AI Summary

This video provides a comprehensive guide to the Porsche 911, covering generations from the air-cooled 964 and 993 to the water-cooled 996, 997, 991, and 992. The presenter details the pros, cons, common issues, and market values for each model, offering practical buying advice for enthusiasts. The core message is that while each generation has unique characteristics, a well-chosen 911 can be a rewarding and financially sound investment.

[01:18]
Porsche 997 Overview

The 997 is considered the most 'Porsche-looking' modern 911, with a design that blends classic and modern elements. It is essentially a refined version of the 996, sharing the same structure but with improved styling, particularly the headlights.

[03:06]
997 Buying Guide: Oil Leaks and Under Trays

While 997s can leak oil, it's less severe than on air-cooled models. A missing under tray is a major red flag, as it can hide oil leaks, chassis dents, and overspray, indicating a lack of owner care.

[04:05]
997 Bore Scoring Reality Check

Bore scoring is rare on M96/M97 engines and often not a critical issue. Many cars with light bore scoring are driven for years without problems. A boroscope inspection is recommended, but a full engine rebuild is often unnecessary panic.

[05:52]
997.2 DFI Engine Tick

The direct fuel injection (DFI) engine in the 997.2 produces a normal ticking sound at idle. This is a characteristic of all DFI engines and is often mistaken for bore scoring. A louder exhaust can mask the sound.

[07:30]
997 Battery Drain and Warning Signs

997s drain their batteries when parked. A battery tender is essential. A low battery can cause sensor errors and false warning lights, leading to unnecessary mechanic visits. The car should be started every two weeks.

[08:24]
997 OBD2 and Over-Rev Records

The 997's OBD2 system stores detailed data, including over-rev counts on the DME. A professional scanner is needed to read this. A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is crucial as the car's history is fully recorded.

[09:55]
997 Resale Value and Condition

The 997's value is driven by condition and history, not just mileage. Buying the best example possible is smart, as prices are rising and the car will likely sell for more in a few years, making it less expensive than a depreciating new car.

[11:10]
Porsche 996 Market and Perception

The 996 is a victim of its own success, with 175,000 units sold, flooding the market and suppressing prices. Despite being a lighter, faster, and stiffer car than the 993, its 'fried egg' headlights and perceived lower interior quality keep prices low.

[12:34]
996 Interior Quality vs. Air-Cooled

The 996's plastic dashboard is more durable than the cracking dashboards of earlier air-cooled 911s. The perceived lower quality is due to more plastic surfaces, but the actual longevity of the materials is superior.

[15:05]
996 Body and Rust Resistance

Cars from the 996 generation and newer are largely rust-free unless improperly repaired after a crash. This is a significant advantage over earlier air-cooled models, reducing restoration costs and headaches.

[19:43]
Porsche 991 Reliability and Engine

The 991's 9A1 engine is proven to be rock-solid, shared with the highly-priced 997.2. It is considered the most trouble-free 911 engine ever made, with many examples exceeding 200,000 miles. Accessory issues like water pumps are minor maintenance.

[21:06]
991 Dual Nature: Comfort and Performance

The 991 is a dual-nature car: a comfortable cruiser on the highway and a sharp, hardcore sports car on back roads. It is more daily-drivable than any earlier 911, with a lighter and stiffer structure.

[22:38]
991 Interior Leather Quality

The 991's leather interiors are exceptionally durable because Porsche removed the plastic backing, bonding leather directly to foam. This prevents the shrinking and warping common in other luxury cars, making full leather interiors a worthwhile option.

[26:54]
991.2 Turbo vs. 991.1 Naturally Aspirated

The 991.2's turbo engine offers more usable torque and is easier to tune for extra power. However, it changes the exhaust note. The key advantage of the 991.2 is the optional rear-axle steering, which makes the car feel more agile.

[29:17]
Porsche 911 992 Resale and Options

The 992's resale value is heavily influenced by options. Limited editions and cars with unique, expensive options (like special colors and full leather) command a premium. A manual transmission is a no-cost way to guarantee higher resale value.

[34:45]
992 Long-Term Value and Demographics

The 992 is expected to appreciate long-term due to increasing global brand awareness. More people know what a 911 is than ever before, driving demand. The 911's consistent design and strong community also support its value.

[37:24]
Porsche 964 Overview and Popularity

The 964 is a favorite because it blends classic air-cooled character with modern conveniences like a good HVAC system, making it a usable daily driver. It draws a crowd and has a 'concentrated mass' feel that is unique.

[40:56]
964 Body Rust and Windshield Area

While the 964 body is galvanized, rust can form around the windshield due to shrinking seals. This is a common issue and not necessarily a sign of neglect, but it must be addressed. RS models are more prone to rust due to reduced rust-proofing.

[43:26]
964 Brake Caliper Seizing

If a 964 is parked for over 24 months, the brake calipers are likely to seize. This is a common issue from non-use, not neglect, and should be budgeted for in a purchase.

[44:41]
964 Records and Expert Inspection

Records for a 964 can be unreliable due to easily removable speedometers. An expert inspection is more valuable than a standard PPI. Hiring a Porsche specialist to fly and inspect the car is worth the cost to avoid a costly mistake.

[46:48]
964 Engine: Oil Leaks and Compression

The 964's air-cooled engine is robust but will leak oil. The key health check is a compression test on all cylinders. Loss of compression is a serious issue, while minor oil leaks are normal.

[49:42]
964 Dual Distributor Belt

The 964 has two distributors linked by a rubber belt. If this belt breaks, only one spark plug per cylinder fires, which can lead to predetonation. This is not obvious during a test drive and requires expert inspection.

[50:26]
964 Dual Mass Flywheel

The dual-mass flywheel on manual 964s can fail, causing clunking. Replacing it requires dropping the engine. Many owners switch to a lightweight RS flywheel for quicker revs.

[54:01]
964 Air Conditioning and R12

The 964's HVAC system was designed for R12 refrigerant. Converting to R134a significantly reduces cooling performance. R12 is still available and is recommended for optimal A/C in hot climates.

[56:45]
Porsche 993: The Last Air-Cooled 911

The 993 is the last of the air-cooled era and was never truly replaced. It is considered the most beautiful 911 and was overbuilt by Porsche, who was losing money on each car. This over-engineering makes it incredibly durable and desirable.

[58:29]
993 Value: Overbuilt and Underpriced (Historically)

The 993's value has risen because it was a money-losing product for Porsche, built with exceptional quality. Unlike other classic cars driven by pop culture, the 993's value is intrinsic to the car itself. It is a usable investment that can be daily driven.

[61:52]
993 Design and Daily Usability

The 993's design is timeless, and Porsche has tried to recapture its look with every subsequent generation. It is a practical daily driver with modern features like a good A/C and six-speed gearbox, while retaining the classic 911 character.

Choosing the right Porsche 911 depends on your budget, desired driving experience, and tolerance for maintenance. While air-cooled models like the 993 and 964 offer classic character and strong investment potential, water-cooled generations like the 997 and 991 provide modern reliability and performance, with the 996 representing a potential bargain.

