] source of learning about the story one
[01:11] day I saw the original manga for sale
[01:12] and decided to give it a try years later
[01:14] I was a fan of the one piece anime I
[01:17] couldn't wait to find out what was
[01:18] happening later in the story so I
[01:20] decided to catch up to the manga this is
[01:22] the easiest way to get into manga
[01:24] because you already liked the story so
[01:26] it's really just a matter of reading
[01:28] that same story as it was originally
[01:30] portrayed but what if you don't have any
[01:32] anime you're interested in well then
[01:34] that's when you do what I said earlier
[01:35] if you go to the bookstore or the comic
[01:37] book store and you're like wow I have no
[01:39] idea what that is but it looks really
[01:41] cool then my suggestion is to start with
[01:43] that odds are if it looks cool then
[01:45] you're probably gonna enjoy it in fact
[01:47] that's exactly how I got into Shaman
[01:50] King I kept seeing it at the comic book
[01:52] store and this absolutely gorgeous cover
[01:54] was just like buy me buy me buy me so I
[01:57] said screw it and now I'm in love with
[01:59] it once you eventually find that one
[02:01] manga you do like then the last part of
[02:03] this step is to try out a few other
[02:04] manga like I said it might be the case
[02:07] that you really just like this one story
[02:08] if that's the case then you really
[02:10] shouldn't force yourself to Read Manga
[02:12] if you've tried a few and they just
[02:13] weren't for you but on the other hand
[02:15] you won't know until you try it's like
[02:17] people who try one crappy beer and then
[02:19] they're like yeah it's not really for me
[02:20] it's like there's hundreds of beers out
[02:22] there and you decided you don't like all
[02:24] of them based on this one shitty one you
[02:26] owe it to yourself to try at least a few
[02:28] more but let's assume you did all that
[02:30] and you've decided that you really do
[02:32] want to get into manga before I tell you
[02:34] the Second Step make sure to like the
[02:36] video if it's been helping you so far
[02:37] it's the easiest way to support the
[02:39] channel and to help spread the video to
[02:41] other viewers like you anyway now that
[02:43] you know you're a manga fan the next
[02:45] step is to find out what kind of manga
[02:47] fan you are this might seem kinda
[02:49] pointless at first but let me explain if
[02:51] you are trying to read more manga then
[02:52] you owe it to yourself to get the most
[02:54] enjoyment out of that experience as you
[02:56] possibly can and the best way to do that
[02:59] is to find out what kind of manga you
[03:00] like and which ones you don't like and
[03:03] to that you might say well aren't they
[03:04] basically all the same yeah no that'd be
[03:07] like if you said all fighting games are
[03:09] basically the same there's 3D Fighters
[03:11] 2D Fighters anime Fighters team Fighters
[03:14] whatever the heck smashes once you get
[03:16] into it you realize there's a bunch of
[03:18] different kinds of fighting games and
[03:20] those games are for different kinds of
[03:21] players and the same is true for manga
[03:24] readers there's battle Shonen fantasy
[03:26] Dark Fantasy gag comedies romances
[03:29] Sports Manga romance Sports manga the
[03:33] list goes on so it's like okay so how do
[03:35] I find out which ones I like the most
[03:37] well the best way to start is by reading
[03:39] different manga by the same author for
[03:41] example let's go with one of my personal
[03:43] favorites hiromashima let's say you went
[03:46] from the fairy tale anime to the Fairy
[03:48] Tale manga and now you're looking for
[03:49] something else well before fairy tale
[03:51] mashima wrote Rave Master Brave Master
[03:54] is a similar fantasy type story but it
[03:57] also takes a lot of different approaches
[03:58] to certain story elements so if you read
[04:01] that you might like the differences or
[04:03] you might not the same is true if you
[04:05] read even zero the manga he's writing
[04:07] right now you might find out that you
[04:09] prefer fantasy over science fantasy
[04:12] personally I came to realize I love the
[04:14] way this guy writes stories in odds are
[04:16] you probably will too but even if you
[04:18] don't at least you will start to see
[04:20] what your preferences are and why those
[04:22] are your preferences with that you'll
[04:24] have a much better idea of the manga you
[04:26] do enjoy for when you look for something
[04:27] new and on that note don't stop there
[04:30] once you read different manga by the
[04:32] same author reads a manga by different
[04:33] people you'll come to find which writing
[04:35] styles you like which kinds of
[04:37] characters you like and probably most of
[04:39] all you'll start to see which kinds of
[04:41] art styles you prefer there's a bunch of
[04:43] manga with really good art like Dr Stone
[04:45] one punch man and witch at adelier but
[04:48] you won't know if you like them until
[04:50] you try out stories by different mangaka
[04:52] after that it's just a matter of trying
[04:54] out different genres obviously the big
[04:57] one is Battle Shonen which is the more
[04:59] DBZ type story but like I said there's a
[05:01] bunch of genres there's Sports manga
[05:04] like haikyuu gag comedies like
[05:07] and there's romances and you might be
[05:09] like okay bro I'm willing to try out a
[05:11] manga about volleyball but I'm not about
[05:13] to try all that romantic stuff but trust
[05:16] me I didn't think I'd be into it either
[05:17] and now I love romance manga it's just a
[05:20] matter of finding the one you like or
[05:22] maybe you really don't like romance
[05:24] again try everything out try as many
[05:27] different manga as you can by figuring
[05:29] out what your preferences are and
[05:31] stepping outside of your comfort zone
[05:33] you'll be able to enjoy everything you
[05:35] possibly can out of the medium okay so
[05:37] now to the best of your ability you
[05:39] figured out what kind of manga fan you
