I spent $2,840 charging my Tesla for 50k miles
47sReveals the actual cost of charging an EV over significant mileage, surprising many who assume it's much cheaper.
▶ Play ClipThis video details the actual costs of owning a Tesla Model 3 over 52,000 miles, comparing them to the estimated costs of a gasoline car. The creator breaks down expenses for charging, maintenance, and insurance, revealing total savings of nearly $8,000.
Over 52,000 miles, total charging cost was $2,840, split between home ($1,335) and Superchargers ($1,505). Home charging was cheaper overall, but road trips increased Supercharger usage.
Using the Tesla app's calculation based on Nevada gas prices, the equivalent gas cost would have been $7,296. This translates to a fuel savings of $4,456 over 52,000 miles.
Total maintenance cost was only $158, including air filters ($30), tire rotations and balances (3 times, $40 each = $120), and windshield washer fluid ($8). The car still has its original tires.
ChatGPT estimated maintenance for a gas car over 50k miles ranges from $1,920 to $4,600, highlighting significant potential savings for the Tesla.
Monthly premium is around $93.79 (with a 99 safety score). Over two years, this totals about $2,251, but the owner warns that Tesla Insurance is slow with claims despite being cheaper.
Assuming an average gas car insurance of $150/month, the Tesla owner saves about $56.21 per month, totaling $1,349.04 over two years.
Total Tesla cost (charging + maintenance + insurance) = $5,245. Estimated gas car cost (using conservative estimates) = $13,235. Net savings = $7,990.04.
Driving a Tesla is not cheap, costing around $5,245 over 52,000 miles, but it saves a significant amount compared to a gas car. The owner plans to drive it to 100,000 miles and will provide another cost update.
"The title is mostly accurate, but the creator only includes a narrow set of costs (charging, maintenance, insurance) and excludes depreciation, purchase price, and tire replacement (though tires are still original)."

9:42[00:00] my longrange model 3 has hit 50,000
[00:03] miles in a little over 2 years I'm going
[00:05] to go through all the costs which
[00:07] include charging maintenance and
[00:09] insurance and compared them to what an
[00:11] average gas car would have cost me over
[00:13] those miles I did a whole 50,000 Mi
[00:15] review which included cost and a bunch
[00:17] of other things that's on my channel but
[00:19] in this video I'm just talking about the
[00:21] costs so let's go ahead and talk about
[00:23] my main expense first which has been
[00:25] charging and technically I'm just a hair
[00:27] over 52,000 Mi you can see my total
[00:30] spent charging over the life of my car
[00:33] in 2022 was
[00:35] $689 in 2023 was
[00:38] $1,679 and in 2024 so far it's been
[00:42] $472 and that all adds up to a total
[00:45] charging cost of
[00:47] $2,840 and the app is pretty cool
[00:49] because it actually shows you how much
[00:51] you spent at home versus at
[00:53] superchargers so at home over that time
[00:55] in 2022 I spent
[00:58] $276 in 202 three I spent $718 and so
[01:02] far in 2024 at home I spent $341 for a
[01:07] total at home charging cost of
[01:10] $1,335 and on the other hand
[01:12] supercharging in 2022 I spent $413 and
[01:15] 2023 I spent $961 and so far in 2024 I
[01:20] spent $131 for a grand supercharging
[01:23] cost total of
[01:26] $1,505 which I actually found kind of
[01:28] interesting because we charge at home
[01:30] pretty much all the time except when we
[01:32] go on road trips which kind of makes
[01:34] sense because on road trips although
[01:36] we're only gone for a weekend or a week
[01:38] or two at most we do rack up a lot of
[01:41] miles and superchargers are quite a bit
[01:43] more expensive than at home charging so
[01:46] just keep in mind if you're somebody who
[01:47] doesn't road trip as much as we do your
[01:50] cost for charging can be a lot less than
[01:52] what ours is but anyways
[01:54] $2,840 to go a little over 52,000 Mi may
[01:58] or may not sound like a lot so let's see
[02:01] what it would have cost us if we were in
[02:02] a gas car and what's cool about the
[02:04] Tesla app is that when calculating these
[02:06] savings it takes into account the
[02:08] average gas prices in your state and I
[02:11] think gas is a little more expensive
[02:13] here in Nevada so anyways 2022 like I
[02:15] said I spent $689 charging gas would
[02:19] have cost me
[02:21] $1,771 so I saved a total of