[00:00] many say that you really haven't lived

[00:02] until you've owned a Porsche 911 but

[00:05] with so many of them on the road and so

[00:07] many different Generations which one is

[00:09] the best one for you I dig into most of

[00:12] the Porsche 911s for sale today that

[00:14] includes air cooled 91s and the water

[00:17] cooled 911s including the Porsche 996

[00:21] 997 991 and finally the latest Porsche

[00:25] 992 I can tell you I love them all

[00:28] however they each have their Pro and

[00:30] cons and so owning a Porche 911 might be

[00:32] your childhood dream but you need to

[00:34] know exactly what you're getting into so

[00:36] that it does not turn into your

[00:38] childhood nightmare as an adult what we

[00:40] do is if we need that extra push over

[00:43] the cliff you know what we do put it up

[00:45] to 11 exactly so if you think that only

[00:48] a Porche 911 might be in your future

[00:50] don't forget to like And subscribe

[00:52] because we've got a lot more pors of

[00:54] videos coming up really soon and so in

[00:57] no particular order let's start with the

[01:01] yes let's start with the 997 Come a

[01:03] Little Closer ask anybody in the street

[01:05] which one you think is newer and you're

[01:07] going to get answers that you might not

[01:09] expect let's just say the answers will

[01:11] be way off and that's how you know that

[01:14] Porsche did an incredible job with the

[01:16] Porsche

[01:18] 997 in this video I'm going to cover the

[01:20] Porsche 997 why it's so popular what to

[01:23] look for and if it's worth the expense

[01:25] and don't forget to do all the YouTube

[01:27] stuff like subscribe and I forgot what

[01:29] was the other one and share it really

[01:31] does help out the channel let's go why

[01:33] do so many people think the 997 is the

[01:35] best modern 911 just look at it this is

[01:39] the most porsa looking modern Porsche

[01:42] that Porsche has ever made from every

[01:44] single corner it screams Porsche it

[01:46] looks like a 959 from the front and a

[01:48] proper 911 from the rear now it's

[01:51] interesting that this car is almost

[01:53] exactly the same car as the Porsche 996

[01:56] yet a lot of people love the 997 but

[02:00] hate the 996 and it's essentially the

[02:02] same car yes it's upgraded but those

[02:04] headlights would truly have made this

[02:07] car a favorite of so many it looks like

[02:09] an older 911 and like a newer 911 so

[02:12] driving down the street with this car

[02:13] you really can't tell how old it is

[02:15] whatsoever and I think that my favorite

[02:17] part as far as looks is the rear slope

[02:19] the rear slope on the 997 is a proper

[02:22] 911 you see how the slope goes all the

[02:25] way down past the belt line into the

[02:27] bumper that's exactly what a 911 sh

[02:29] should be it just looks extra aggressive

[02:31] extra 911 now when I talk about looks

[02:34] it's interesting because you see this

[02:35] car in pictures and it looks a lot

[02:37] bigger than the earlier aircooled 911s

[02:39] but this is one of the best things about

[02:41] the Porsche 997 it is sports car size so

[02:44] no extra fat just the perfect Dimensions

[02:46] so this compact size adds to its driver

[02:49] feel now remember that the newer ones

[02:51] got a lot bigger in the outside but they

[02:53] did not get a lot bigger in the inside

[02:55] now when looking at Porsche 997 unlike

[02:57] the earlier aircool 911s you actually

[02:59] have have to be a lot more careful

[03:01] because a lot of what to look for is

[03:03] totally hidden so I'm going to go down

[03:04] the list of the few things to look for

[03:06] on a 997 and the ones that feel like red

[03:09] flag but they're really not oil leaks

[03:11] 997s leak oil but the oil leaks are

[03:14] nothing like they were with the earlier

[03:16] air cooled cars the earlier air cooled

[03:18] cars leaked so much oil that the smell

[03:21] that they give is part of the car's

[03:23] Essence which I kind of like that kind

[03:24] of oil and rubber mixed smell I I love

[03:27] it but on 997s on a hot engine cover

[03:30] when you pull it up you should not smell

[03:32] any oil whatsoever now what a lot of

[03:34] people don't know is that when they look

[03:36] under a 997 it usually looks perfect

[03:39] because those plastic panels that are on

[03:41] the car they hide a multiple of sins

[03:44] they hide dents in the chassis overspray

[03:46] from a repainted car and oil running

[03:48] completely under the entire car a lot of

[03:50] them actually don't have under trays

[03:52] anymore a lot of people just leave them

[03:53] off but if they're missing it's a huge

[03:55] indication of how much the owner cares

[03:57] about the car if he didn't bother to put

[04:00] it back on it's a red flag and it means

[04:02] that the car needs extra inspection

[04:04] moving on to the next one one of the

[04:05] ones that everybody loves to talk about

[04:07] is bore scoring now bore scoring on the

[04:10] m96 and m97 engines is very rare it's

[04:14] also rare on the newer DFI motor but you

[04:16] know how the internet is the first red

[04:18] flag is a black and tail pipe usually on

[04:21] the driver's side but if the car was

[04:22] detailed by a dealer chances are that

[04:24] you won't see it there the easiest way

[04:26] to find out if the car has bore scoring

[04:28] or anything that could be like that is

[04:29] is to get a little Bard scope just like

[04:31] this and it's so simple even a baby

[04:33] could do it you pull out the spark plugs

[04:34] and you stick the little camera down the

[04:36] cylinder wall a lot of them you could

[04:38] even see on your phone it's not a

[04:39] complicated thing now a thing about

[04:41] board scoring I've seen cars with board

[04:43] scoring that they keep driving year

[04:45] after year nothing happens the engine

[04:47] hasn't blown up the owner is enjoying it

[04:49] the owner's tracking it the owner's

[04:51] going to events they just keep driving

[04:53] it's not a big deal So eventually

[04:55] something's going to happen to the motor

[04:56] but

[04:58] 99.999% of the the rebuilds that I'm

[05:00] seeing from board scoring are with board

[05:02] scoring that are very light the car was

[05:05] driving perfectly and the mechanic

[05:07] recommended to have a full engine

[05:09] rebuild to get it addressed now in most

[05:11] cases the owner could have kept on

[05:12] driving for years you will hear a

[05:15] ticking sound if there's issues with the

[05:17] board scoring you will hear it most

[05:18] owners are rebuilding these engines in a

[05:21] panic when the mechanic says listen your

[05:23] engine's bad and you need to go ahead

[05:24] and get it rebuilt it's a tough call

[05:26] especially because I know a lot of

[05:27] Porsche 997s that have b exporing and

[05:30] they just they're dty drivers most

[05:31] people are doing full engine rebuilds

[05:33] when they see a little line in the

[05:35] cylinder walls it's ridiculous moving on

[05:38] to the next point with the Porsche 997

[05:40] there's so much BS on the internet that

[05:42] owners and would be owners are

[05:44] constantly looking or hearing for any

[05:46] little tick any little sound that could

[05:49] be like the engine exploding or

[05:50] something but there is something that

[05:52] can cause concern on the

[05:54] 997.2 with the newer engine you see what

[05:57] most people read is that that car does

[05:59] not have have the IMs but that car is a

[06:01] DFI motor direct fuel injection direct

[06:04] injection which is really stupid because

[06:06] it clogs up the intake so bad that you

[06:08] have to pull it apart and clean it and

[06:10] most people are surprised to learn that

[06:12] direct fuel injection has like a tick at

[06:21] idle like and it's not just the 997 it's

[06:25] all direct fuel injected cars it's just

[06:27] that a lot of cars have a lot of

[06:28] insulation with the plastic covers to

[06:30] quiet down that sound the 97 doesn't

[06:32] have that so you can actually hear it

[06:34] from the outside when the car is idling

[06:35] it's completely normal that's just how

[06:38] the fuel injection is in that car a lot

[06:40] of owners worry that the car is ticking

[06:42] because of boore scoring and it's just

[06:44] the fuel injectors if the injectors on

[06:46] that car are too loud a solid exhaust

[06:48] system fixes most

[06:50] [Music]