[05:41] are the final step is pretty
[05:43] straightforward but it's one that a lot
[05:45] of people Overlook the third step is to
[05:48] become a more knowledgeable manga fan
[05:50] that probably sounds so pretentious but
[05:54] let me explain what I mean not too long
[05:55] ago everyone was claiming that the manga
[05:58] Phantom Seer was definitely going to
[05:59] blow up but then everyone was shocked
[06:01] when it got cut well if you had been
[06:03] paying attention to the magazine then
[06:05] you would have seen it coming Phantom
[06:07] Seer had good sales but it often placed
[06:09] in the lower spots of the table of
[06:11] contents and weakly Shonen jump and it
[06:13] almost never got color pages color pages
[06:15] are how the magazine promotes its manga
[06:18] for example Dr Stone was Often
[06:20] overshadowed by manga like one piece and
[06:22] jjk but it got tons and tons and tons of
[06:25] color pages even more than those two so
[06:28] you knew it wasn't going anywhere so if
[06:30] you ask me becoming a better manga fan
[06:33] means becoming as knowledgeable about
[06:35] manga as you can so you can see all of
[06:37] the different Trends and get a better
[06:39] appreciation for the industry the first
[06:41] way you should do this is one I just
[06:43] mentioned you should follow the magazine
[06:45] rather than a few manga you happen to
[06:47] like for example let's say you like one
[06:49] piece jjk or my hero Academia those are
[06:52] all published in weekly Shonen Jump so
[06:54] the first thing you should do is check
[06:56] out all of the manga that are currently
[06:58] running in weekly shown jump that
[07:00] includes all of the four new manga They
[07:02] just added and that includes the
[07:04] incredibly over hated me and roboco now
[07:07] do you have to catch up to every single
[07:08] one you should try but at this point you
[07:11] know what kind of manga fan you are so
[07:13] there's no point in forcing yourself to
[07:15] read a series you clearly don't like at
[07:17] the very least you'll be able to follow
[07:18] the trends and jump and get an idea of
[07:20] how it compares to other magazines and
[07:22] on that note the next thing you need to
[07:24] do is check out other magazines so for
[07:27] example I mentioned hiromashima earlier
[07:29] well Eden zero is currently running in
[07:32] weekly Shonen magazine so you can check
[07:34] out the other battle Shonen from that
[07:36] magazine like fire force which actually
[07:38] ended not too long ago or its spiritual
[07:41] successor gotchi Akita it also has its
[07:44] own batch of romance manga as well as
[07:46] whatever the heck Ranger reject is I
[07:48] really like Ranger reject I just feel
[07:50] wrong for some reason calling it a
[07:52] battle Shonen it could be a battle
[07:53] Shonen I just I don't know I'm stupid
[07:55] point being there's a whole other world
[07:57] of manga outside of weekly Shonen Trump
[07:59] and these other magazines have their own
[08:01] Trends going on you owe it to yourself
[08:03] to check out the different magazines
[08:05] that way you'll be able to follow all of
[08:07] the different Trends in the industry but
[08:09] once you're on the up and up on things
[08:11] in the industry the next thing you
[08:13] should do is check out the classics
[08:15] again pretty straightforward but still
[08:17] essential manga has been around for a
[08:19] while and there's a lot of manga that
[08:21] inspired the ones that are out right now
[08:22] Dragon Ball obviously inspired the big
[08:25] three but there were other great manga
[08:27] out at the time like JoJo's Bizarre
[08:28] Adventure and Fist of the North Star
[08:30] they might be a bit different from the
[08:32] manga that are currently running but
[08:34] they're still really good plus once you
[08:35] read those manga you start to appreciate
[08:37] the trends in manga as a whole you'll
[08:39] see what it was like in the earlier
[08:41] decades and how it's changed over time
[08:43] then when a new manga comes out you can
[08:45] be like oh wow they're really changing
[08:46] things or Okay cool so they're going for
[08:49] more of a bobobo type story they're
[08:52] definitely not doing that I just really
[08:53] want you to check out
[08:55] anyway the only thing left after all of
[08:58] this is something you're probably really
[08:59] already doing at this point especially
[09:01] if you're subscribed to this channel
[09:03] that is make sure you engage with the
[09:05] community don't get me wrong one piece
[09:07] fans are the worst thing about one piece
[09:09] and Twitter makes everything worse but
[09:11] talking with everyone else about what
[09:13] they're reading is going to help you
[09:14] become more knowledgeable as a reader
[09:17] you'll see what other people like and
[09:18] don't like you'll see how people react
[09:20] to new chapters and you'll challenge
[09:22] Yourself by coming across some
[09:24] recommendations and New Perspectives on
[09:26] some of your favorite stories and
[09:28] characters but at this point that's all
[09:31] I can suggest see if you even like manga
[09:33] find out what kind of manga fan you are
[09:35] and then challenge yourself to get a
[09:37] better appreciation for the industry as
[09:39] a whole if you follow those three steps
[09:41] not only are you guaranteed to fall in
[09:43] love with manga but you will get as much
[09:45] fun out of it for as long as you
[09:48] possibly can now those were my three
[09:50] tips at this point I want to hear your
[09:52] thoughts what do you think is the best
[09:54] way to get into manga how can you become
[09:56] a better manga fan share your thoughts
[09:58] and see what everyone else has to say
[10:00] down in the comments I'll pick my
[10:02] favorite and share as a comment of the
[10:04] week on my community Tab and if you'd
[10:06] like another video like this one then
[10:08] check out my recent video on the five
[10:10] best Manga for starters you can find
[10:12] that video in the playlist linked right