[02:24] $1,082 that year in 2023 I spent $1,679
[02:29] gas would have cost me
[02:31] $4,240 so that year I saved
[02:36] $2,565 and this year so far like I said
[02:39] I spent $472 charging gas would have
[02:42] cost me
[02:44] $1,474 and this year I have saved
[02:47] $102 so far so adding it all up like I
[02:50] said I spent
[02:51] $2,840 charging gas over the last 52,000
[02:55] mil would have cost me somewhere around
[02:58] 7,29 $6 so in total by not having to get
[03:03] gas I have saved
[03:07] $464 which is a pretty good chunk of
[03:09] change and that's only for charging
[03:11] let's go ahead and talk about
[03:12] maintenance next and spoiler alert this
[03:15] will be a short section because I have
[03:17] not done much to my car because I
[03:19] haven't had to maintenance wise the
[03:20] things I've done so far I've put in air
[03:23] filters I've put air in my tires I've
[03:25] done tire rotations three times and I
[03:28] bought a gallon of windshield wash fluid
[03:31] and that's it the air filters I
[03:33] installed myself and listen I'm not very
[03:35] handy so if I can do it you can
[03:37] definitely do it I bought these air
[03:38] filters from Amazon from a company
[03:40] called the basor they're very easy to
[03:42] put in they kit comes with everything
[03:43] that you need I'll leave a link down
[03:45] below if you're interested and these
[03:47] cost me $30 I have put air in my tires a
[03:50] few times it doesn't cost me anything
[03:52] but it is maintenance and something that
[03:54] I can do myself I've also rotated and
[03:57] balanced my tires three times I think
[04:00] Tesla recommends specifically every
[04:03] 6,250 miles to rotate your tires so
[04:06] maybe over the last 52,000 miles I
[04:08] should have done it more often but I've
[04:10] done it three times so far for a total
[04:12] of $40 each which adds up to a total of
[04:16] $120 by balancing and rotating my tires
[04:19] and yes I did have to buy a gallon of
[04:21] windshield washer fluid even living here
[04:23] in Vegas although it was not from Vegas
[04:26] it was from our cross country road trip
[04:28] we got stuck in Colorado in a snowstorm
[04:31] so I went through a ton of the
[04:32] windshield washer fluids I had to refill
[04:34] it I sat at a local gas station there
[04:36] and that cost us a total of $8 and
[04:39] technically I had this maintenance as
[04:41] well this literally happened the morning
[04:44] after I got my car I had 17 freaking
[04:46] miles on the odometer and while it
[04:49] sucked it was 100% the other driver's
[04:51] fault obviously so this actually didn't
[04:53] cost me anything except for some severe
[04:55] heartbreak for a while so between the
[04:57] air filters rotating my tires and the
[04:59] windshield washer fluid maintenance has
[05:02] cost me a total of
[05:04] $158 and you may notice that I didn't
[05:06] include tires and well that's because
[05:09] I'm still on the original tires people
[05:11] say that Tesla tires tend to wear much
[05:13] quickly but at 52,000 Mi mine are still
[05:16] looking pretty good and I do have the
[05:18] acceleration boost and while I do enjoy
[05:20] that from time to time I generally don't
[05:22] drive like a maniac so maybe that's
[05:24] helped preserve the life of the tires so
[05:26] my maintenance cost is $158 which is
[05:28] super low but how much would I have
[05:30] spent if I was driving a gas car so
[05:32] obviously I couldn't find exact stats of
[05:35] how much maintenance costs for 50,000 mi
[05:37] in the gas car so I asked chat GPT after
[05:40] 52,000 Mi on a typical gasoline car how
[05:43] much would a person spend on average in
[05:45] maintenance costs and it told me the
[05:47] first 50,000 mi in a gas car includes
[05:50] these things and cost somewhere between
[05:53] 1,920 and
[05:55] $4,600 so how much have I saved well
[05:58] pick whatever number you want between
[05:59] 1920 and 4,600 and subtract 158 and
[06:04] that's about how much I saved which is a
[06:06] lot now let's talk about insurance and I
[06:08] do have Tesla insurance and to be honest
[06:11] I don't recommend Tesla Insurance when
[06:13] something happens it is impossible to
[06:15] get a hold of an adjuster or anybody at
[06:17] the Tesla insurance company but they are
[06:20] the cheapest for Teslas at least by a
[06:22] pretty good amount compared to other
[06:24] companies I've gotten quotes from so
[06:25] Tesla Insurance monitors your driving