[06:52] problems it's a nonissue on to the next

[06:54] point one of the great things about the

[06:56] Porsche 997s is that the owners baby

[06:58] these cars so it's very rare that you're

[07:00] going to find a Porsche 997s with Falcon

[07:03] Tires or with mismatch tires all the way

[07:06] around but that also means is that a lot

[07:08] of owners are throwing too much money

[07:10] into these cars what do I mean full body

[07:12] paint protection films now I get it

[07:15] these paint protection films can be good

[07:17] if you're going to be daily driving the

[07:18] car it kind of saves the paint only a

[07:20] little bit by the way so I wouldn't pay

[07:22] a premium for any car that's had paint

[07:24] protection fil you want to keep your

[07:25] paint perfect to keep the car in a

[07:27] garage that does more than any paint

[07:28] protection film ever will moving on to

[07:30] the next one battery draining these cars

[07:33] all drain battery now you can put a

[07:35] battery cut off on it which a lot of

[07:36] people don't the best thing you can do

[07:38] is put a battery tender on it now what a

[07:40] lot of people don't realize is that if

[07:41] you don't put a battery tender on the

[07:43] Porsche 997 if the car has been parked

[07:46] for a month and the car starts so

[07:48] basically the battery didn't drain the

[07:50] battery is actually at a lower State and

[07:52] you are going to get a lot of warning

[07:54] signs because a lot of sensors are not

[07:56] going to fully fire up and those error

[07:58] codes stay in the computer and you're

[07:59] chasing Gremlins that don't exist make

[08:02] sure that that car gets started up every

[08:03] 2 weeks otherwise you might definitely

[08:05] get warning signs and then the worst

[08:07] thing that you could do it go take it to

[08:08] a mechanic where for sure he's going to

[08:10] help you find something and all it was

[08:12] is just a battery that is going now this

[08:15] is not 997 specifically the same thing

[08:17] happens with the Porsche 928 perhaps

[08:19] even more a lot of people just go ahead

[08:20] and put battery cut offs on that just to

[08:22] not deal with it moving on to the next

[08:24] point one of the good things about the

[08:25] Porsche 97 is that it's OBD2 now for

[08:28] guys that like older Classics OBD2 is

[08:30] like wo you just take a little scanner

[08:32] it actually tells you what's wrong with

[08:34] it so this is great for a lot of

[08:35] different reasons but with the Porche 97

[08:37] OBD2 is not a way to see what the codes

[08:40] are in the car you actually have to take

[08:41] it to a tech where they have a

[08:43] professional scanner that can tell you

[08:45] everything about the car there's a lot

[08:47] of cars that are driving perfect but

[08:48] they have been over revved 12 20 30

[08:51] times and guess what all that

[08:53] information is there recorded on the DME

[08:56] which is great you actually find out

[08:58] more on a PPI than than most earlier

[09:00] Porsches just because they put it in the

[09:02] scanner and you cannot hide anything

[09:04] another great thing is that the miles

[09:05] are recorded on there so unlike early

[09:07] portions which in many cases the miles

[09:09] are because it's so easy to change the

[09:11] miles on those cars on the newer 96 and

[09:13] 97s everything is recorded in the

[09:16] computer so in the Porsche 997

[09:17] specifically a pre- purchase inspection

[09:19] and a set of Records is super important

[09:21] just because you can't tell on that car

[09:23] just by looking at it the best bet is to

[09:25] find a trusted mechanic that you know

[09:27] develop a relationship before buying the

[09:29] car because these cars are getting to

[09:31] such an age now that even if it was

[09:33] running perfect it's going to start

[09:34] having maintenance things that need to

[09:36] get done to it now why is that so

[09:37] important because usually trouble cars

[09:39] are always trouble Cars and Cars that

[09:41] never give trouble usually never give

[09:43] trouble so for example if a car doesn't

[09:44] have board scoring at 90,000 Mi guess

[09:47] what it's probably never going to have

[09:49] board scoring if the car doesn't have

[09:50] IMS issues at 90,000 Mi guess what it's

[09:53] probably never going to have IMS issues

[09:55] now as far as the deals I've learned

[09:57] with 997s what you're really shopping

[09:58] for is condition you're shopping for the

[10:00] history of a car and if the car has been

[10:02] abused or neglected one thing is 100%

[10:06] sure with the 97 whatever you buy this

[10:08] car for jump 3 4 years and you're going

[10:11] to sell it for more so in a way is less

[10:13] expensive than buying a new mini van

[10:15] that drops half its value in 2 3 years

[10:18] so that's why it's super important to

[10:19] get a 997 in the best condition possible

[10:22] because if you do happen to sell the car

[10:24] and most people actually do eventually

[10:26] because we're not on this planet forever

[10:27] whatever money you put into that car you

[10:29] pull it right back out so resale is a

[10:31] huge part of the 997 appe it sells fast

[10:34] and the prices keep going up they

[10:36] haven't achieved 993 levels yet but a

[10:38] lot of people are already saying that

[10:39] the 997 is the next 993 and judging by

[10:43] the way that the prices keep going up

[10:44] it's entirely possible so it makes no

[10:46] sense to try to get a deal on a Porche

[10:48] 97 because that deal is going to cost

[10:51] you more when you go ahead and you

[10:52] resell that car so on a Porche 997 it's

[10:55] okay to splurge to spend just a little

[10:57] bit more on the one that you really like

[10:59] because at the end of the day you'll

[11:01] always get your money back on that car

[11:02] so are you really splurging or are you

[11:04] being smart so that's the way that I

[11:06] feel about the Porsche 97 Porsche 911

[11:10] 9996 let me start by saying that Porsche

[11:12] would love to have another 996 now on

[11:16] this video I'm going to explain the

[11:17] market on this car and the prices why

[11:19] they are what they are let's look at the

[11:21] actual car versus the market first when

[11:23] the 996 came out the 996 was bigger than

[11:26] the 993 but it was lighter it wasn't

[11:28] just bigger it was also faster lighter

[11:30] and most importantly the structure was

[11:32] stiffer a lot stiffer as a matter of

[11:34] fact the handling advantages of the 996

[11:37] versus the 993 come from the increased

[11:39] wheelbase and most importantly the

[11:41] stiffer structure the structure of the

[11:43] 996 is essentially the same one in the

[11:45] 997 they are essentially the same car

[11:48] the 997 is a refined 996 you wouldn't

[11:51] know that by looking at these huged car

[11:53] prices let's see what's going on looking

[11:54] at the car as far as the quality of the

[11:56] car 996 versus a car replaced the the

[11:59] Porsche 993 well I've got some thoughts

[12:01] on it that are very different than

[12:03] anything that you read online these cars

[12:06] are all getting old now so basically

[12:07] every single one of these used cars are

[12:09] going to need some kind of restoration

[12:11] unless you're buying them in low mile

[12:12] unbelievable condition so the first

[12:14] thought that comes up with any classic

[12:15] car is restoration what are you going to

[12:17] do to the car and most importantly how

[12:19] has the car held up over time how has

[12:21] the car held up has it disintegrated in

[12:23] the elements in the weather or is it

[12:25] holding up is a true test of the quality

[12:27] of the car let's look at some specific

[12:29] earlier air cooled 911s versus this new

[12:32] 996 let's start with the interiors that

[12:34] seems to be the main complaint about the

[12:36] Porsche 996 that the Interiors are very

[12:39] plastically and just not up to the same

[12:41] quality of the earlier aircool 911 that

[12:43] is BS with a few asterids let me explain

[12:46] this one the dashboard on the earlier

[12:48] aircool 911s all crack eventually it

[12:51] uses the same material that the Porsche

[12:53] 944 used and 968 and the Porsche 928

[12:58] given enough time and parked outside in

[12:59] the sun those dashboards crack 996s nope

[13:03] those plastic dashboards on the 996s

[13:05] even though the rake on the windshield

[13:07] is far more so it gets more sun they do

[13:09] not crack as a matter of fact if you

[13:11] look up online comparing the price of a

[13:13] 996 dashboard versus a 993 dashboard

[13:16] it's night and day and the only ones

[13:17] that do go bad are the leather WRA ones

[13:19] but every single other leather WRA

[13:21] dashboard goes bad not a symptom of the

[13:23] quality of the dashboard is just the

[13:24] leather so as far as the Plastics in the

[13:26] earlier 911s versus the later 96

[13:28] Generations if we're going to measure

[13:30] perceived versus actual actual quality

[13:32] is actually higher in the 996 is

[13:34] Plastics versus the earlier air cool 991

