I Shut Down My Smart Home for 24 Hours

[00:03] 24 hours and this is your fault by the way you guys uploaded the comment for this to happen and of course the commenter's name is vicious devil I'm we're going to miss but what if my family overall likes it without my smart

[00:20] home what if I like certain things without it that's what I'm nervous about but there's only one way to find out let's do this

[00:48] there were blinking red lights dashboards weren't working and I was getting emails about devices being offline what's the big deal I just walk in a room and flip on the light switch and then when I leave I turn off the

[01:00] light maybe those smart home haters have a point then my hands were full and I lights didn't automatically turn on so I couldn't see anything okay yeah I want my smart home back but do I need everything no like the accent lights in

[01:16] here these make me really happy and I like them a lot it's actually kind of weird to see them off right now but could I live without them of course this does not apply to all my accent lighting though I really like like the warm

[01:30] includes all the smart light bulbs and light strips it helps us wind down before bedtime so that's something I don't feel like could live without basically what I'm realizing is that there's levels to all of this like sure

[01:44] I can live without the smart light switch next to my door in the studio the garage though it's a different story yes there's a light switch right next to the door going into the garage but I can't press that when I'm pulling in my car

[01:57] late at night unless I first walk across a dimly lit garage to turn it on Arizona and I'm normally wearing flip-flops and I don't know if you've ever been stung by one but I have in the foot and it was terrible not only that

[02:12] but not having a smart garage means I have to either carry around a garage or install a number pad garage door opener on the outside I don't want to do that a smart garage controller is something that I can't live without I

[02:26] was observing my family to see if they would be begging me to turn the smart home back on but they seem pretty content wait a second oh GRE which one of these turns on the lights in here it's the one on

[02:39] the far left okay so you do miss our smart home well I mean I guess our smart home's not perfect but it makes things more convenient just when I thought you know what I got this all figured out something came out of left field and

[02:53] totally surprise me yes motion lights are convenient and the RGB lights underneath these bathroom counters to let me know when the shower water is hot enough nice to have yes I can live without that but this this might drive

[03:08] me crazy allly left the lights on and who knows how long they've been on for there's only one thing I can do turn off the light and say nothing if you're married you know if I say something we all know where I'll be sleeping tonight

[03:23] lights were left on everywhere I either had to go around and turn them off or just accept the fact and not worry about it nope I can't handle it actually yeah I think that was me who left those ones on I can't believe people like having a

[03:37] non-smart home so in their free time they can just turn off light switches all day I don't understand there are things in my smart home I don't miss much or at all like automations that announce things on the smart speaker at

[03:50] first it's fun but eventually it can get annoying so I can definitely live without them well you seem happy today yeah because a smart home has a yo that means for the bad air quality well you still like our smart home right yeah I

[04:05] love it because it's not working right now what without my smart home there are tasks that I completely forgot I had to do before like turning on my computer speakers I used to just press a button on the dashboard but now I have to get

[04:19] up and flip a switch on the back it's absolutely terrible oh and the fan under my desk I'm supposed to get out of my chair and crawl under my desk to turn it on and off no way I could not live without these connected to my smart home

[04:34] under here is from dreo I bought it to replace a noisier fan that was getting annoying dreo fans are great at being quiet especially their tower fan in our theater room it's extremely quiet for how much air it blows out on a hot

[04:47] summer day and the noise doesn't distract from the movie at all so it's perfect oh and shout out to dreo for sponsoring this video their fan actually integrates very nicely into home assistant so when it's hot the fan

[05:00] rest of the theater room and I can control it from the dashboard so I don't have to get up plus I can dial in how much the fan rotates so it always blows on the chairs and nowhere else it's amazing at CES I visited the dreo booth

[05:14] and they had something I'd never seen before this brand new fan has millimeter waves so it can follow whoever's in front of it or if there are two people it will automatically go back and forth just enough to cover them so smart they

[05:28] that doubles as a fan and a heater and I love the idea of not cluttering my house with both I really like the dril fans in my house since they cool me off with a annoying and allly likes him for her glamour shots if you're interested check

[05:56] else did either luckily no no one came and been standing out there in the dark but automated porch lights definitely a must have another little thing is the security alarm easy just set it before

[06:09] we walk out the door yeah that happened like one time ever my smart home isn't even Auto arming the alarm when we leave might as well not even have it but the vibration sensor that turns the lights brighter when using the countertop yeah

[06:23] that's not necessary it's a fun party trick though and the pendant lights don't actually work right now because they're smart bulbs in there so yeah sorry family the pendant lights might be the only main thing in my home that

[06:36] stopped working without my smart home running most people probably think it's a full-on nuclear meltdown if our smart home's not controlling it anymore but actually I designed it in a way that you can control most devices around the

[06:48] ceiling lights are controlled by Lutron cada smart dimmer switches so the lights can still be controlled by the physical switch and even though I unplugged the Lutron Bridge the pic over remote still work I I forgot that this is the case

[07:02] and no wonder Lutron so reliable do I miss having them connected to my smart home oh yeah especially when we're watching TV oh the lights are so bright child turn off the lights so we can watch TV not again Dad turn the smart

[07:17] home back on oh and normally our string lights turn on from opening up the back door well that's obviously not working so to turn them on we have to walk all the way to the back side of the house to

[07:29] them on because in Arizona when it gets below freezing we have to cover our plants weird right well allly had to walk over and do this because I was in the middle of something and she was not

[07:41] happy I thought I might not survive she was definitely missing our smart home and so was I especially walking around in the dark in the dark dangerous wa hey it's dark don't

[07:58] run do you do you even know where the light switch is to say that the entire family is ready for the smart home to turn back on but there are a few things that caught me by surprise one is not having to always

[08:13] think about the automations and worrying about them running all the time this started off really nice I'm not having to worry about debugging it or fixing any automations when the smart home's not running at all that quickly went

[08:25] away when I had to remember to do a bunch of things around the house like turn off the front porch lights which I completely spaced until a few minutes ago so yeah they had been on all night another thing that stood out for me was

[08:38] not receiving phone notifications from my smart home I've tried to cut back on these in the past but it was actually really nice not to receive anything during this 24-hour time so I've been thinking of ways to still Notify myself

[08:52] but have it not be annoying so I'll be working on that more in the future the last thing that really stood out for me was that some automation should probably was that some automation should probably be a fail safe and not be so aggressive

[09:04] let me explain so when we had our smart home completely turned off none of the lights were automated so they never changed at the wrong time and never were annoying in that way which was actually kind of nice because sometimes our

[09:17] lights will switch over from cool to Warm White and it'll happen at dinner time and the whole family will let out a sigh of frustration I'll have to fix it really quick so maybe that happens later if I never switch it over to the warm

[09:33] lighting so it's more of like a fail safe and that way our smart home doesn't like Alli doesn't like the window shades automated during the day and I really didn't notice or mind not having that automation when everything was turned