[06:27] habits it gives you a safety score
[06:29] depending on how safe you drive and then
[06:31] it gives you a rate based on your safety
[06:33] score and I think I saw somewhere a
[06:35] safety score of 90 is average but my
[06:38] fiance and I drive normal I would say
[06:41] and we have no issue getting in the high
[06:43] 90s for our safy score so I feel like 90
[06:45] is not hard to do but I just wanted to
[06:46] clarify that because based on our safety
[06:48] score our insurance premium does go up
[06:51] or down a few dollars a month depending
[06:53] on our score that month and also I do
[06:55] have pretty decent insurance coverage
[06:57] much more than the minimum so keep that
[06:59] in mind so anyway my upcoming premium
[07:01] for this month here in October is
[07:05] $93.7 and that's based off a safety
[07:07] score of 99 and like I said it does go
[07:09] up or down a few dollars month per month
[07:12] but let's use this number and compare
[07:14] insurance premiums to a gas car so again
[07:16] I asked chat GPT what does an average
[07:19] driver pay per month for car insurance
[07:21] and an average gas car it gave me
[07:24] somewhere between 125 and 175 so we'll
[07:26] use 150 just for an estimate so doing
[07:29] some quick math let's do 150 minus what
[07:31] I pay $
[07:33] 9379 equals $
[07:36] 5621 which is about how much I'm saving
[07:39] per month by using Tesla insurance and
[07:41] like I said I've had my car for a little
[07:42] over two years so if we take that number
[07:45] that I'm saving per month at 5621 and
[07:47] take it over two years I saved
[07:52] $1,349 and4 cents on car insurance over
[07:55] 2 years and I know some people actually
[07:57] say that Teslas are more expensive to
[07:59] ensure but most Tesla owners I talk to
[08:01] are actually saving money on their car
[08:04] insurance especially those who also have
[08:06] Tesla insurance and yes again even with
[08:08] that much savings we still wouldn't
[08:10] recommend Tesla Insurance the model 3
[08:13] collision went okay but we got an
[08:14] accident in our model y back in February
[08:17] and it is now October we are still
[08:19] waiting for our deductible because they
[08:21] guy didn't have insurance but it's long
[08:23] story but things just move super super
[08:26] slow with Tesla insurance so let's go
[08:28] ahead and wrap up all up what you've
[08:30] been waiting for how much I've spent in
[08:32] total versus how much I have saved in
[08:34] total so my total cost including
[08:36] charging maintenance and insurance total
[08:39] charging cost at home and supercharging
[08:41] combined
[08:44] $2,840 maintenance
[08:47] $158 and insurance to use an estimate
[08:51] 9379 would I spend over two years so
[08:53] let's just say I spent about
[08:56] $2,250 196 adding all that up that
[08:59] brings me to a total cost of
[09:02] $5,245 sounds like a lot let's go ahead
[09:06] and see how much I saved using math from
[09:08] before the amount of money I saved
[09:10] charging was
[09:14] $464 the amount of money I saved on
[09:16] maintenance so the cost for maintenance
[09:18] in a gas car we said was between 1920
[09:21] and
[09:22] 4,600 let's just say like 2,000 for a
[09:25] super conservative estimate I guess so
[09:27] 2,000 saved on maintenance and insurance
[09:29] I saved a total of like we said
[09:33] $1,349 4 which brings me to a total
[09:36] amount saved of
[09:39] $7,990 4 which if you ask me is quite a
[09:44] bit a chunk of change which my takea
[09:46] away from this is that driving a Tesla
[09:48] is not super cheap $5,000 still a quite
[09:50] a bit amount of money even over 52,000
[09:53] miles but driving a gas car can be a lot
[09:56] more expensive so there you have it all
[09:58] my cost over 52,000 Mi I posted my
[10:01] 50,000 Mi review video and I had people
[10:03] tell me despite all the stuff that I
[10:06] showed you that my costs were wrong so
[10:08] if you think I'm wrong I'm sorry but I I
[10:10] showed you how I got my numbers but I do
[10:12] love this car and I plan to drive it for
[10:14] a very very long time so I'll make
[10:16] another video just like this one once I
[10:18] hit 100,000 miles so stay tuned for that
[10:20] but between now and then we'll continue
[10:22] to take our car and a bunch of camping
[10:24] trips road trips and other fun
[10:25] adventures so if you want to see all
[10:27] that make sure you subscribe and and as
[10:29] always thanks for watching catch you in
[10:31] the next one