[13:37] cars so why the outrage on the 996 is

[13:39] interior well there's just more plastic

[13:42] more plastic than there was in the

[13:43] earlier cars plastic is not good at the

[13:45] end of the day nobody wants plastic in

[13:46] their cars which that all changed by the

[13:48] way in the Porsche 996 turbo those came

[13:51] with standard leather rep dashboard you

[13:53] sit in a 996 turbo versus a standard

[13:55] Carrera and you'll see the difference

[13:56] but the standard ones are fantastic

[13:58] because they last far better than the

[14:01] earlier aircool 911 dashboards 928

[14:03] dashboards 944 dashboards and 968

[14:06] dashboards and of course the 924 let's

[14:08] look at the rest of the Interior what it

[14:09] would cost to restore a 996 versus an

[14:12] earlier car the seats if you got to

[14:14] replace worn leather on a por 996

[14:16] interior you can pick from 996 seats

[14:18] boxer seats and the newer generation 997

[14:20] seats they bolt on another thing that

[14:22] these cars suffered from as a matter of

[14:24] fact a lot of BMWs too BMWs Ferraris

[14:27] Austin Martin are sticky buttons on

[14:29] radios like this this radio is a

[14:31] standard radio that came in most 996s

[14:34] and 986s the Becker unit what's the

[14:36] biggest complain about these radios that

[14:38] they're not up to the same quality of

[14:39] the earlier ones the buttons you wipe

[14:41] them down with alcohol and put them back

[14:43] you don't have to worry about it again

[14:44] yet when you sit inside the car you go

[14:45] to turn on the radio your impression is

[14:47] of a sticky interior just because you

[14:49] touched this little thing ridiculous I

[14:51] would be far more concerned about a

[14:53] cracked dashboard or seats that are

[14:55] super expensive to repair the little

[14:56] plastic parts this is not the argument

[14:58] that you're going to find find anywhere

[14:59] when you talk about this car the first

[15:01] thing you're going to hear is that the

[15:02] interior is not up to the same level as

[15:04] before let's move on to the body you

[15:05] don't have to worry about rust with

[15:07] anything from the 996 and up unless it's

[15:09] been crashed and improperly repaired

[15:11] rust is just not a big factor in the

[15:13] body of these newer cars these cars are

[15:15] not getting younger they're getting

[15:16] older and rust it starts becoming a main

[15:18] concern you don't have to worry about

[15:19] any of that with the Porsche 96 and up

[15:21] it's something less of a headache the

[15:23] body is as good as it get and as as good

[15:25] as Porsche has made the cost to restore

[15:28] these cars are far less than the earlier

[15:30] aircool 911s but the perception of lower

[15:32] quality sticks around like it never goes

[15:35] away it's ridiculous now living in Miami

[15:37] has definitely affected how I feel about

[15:40] cars in general what happened here is

[15:41] very similar to what happened all over

[15:43] the world when the pora 996 came out

[15:45] remember that Porsche replaced the

[15:47] freshly restyled 993 with the 996 the

[15:50] 993 was only about 3 years old when the

[15:52] 996 came out and the 996 completely

[15:54] outsold that car for his entire

[15:56] generation and that unbelievable amount

[15:58] of success for Porsche is the 96's

[16:00] biggest problem today let's see exactly

[16:03] how successful that car was for

[16:05] comparison purposes let's compare the

[16:06] porsa 996 to other Porsches the Porsche

[16:09] 928 from 1977 to 1995 sold only 61,000

[16:13] cars all over the world that was it the

[16:16] other cross up that you would have is

[16:17] the Porsche 993 well the Porsche 993

[16:20] from 1993 to 98 they sold 68,000 cars

[16:24] 68,000 cars guess how many Porsche 996

[16:27] is Porsche sold from 98 to to 2005 it

[16:29] sold

[16:32] 175,000 cars that is even more cars than

[16:35] the 944 sold from 1982 to 1991 they did

[16:39] 163,000 cars and that was supposed to be

[16:42] the entry level Porsche this more

[16:43] expensive 996 out sold all of those

[16:45] controversial mm I don't think so if it

[16:48] would have been so controversial it

[16:49] would not have sold in the numbers that

[16:50] have sold if Porscha was giving a

[16:52] bargain if pora was giving a deal well

[16:53] then perhaps that could be controversial

[16:55] at out sold but no it didn't they were

[16:56] charging full prices for these Cars Plus

[16:59] on and so the market was flooded with

[17:00] these cars now it's easy to forget how

[17:02] many of these cars were sold if you look

[17:04] at options like this you see a series of

[17:06] 996 cars a series of 993 997 cars right

[17:10] next to it and you think why is the 996

[17:12] so much less expensive if you see these

[17:15] sales you're only seeing a static

[17:17] picture of what has sold you're not

[17:18] seeing the backlog a huge pool of cars

[17:21] that are coming in and out of the market

[17:22] all the time and bring a trailer in the

[17:24] same amount of time that the 993 sold

[17:26] about 500 cars almost 999 96 were sold

[17:29] that doesn't even begin to give you an

[17:32] entire picture of all the other cars

[17:33] that are setting in the used car market

[17:35] cuz remember bring a Trader is just a

[17:36] very small Niche that is the biggest

[17:38] reason that these cars prices are a deal

[17:40] it is simple supply and demand the more

[17:43] cars on the market the price goes down

[17:44] it was Porsche's most successful Porsche

[17:47] 911 it is a victim of its own success

[17:50] there is more these cars available now

[17:52] to purchase then 993s 997s 928s 968 for

[17:56] sure and so the prices hav climbed how

[17:59] they have with these other cars got

[18:00] nothing to do with the styling of these

[18:02] cars with the headlights it's got

[18:04] nothing to do with that if that were

[18:05] true the 996 GT3 and 996 turbo will be

[18:08] selling for peanuts they're not those

[18:10] cars sell out a premium even with the

[18:11] headlights these headlights are already

[18:13] becoming cool the Simplicity it's pure

[18:15] classic Porsche no one ever says a bad

[18:18] word about these style headlights when

[18:20] they're on a GT1 the good thing about

[18:22] these cars is that the prices have

[18:23] already stabilized as a matter of fact

[18:24] the prices are actually going up high

[18:26] quality condition 996 is are selling

[18:28] already for more than higher mileage 997

[18:31] these are essentially the same car the

[18:32] engine cost about the same that it cost

[18:34] air cooled 911s to rebuild the Interiors

[18:36] are cheaper to redo and the body you

[18:37] won't have to worry so much about rust

[18:39] with these cars versus the earlier 911s

[18:41] it's a win-win for these cars now if

[18:42] you're looking to flip it for double or

[18:44] triple like some other used car classic

[18:46] you might be out of luck with this car

[18:47] but if you're looking to buy and hold on

[18:49] for a while enjoy it in the meantime

[18:51] this definitely is the car for you

[18:52] imagine a machine that Roars to life a

[18:55] machine that completely defies limits

[18:57] and a legacy that races Through Time all

[19:00] encapsulated in the Ferocious Porsche

[19:03] 991 welcome ferow Thrill Seekers to the

[19:06] world where curves and straightaways

[19:08] become your canvas and the Porsche 991

[19:11] is your paintbrush inside the cockpit

[19:14] you're not just a driver you are a

[19:16] warrior a commander of torque and

[19:18] horsepower almost perfect well in this

[19:22] video I'm going to cover the Porsche 911

[19:24] 991 years 2011 to 2019 if you are a

[19:29] buyer or you already own a Porsche 911

[19:32] this video is for you wo but first

[19:34] enough with the windows shopping hit the

[19:36] like And subscribe button it signals the

[19:38] algorithm to push this video out to more

[19:40] Porsche enthusiasts let's go most

[19:43] Porsche 91's now are coming out a

[19:45] warranty and so one of the biggest

[19:47] questions that most people possibly have

[19:48] to themselves is is it reliable well if

[19:51] we're looking at the engine and

[19:53] transmission they have already proven to

[19:55] be a rock solid how Rock Solid the 9 A1

[19:58] engine in the Porsche 991 is the same

[20:01] engine that is in the Porsche 997.2 and

[20:04] guess what the 997.2 go for a huge

[20:07] premium and the main reason that they go

[20:10] for a premium is because of that engine

[20:12] knowing a lot of Porsche shop owners

[20:14] here in Miami universally every single

[20:16] one of them praises the Porsche 991 is

[20:19] the most trouble-free 911 that Porsche

[20:21] has ever made I know a lot of 997.2 with

[20:24] over 200,000 mies and they are daily

[20:27] driven and they are perfect so if that's

[20:29] any indication of the Mechanicals of

[20:31] these cars they are a go except for a

[20:34] couple little things that are not really

[20:36] engine related they're accessory related

[20:38] for example the water pump can give

[20:40] issues some people have had to replace

[20:41] them at 30,000 Mi some at 40,000 Mi and

[20:44] some never but I wouldn't consider that

[20:46] engine related even those attached to

[20:48] the engine those are accessories and

[20:49] they're also maintenance items you're

[20:51] going to have to replace a water pump

[20:52] anyways eventually and they're not that

[20:55] expensive the only thing bad about the

[20:56] Porche 91's engine is that you can't see

[20:58] it but you can definitely hear

[21:02] it the Porsche 991 is a very very

[21:06] different car than any earlier Porsche

[21:08] 911 it's far more comfortable and far

[21:10] more daily drivable than earlier cars to

[21:13] the point where on the highway with a

[21:15] suspension softened up and the exhaust

[21:17] toned down it's a cruiser you can

[21:19] definitely do 5 600 m per day on a

[21:21] Porche 991 which is very similar to the

[21:23] Porche 928 by the way so I can see where

[21:25] the comparisons come from but

[21:26] longdistance Comfort is where the

[21:29] similarities end the Porche 991 is as

[21:31] hardcore as it gets and as a matter of

[21:33] fact it's a lot sharper than virtually

[21:36] every single earlier 911 except for the

[21:38] GT cars so it is most definitely not a

[21:41] grand tour so the Dual nature of the

[21:43] Porche 991 means that more people are

[21:46] looking at this Porsche 911 than

[21:48] virtually any other Porsche 911 in its

[21:50] history and it's been very popular for

[21:52] Porsche but it's not just that the car

[21:55] is more accessible it's not that at all

[21:57] there are huge Advan ments in the

[21:59] Porsche 991s that you do not see just by

[22:02] looking at it the structure on the

[22:04] Porsche 991 is completely different than

[22:06] the 997s this structure is bigger but

[22:09] also lighter and stiffer an ultra rare

[22:12] thing in cars today where everything

[22:14] keeps getting more and more bloated that

[22:16] didn't happen with the 991 it actually

[22:18] got lighter stiffer and yes a little bit

[22:20] bigger mainly in the track for better

[22:22] handling and stability so the structures

[22:24] of these Porsche 991s are rock solid and

[22:27] I can see the structure of these Porche

[22:29] n1s outlasting the owners easily and

[22:32] that's what you have in the Porche nn1 a

[22:34] Porsche that's going to last several

[22:35] decades Interiors this is something that

[22:38] has been universally praised on the

[22:40] Porche 91 the quality of the materials

[22:43] in the interior now there is a big

[22:44] difference between perceived quality and

[22:47] actual quality because plastic is

[22:49] plastic but what is far more impressive

[22:52] in the Porsche 991 is the leather

[22:55] interiors because usually leather

[22:57] interiors are a a liability for the

[23:00] second or third or fourth owner leather

[23:02] interiors specifically leather

[23:04] dashboards look great for a couple years

[23:06] until inevitably the leather starts

[23:08] shrinking it starts warping and the

[23:10] interior starts looking like a mess and

[23:13] this happens with most manufacturers

[23:15] that have full leather interiors but

[23:17] this is not happening with the Porsche

[23:19] 991 leather's leather right wait till

[23:22] you see this usually when you have

[23:24] leather bonded to plastic one of two

[23:26] things happens the leather shrinks and

[23:28] the adhesive that is connecting it to

[23:30] the plastic is not strong enough to hold

[23:32] the actual leather and so the leather

[23:33] pulls away the other thing is the actual

[23:36] adhesive itself the glue breaks down and

[23:38] loses all its strength it's not just the

[23:41] heat you see when the Plastics heat up

[23:43] they gas out and those gases the new car

[23:46] smell start breaking down the glue and

[23:48] so every single manufacturer is bonding

[23:50] their Leathers directly to that plastic

[23:53] so what did Porsche do they remove all

[23:55] the plastic on these 991 dashboards it

[23:58] looks like like this there is just the

[23:59] ever foam and the leather directly

[24:01] mounted to the Top This is how custom

[24:03] hot rods are built out in California and

[24:05] it's usually not cheap so with the

[24:07] portion 991 specifically full leather

[24:09] interiors are totally worth it so this

[24:11] new method of construction is the reason

[24:14] that the leather dashboards on the

[24:16] Porche n1's are holding up a whole lot

[24:19] better than anything that came before it

[24:21] now it's not all perfect the door panels

[24:24] to warp in the heat now if you're coming

[24:26] from a classic Porsche and you see this

[24:28] you're like who cares but if you've

[24:30] never done any kind of restoration once

[24:32] you see the door panel separating it can

[24:34] be a little bit alarming and it might

[24:36] make you think that there's something

[24:37] wrong with the car this can easily be

[24:39] fixed with some glue a heat gun and a

[24:41] couple clamps it's not a big deal it's

[24:43] kind of like first world problems

[24:45] considering what you're getting with the

[24:46] Porsche 9n1 size versus the earlier

[24:50] Porsche 911s another reason why Porsche

[24:52] enthusiasts say that 991 is more of a

[24:55] tour is because it's grown and it's so

[24:57] much bigger than the earlier 911s hold

[24:59] on just a second it's only a few inches

[25:02] bigger it's still a very small car for

[25:04] comparison I think that we all can agree

[25:06] that the Porsche 993 is a tiny car not

[25:10] that much bigger and we also can agree

[25:12] that the Porsche 997 is also a very

[25:15] small car you see the reason the Porche

[25:17] 911 looks bigger is mainly because of

[25:19] the higher belt line that also spans

[25:21] into the rear bumper makes it look a lot

[25:23] bigger than what it really is so the

[25:25] optical illusion of the raised Belt Line

[25:27] and the lower roof does make it look a

[25:29] lot bigger if it's by itself but the

[25:32] moment that you park it next to any

[25:33] other car you see the Porche 991 is

[25:36] still the size of a real sports car

[25:39] ceramic versus steel brakes when you

[25:41] search ceramic brakes online you're

[25:43] going to get two polar opposite opinions

[25:46] some people say it's worth it and some

[25:47] people say the breaking is worse in the

[25:49] cold and some people have sold their

[25:51] cars because of the ceramic brakes this

[25:54] is crazy most of the ceramic brakes that

[25:56] I've seen that drive not so good as in

[25:59] the car really doesn't have brake Feld

[26:00] when it's cold is because it doesn't

[26:02] have the OEM pads usually somewhere

[26:04] along the line the pads were changed and

[26:06] the brakes don't feel quite right if the

[26:09] pads are brand new it should have better

[26:11] bite when it's cold and much better bite

[26:13] when it's hot now there is this middle

[26:15] in the modulation that they can feel

[26:16] very different than the steel brakes

[26:18] that's why the steel brakes are so

[26:19] popular and so what a lot of people have

[26:21] done is change the brake pads to a

[26:22] different compound that is more drivable

[26:24] on the street and that's exactly what I

[26:26] would do if I had the Ceramics the

[26:28] packed brake pads they're far easier to

[26:30] drive on the streets especially if you

[26:32] don't know what kind of brake pads are

[26:33] even on your car instead of giving up on

[26:35] them try these brake pad they should

[26:37] help a lot and of course bleed the

[26:39] brakes a lot of people forget that now

[26:41] the other thing that I've heard is that

[26:42] ceramic brakes can be a little bit noisy

[26:44] and yes that's true it's just the

[26:46] harmonics of the brakes there's nothing

[26:48] wrong with them that's just the way that

[26:49] they are they're basically racing brakes

[26:51] for the streets so when the Porsche 991

[26:54] came out it was an NA motor so naturally

[26:57] aspirated motor with the 991.2 all 911s

[27:00] became turbocharged now you would think

[27:02] that that's a great thing because

[27:04] throughout the history the Porsche 911

[27:05] Turbo has been the king of the hill but

[27:07] believe it or not there's actually mixed

[27:09] opinions about turbos being standard on

[27:11] all Porche 911s well it's very simple

[27:14] the turbos act basically as a muffler

[27:16] and it changes the sound of the Porsche

[27:18] 911s

[27:22] engine but there are a lot of advantages

[27:24] to the 991.2 specifically power on paper

[27:28] it looks like you're getting only a

[27:29] little bump in power but what you're

[27:31] really getting is a lot of torque so the

[27:33] engine is a lot more usable in Daily

[27:35] driving the turbo spool up super fast

[27:38] and there's a very little turbo lag and

[27:40] if you need more power it's a lot less

[27:42] expensive to tune a turbo engine than a

[27:44] naturally aspirated

[27:47] engine because you can easily up the

[27:49] Boost with a simple tune and get an

[27:51] extra 100 horsepower you don't even have

[27:53] that option on the naturally aspirated

[27:55] engine and the 991.1 and a version of

[27:57] the engine keeps on living in the new

[27:59] Porsche 992 carplay it's still kind of

[28:02] laggy to be honest with you so I don't

[28:04] even count that the real reason to get a

[28:06] 991.2 is the rear steering that rear

[28:09] steering makes a 991 drive a lot smaller

[28:12] than the earlier models that don't have

[28:14] the rear steering what it essentially

[28:15] does is make the car feel like it has a

[28:17] shorter wheelbase that's what everybody

[28:19] has always loved about the Porsche 911

[28:21] it's short wheel base and not just

[28:23] because it's smaller but because when

[28:24] you have a short wheel basee Everything

[28:26] feels more immediate and so by for of

[28:28] doing this kind of Wizardry and creating

[28:30] this rear wheel of steering the car

[28:32] feels a lot more immediate when you're

[28:33] turning on the highway when you're

[28:35] hitting a bank or in a parking lot that

[28:37] one thing has made the electronic

[28:39] steering on the newer generation 991s a

[28:42] pleasure to have it'll never have the

[28:44] feel of a hydraulic steering but it's so

[28:46] much more precise with the rear steering

[28:48] that it makes it almost worth it almost

[28:50] I still prefer the hydraulic steering on

[28:51] the older porches the best thing is that

[28:54] it is such an advanced car and it hides

[28:57] it all on underneath is incredible

[28:59] Bodywork nobody will suspect the amount

[29:01] of engineering that has gone into a

[29:03] portion one if they see it drive by you

[29:05] only really start seeing the engineering

[29:07] when you drive it and after 30 years

[29:09] pass that the car is still ticking we've

[29:11] got One Life to Live and it's too short

[29:12] to drive boring cars find the nicest one

[29:14] you can find and enjoy the extraordinary

[29:17] the Porsche 9/11's 992s sculpted curves

[29:20] and roaring engine is not just about

[29:23] having fun in many cases it's also about

[29:26] turning a profit or at the very least

[29:28] not losing any money the Porsche 911 is

[29:31] not a normal car and the values explain

[29:34] this think of it as art with a Twist

[29:36] since I've had Porche since I was 17

[29:38] years old I've seen everything go up and

[29:40] down I see so many videos online about

[29:42] the depreciation curves the ups and

[29:44] downs how the resale of the poros are it

[29:47] kind of makes you think are these people

[29:49] thinking in terms of days or weeks or

[29:51] months it does not make any sense don't

[29:54] get me wrong it might make sense for

[29:55] dealers which are flipping cars but the

[29:58] average Enthusiast is looking to buy and

[30:00] hold if the prices go up and down a

[30:02] couple percentage points in the span of

[30:04] a year it does not affect most Porsche

[30:07] owners that being said it's always good

[30:09] to have an exit strategy and also what

[30:12] could be funner than enjoying a car for

[30:14] a period of time and then selling it for

[30:16] more so in many ways it's a double the

[30:18] fun but before we dive in make sure to

[30:21] hit the Subscribe button and the

[30:22] notification Bell drop a like and let's

[30:25] Embark into this journey of fun and a

[30:27] little bit of financial foresight you've

[30:30] got to remember that everybody who's

[30:32] ever purchased a Porsche 911 brand new

[30:34] has wanted it ever since they were a

[30:36] little kid it was not an Impulse buy

[30:38] when they were growing up they had one

[30:40] or two of these and if they were extra

[30:42] cool they had a 928 so by the time that

[30:45] they're looking to actually option out

[30:46] the car they've already had the car in

[30:48] their head for decades and they're going

[30:50] to order exactly how they want it this

[30:52] is one of the advantages of porsa not

[30:54] changing the design the car you wanted

[30:57] when you were 5 years old is still the

[30:59] car that you're going to want when

[31:00] you're 60 so this huge advantage that

[31:02] Porsche has means that almost every kid

[31:05] wants a Porsche 911 but they want it

[31:07] just a little bit different and that's

[31:09] where the options come in Porsche NOS

[31:12] exactly like Ferrari which also puts the

[31:14] options on a plaque in the car that in

[31:16] the secondary Market the options are

[31:18] what sell a car so obviously the limited

[31:21] edition models are usually the ones that

[31:23] automatically start going up and what I

[31:25] mean by automatically as in the

[31:26] depreciation curve really does not

[31:28] affect them these cars are sold at the

[31:30] dealership and usually stored away

[31:32] because they immediately start going up

[31:34] in value and the moment that any

[31:36] specific model is discontinued if it's a

[31:38] limited edition the prices in many cases

[31:41] double you can option it out any color

[31:43] you want and wrap every single piece of

[31:46] plastic in that car with leather even

[31:48] the buttons now it sounds extravagant

[31:51] but fast for 20 years the cars that are

[31:54] optioned out with a crazy colors and

[31:56] crazy options are the ones that command

[31:59] all the headlines and this trend is only

[32:01] growing so you might spend an extra 30

[32:03] or $40,000 on options but if you ever do

[32:06] sell the car in 10 15 20 years you've

[32:09] got something that is so special that

[32:11] everybody's going to want and it's going

[32:12] to be very easy to sell because there's

[32:15] not another one like it on the used car

[32:17] market and this is the trend that has

[32:18] been happening with Porsche 911s ever

[32:20] since the 80s it's just getting a lot

[32:23] more now beyond the crazy option cars

[32:26] the one thing that really doesn't cost

[32:28] anything to guarantee that the Porsche

[32:30] 911 992 that you're purchasing maintains

[32:33] its value far higher than all the other

[32:35] ones is going with the manual

[32:37] transmission and yes I know that the pdk

[32:40] is a far superior than the manual it's

[32:42] faster and in many cases far more

[32:44] reliable because you really can't miss a

[32:46] shift but better and faster does not

[32:48] equate a higher resell now there's a lot

[32:50] of theories on this why would a

[32:52] technically Superior Car be worth less A

[32:55] lot's got to do with the perception look

[32:57] on the auto Trader cars.com everywhere

[32:59] when you see pdk equipped cars it shows

[33:02] as automatic it's so much so that

[33:05] Porsche even changed the automatic lever

[33:07] on his GT3 to make it look like if it

[33:10] were a stick shift car this was the only

[33:12] reason they changed it so if you don't

[33:14] want to spend a lot on options but you

[33:15] still want to guarantee that your

[33:17] Porsche maintains a really high resale

[33:20] value just get the manual it's really

[33:22] easy to drive the clutch is super light

[33:26] it's it's it's almost like it's not even

[33:28] there believe me after the warrant's

[33:32] expired on the Porche 992 how is it

[33:34] going to behave well there's already a

[33:35] lot of cars on the road that tell us

[33:37] exactly how it is because the Porsche 92

[33:39] has a version of the Porsche 91's engine

[33:41] which has a version of the Porsche

[33:44] 997.2 engine those engin have been very

[33:47] reliable if you keep them stock if you

[33:49] start boosting them which is very easy

[33:51] to do by the way and don't upgrade the

[33:53] cooling system you're going to have

[33:55] issues like this

[34:02] and if you're the type of person that

[34:04] likes to take it to the dealership to

[34:05] get it fixed you're also going to have

[34:07] issues like this

[34:10] $883

[34:12] 25 to do this job now it's not as bad as

[34:16] it sounds you got to remember that

[34:17] theaters ships make their money with

[34:19] parts and labor in their service

[34:20] department so this price is what it is

[34:22] it wouldn't be the real price to get a

[34:24] Turbo fixed it's just a couple bolts and

[34:26] a swap so don't let this scare you the

[34:27] engines are rock solid and there are

[34:29] many 997 do2s and 991s already with over

[34:33] 200,000 Mi running trouble-free you see

[34:35] what I mean about the Porsche 992 being

[34:38] on the road for a very long time you

[34:40] can't do the depreciation math with 12

[34:42] or 24 months it doesn't make any sense

[34:45] as far as the life of the car the

[34:46] Porsche 992 is going to be on the road a

[34:48] long time many people say today the same

[34:51] thing that they used to say even when

[34:52] aircool 911s were new these cars will

[34:55] not appreciate how the older generation

[34:57] pora do this keeps happening over and

[34:59] over again realistically the Porsche 911

[35:01] 992 is going to be on the streets for

[35:04] the next 50 years and it's going to go

[35:07] through a lot of up and downs regardless

[35:09] of the economy because Styles and tastes

[35:12] change you've got to think longterm 10

[35:14] 15 20 years on the line in the early

[35:16] 2000s the Porsche 964 was selling in the

[35:19] teens and I remember that they were very

[35:22] difficult to sell everybody saw them as

[35:24] old and almost irrelevant look at it now

[35:27] it has become to many the ultimate

[35:30] Porsche to have and the prices totally

[35:32] match it the Porsche 996 for many years

[35:35] sold for below average because of its

[35:37] headlights but now the headlights are

[35:39] retr cool the Porsche 96 now is where

[35:42] the Porsche 964 was in the early 2000s

[35:45] under appreciated time to snap those up

[35:48] can the Porsche 992 ever be collectible

[35:51] considering that there are so many of

[35:53] them being made it's a simple yes and

[35:55] it's all about the demographics more

[35:58] people know about the Porsche 9911 now

[36:00] than they did when I was younger when

[36:01] the Porsche 993 came out I knew about it

[36:04] because I was obsessed with cars but

[36:05] most people did not know what it was

[36:07] even the kids in my high school didn't

[36:09] know what it was and they had no way of

[36:11] finding out what it was but today

[36:13] everybody knows what a pora 911 is that

[36:15] means your aunt your dad your brother

[36:18] even your abolita knows what a Porche

[36:20] 911 is so the demand is increasing

[36:23] relative to the cars being made that's

[36:25] why Porsche has taken the 911 more up

[36:28] Market because it can and the fact that

[36:30] it stays relatively the same means that

[36:33] brand awareness keeps going up so it's

[36:35] got time on its side and this doesn't

[36:37] happen with Ferraris and McLaren that

[36:39] they're constantly changing the broader

[36:41] Market really doesn't know what they're

[36:43] looking at when they see one of them

[36:45] they might think it's a Corvette so

[36:46] Porsche charges superar money because

[36:49] more people know there's also more

[36:51] porsia events all around the world than

[36:53] there are of any other make Ferrari

[36:56] included this means that when you

[36:57] purchase a Porche 911 992 you're

[37:00] actually buying into a community of

[37:02] really cool people that are down to

[37:03] earth and just love cars and it's all

[37:06] about branding they even built a tower

[37:08] here in Miami too much well that

[37:11] branding is what's going to guarantee

[37:13] that any Porsche 911 992 that you

[37:15] purchase will have an ultimate resale

[37:18] value versus any other car that you can

[37:20] purchase in this price range Porsche

[37:22] really knows what they're doing

[37:24] especially the past 20 years so will you

[37:26] like the Porsche 992 in a year after

[37:28] you've purchased it yes this is the last

[37:32] of the old school Porsches this is the

[37:34] ultimate air cool 911s for a lot of

[37:37] people around the world this is the

[37:39] Porsche 964 and this is the Porsche that

[37:42] a lot of people still don't understand

[37:44] why is it so popular why have the prices

[37:46] escalated and will you get burned if you

[37:49] buy one let's find out now this is one

[37:51] of my favorite portions of all time just

[37:54] enough of old air cooled field with

[37:56] enough modern conveniences to be able to

[37:58] drive it every single day so that it

[38:00] doesn't collect dust in the garage and

[38:02] maybe it's perfect for you too but first

[38:04] don't forget to like And subscribe it

[38:06] really does help push this video out to

[38:08] more people around the world so that

[38:09] more people can know about how good the

[38:10] Porche 964 is growing up the Porche 964

[38:13] to me was one of the coolest Porsches

[38:15] that I ever saw on the road and is

[38:17] incredible how much Porsches have

[38:18] changed since the 964 before seeing a

[38:20] Porsche on the road even here in Miami

[38:22] was an event people will stop you at gas

[38:25] stations to ask you about the car you

[38:26] will get a lot of looks as you're

[38:28] driving by now that was back in the day

[38:30] when these cars were new now it's

[38:31] Amplified even more let's just say if

[38:34] you like driving Incognito stay away

[38:36] from the Porsche 964 this car draws a

[38:38] crowd wherever it goes and it's not just

[38:41] about looks this is a bank fault on

[38:43] Wheels and more than Bank fault because

[38:45] there's a lot of cars that feel solid

[38:47] but they're big the Porsche 964 being

[38:49] one of the last old school porsa has a

[38:52] level of concentrated mass that adds to

[38:54] its specialness nothing feels like an

[38:57] old School classic 911 but the Porsche

[38:59] 964 is not old school you see that car

[39:02] was significantly changed from the

[39:04] earlier year 911 but is more than just

[39:06] extra comfort that this car has versus

[39:08] the earlier one now if you're like me

[39:10] you love Porsche 964 but are they worth

[39:12] all this height how popular is the

[39:14] Porsche 964 exactly I can give you an

[39:17] example if a Porsche 964 is for sale

[39:19] here in Miami it's not going to be a

[39:21] local sale chances are that car is

[39:23] leaving Miami and it's going to Dubai

[39:25] somewhere in California or it's exotic

[39:28] location all around the world so sales

[39:29] of Porsche 964 are usually not local

[39:32] sales the buyers for Porsche 964

[39:34] typically don't shop around their area

[39:36] and so this is driving up the prices in

[39:38] ways that could not have been predicted

[39:40] 20 years ago the good thing about the

[39:41] Porsche 964 is that if you're looking at

[39:43] these prices and thinking to yourself

[39:45] well I had a poster of this car as a kid

[39:47] I'm scared if I buy it it's not going to

[39:49] be as good as what I think is going to

[39:51] be if you've never driven a Porsche 964

[39:54] let me tell you that's not a concern

[39:56] with these cars most people people are

[39:58] incredibly surprised of the disconnect

[40:00] about how they think the car is versus

[40:02] how it actually is you see if you've

[40:04] only seen this car on a poster on

[40:07] pictures and never actually driven it

[40:09] you're going to be really surprised it

[40:10] feels and drives a lot better than what

[40:13] you would imagine and of course if you

[40:15] do you've got the air cooled 911 bug and

[40:17] you know it's going to be expensive but

[40:19] how expensive well there are some things

[40:20] that you can't get away from the

[40:22] purchase price luckily with the way the

[40:23] market is on these cars and it's not

[40:26] just a local market it's it's a

[40:27] worldwide Market the chances of losing

[40:29] your shirt on a Porche 964 it's very

[40:31] rare so you can buy it enjoy it for a

[40:33] couple years and then sell it for the

[40:35] same or more what you don't want to do

[40:37] is buy a car that you think it's perfect

[40:40] but turns out that it needs a lot of

[40:42] work a lot of expensive work cuz nothing

[40:45] is cheap in this car so let's dig into

[40:47] what to look for you're looking to

[40:48] purchase a Porsche 964 or if you

[40:50] actually have one parked in your

[40:51] driveway there's no way around that you

[40:53] need to know what you need to know about

[40:55] this car so let's dive in now when

[40:56] you're looking at at the Porsche 964

[40:58] Market you're actually stepping into an

[41:00] alternate reality you see no car that

[41:02] I've seen is stripped apart faster and

[41:05] over restored than a Porsche 964 so the

[41:08] owners are very meticulous about

[41:10] Restorations and originality not

[41:12] counting of course the updates and the

[41:14] back dat and all of these subcategories

[41:16] so if the body happens to need

[41:17] restoration believe me you can

[41:19] definitely find somebody to do an entire

[41:21] nut and bolt restoration on a 964 it's

[41:24] done all the time however it's very

[41:26] expensive and and timec consuming you

[41:28] can easily spend 2 years getting it

[41:30] right if that's not you then pay

[41:32] attention to this the Porsche 964 body

[41:34] is fully galvanized however that does

[41:37] not guarantee that this car is rust free

[41:39] since the Porche 964 begs to go to the

[41:41] track a lot have been taken to the track

[41:43] many times and many times I mean just

[41:45] once a month or twice a month but you

[41:47] add years to that and the possibility of

[41:49] any 964 getting in a small Bender Bender

[41:52] the odds are increased exponentially

[41:53] this means that looking for rust or

[41:55] bubbling of the paint is is hugely

[41:57] important if you want to do an entire

[41:59] restoration so you should see no rust

[42:02] anywhere in the body except a few areas

[42:04] that I give a pass to because it affects

[42:07] a lot of them and they haven't been

[42:08] crashed specifically around the

[42:10] windshield since the glass is not bonded

[42:12] to the chassis as the seal shrinks water

[42:14] seeps in and just chills in the little

[42:16] crevices around the outside rust starts

[42:18] forming in these areas very quickly I

[42:20] know cars that have had this repaired

[42:22] two or three times already it's a

[42:24] relatively straightforward fix however

[42:26] it if you don't address it the rust most

[42:28] definitely will spread so if you're

[42:30] looking to buy a Porche 964 and you see

[42:32] rust definitely budget that in but also

[42:34] remember that if you see rust around

[42:36] these areas that's usually not a sign of

[42:38] neglect it just happens with these cars

[42:40] now however there is one asteris to add

[42:42] to this if you're looking to get a 964

[42:45] RS that's a beast of a car right well

[42:48] that car is special not just in the way

[42:50] that it drives or that the body is seam

[42:53] welded no the rust proofing was almost

[42:55] completely eliminated from the factory

[42:57] so these are far more likely to rust if

[43:00] you don't baby them and what I mean baby

[43:02] as in garage drive right back to garage

[43:05] so much so that Porsche cut down the

[43:08] corrosion warranty from 10 years down to

[43:10] 3 years on the RS models they obviously

[43:12] know something that you should also be

[43:14] very careful with the rs's check them

[43:16] extra well and if you're fortunate

[43:18] enough to have one of these beautiful

[43:19] cars parked in your home don't even Park

[43:21] in on wet grass for extended amount of

[43:23] time the wet grasses mm- not good on to

[43:26] the next point a lot of these cars live

[43:28] parked now you think to yourself how can

[43:30] anybody enjoy a parked car well let me

[43:32] tell you that I do just looking at a

[43:34] parked car for me is enjoyable so these

[43:35] are not abandoned cars it's just cars

[43:38] that are not as driven as much and what

[43:40] happens when you don't really drive a

[43:42] Porsche 964 I will say specifically

[43:44] anything over 24 months the brake

[43:46] calipers start seizing up with the

[43:48] quickness and again this is not a sign

[43:50] of neglect this is just a sign of nonuse

[43:52] and if there's moisture in the air the

[43:54] calibers can seize up so much that they

[43:56] will need a full rebuild I wouldn't hold

[43:57] this against any car because it's been

[43:59] parked however you've got a budget that

[44:01] in the calipers are aluminum the

[44:03] stainless steel thrust plates collect

[44:05] dust and road salt or air salt and that

[44:08] can lead to some serious corrosion that

[44:10] you don't immediately see 2 3 months

[44:12] after you've driven the car it takes a

[44:13] couple months for this to really start

[44:15] seasoning up the calibers from my

[44:16] experience 24 months a car parked here

[44:19] in Miami I'm pulling Wheels check the

[44:21] brakes because the brakes seizing is one

[44:23] of the biggest things that happens with

[44:24] these cars that are purchased and not

[44:26] really driven that much the suspension

[44:28] on the other hand they last a long time

[44:30] 100,000 Mi and you still won't get

[44:31] clicks or clunks in this suspension so

[44:34] that's a lot easier to diagnose a dragon

[44:36] brake caliber is to be expected I

[44:38] wouldn't hold it against the car I would

[44:39] just budget it in on to next point when

[44:41] you're looking to buy any por 64 the

[44:43] most common advice that you usually hear

[44:45] is check the record and I agree with

[44:47] this I like to see a stack of Records

[44:49] going all the way back when the car

[44:51] first came out of the dealership however

[44:53] the records on the 964 might not be 100%

[44:57] % accurate what do I mean the

[44:58] speedometer gauge pulls right out and so

[45:02] yeah I'm not going so much for the mouse

[45:03] I mean you can and it's good as far as

[45:05] the history and the value of the car you

[45:07] know you've got your Carfax you've got

[45:09] all of that and so you want to have a

[45:10] natural progression of Miles like for

[45:12] example I've seen many cars with 30,000

[45:15] mies and they have seats like this and I

[45:18] could just tell by the side that that

[45:19] car easily has over 150,000 Mi so you

[45:22] actually have to go by the condition of

[45:23] the car and since when you're looking to

[45:25] buy a Porche 964 are it's not going to

[45:27] be in your local area you might be 1,000

[45:30] or 3,000 Mi away it gets really tricky

[45:32] ideally you have a sack of Records you

[45:34] have a phone number of the latest shop

[45:36] that service the car you can call the

[45:38] shop and if the shop remembers and knows

[45:40] the car that's as good as gold remember

[45:42] that however that's not always a

[45:44] possibility so in cases like this where

[45:46] you really don't know the car you really

[45:48] don't know the seller there's actually

[45:50] Services of Porsche Enthusiast that will

[45:52] fly to the car inspect the car for you

[45:54] for a fee and give you a report tag

[45:56] somebody in the comments below if you

[45:57] know anybody now this might seem extreme

[45:59] but having a Porsche 964 expert look at

[46:03] the car is worth more than 10 ppis let

[46:06] me explain yes it might be a little bit

[46:08] expensive relative to a regular

[46:10] pre-purchase inspection but if you just

[46:12] factor in the price of a headlight or

[46:14] respraying a rear bumper or any little

[46:16] thing on this car done right you've more

[46:18] than covered Yourself by sending an

[46:20] expert in there that really knows what

[46:22] they're looking at to look at your

[46:23] potential Porsche 964 believe me it's

[46:25] worth it I've seen people buy perfect

[46:28] Porsche 964 only to have them delivered

[46:31] back to their home and the project start

[46:33] don't do that get informed or find

[46:36] somebody that really knows Porsche 964

[46:38] and have them inspect the car for you

[46:41] the records are nice however they're not

[46:43] the end all and be all by a huge stretch

[46:45] on to next Point engines the Porsche 964

[46:48] is 3.6 L air cooled Flat 6 is an

[46:51] unbelievable Symphony Of Sound now if

[46:54] you're really picky about sound this car

[46:56] is like the full meal especially with

[46:59] exhaust however it's not perfect I

[47:01] remember all the way back in the 1990s

[47:04] when I got my first Porsche me and my

[47:05] brother would go to local shops here in

[47:07] Miami and dig the owner's brains about

[47:09] these cars my brother's an engineer so a

[47:11] lot of the things came naturally to him

[47:13] not to me as much but there is one thing

[47:15] that was an overwhelming response to the

[47:17] Porsche 964 they drive great they're

[47:20] really fun and they leak oil as a matter

[47:21] of fact if it's not leaking oil chances

[47:23] are it doesn't have oil and that's just

[47:25] part of it a lot of the tiny microscopic

[47:27] oil leaks are actually hidden by the

[47:29] under trays these under trays hide a lot

[47:31] of potential leaks so the only real way

[47:33] to trace oil leaks is to put it on a

[47:36] lift just like every single aircool 911

[47:38] and on a lift you can really diagnose if

[47:40] you have a potential oil leak however

[47:42] this car is going to leak oil and it's

[47:44] okay it's not a big deal the engines are

[47:46] really robust and they take a pounding

[47:49] now leaking oil and consuming oil are

[47:51] two totally different things but guess

[47:53] what these 3.6 engines also consume oil

[47:56] as a matter of fact Porsche has in their

[47:58] guidelines an allowable amount of oil

[48:00] usage that the airod 3.6 engines are

[48:03] allowed it being a flat 6 engine if a

[48:05] car has been parked for a while when you

[48:06] first turn around in the morning you

[48:08] might get a beautiful plume of white

[48:10] smoke that signifies oh no it's burning

[48:12] oil it's not if you just get it on the

[48:14] startup and it clears out that's natural

[48:17] however if you keep getting that

[48:19] beautiful white smoke then chances are

[48:21] it needs a bit more looking into when

[48:23] the Porsche 964 came out Porsche did not

[48:25] use gaskets between the cylinders And

[48:27] the cylinder head they instead used

[48:29] metal to metal contact and when these

[48:31] heads are torqued down you know

[48:33] Distortion is going to happen and if

[48:34] Distortion happens leaks happen and if

[48:37] the Distortion is enough you're going to

[48:38] lose compression the reduction of

[48:40] compression is the one thing that I

[48:42] would really watch out for even in 1990

[48:44] pora put a larger seating surface and

[48:46] seating rig to a lot of people cured the

[48:48] problem however it did not go away a lot

[48:51] of cars have been retrofitted but the

[48:53] leaks are there it's just part of the

[48:54] deal also it's important to know that

[48:56] oil leaks can come from anywhere in the

[48:57] engine and they often do but in most

[48:59] cases they're relatively small the thing

[49:01] is that they just add all up and if

[49:03] you've got to pull the engine to fix a

[49:05] little oil leak believe me you're not

[49:07] looking at a bill of changing a small

[49:09] oil leak because once the engine is out

[49:11] you might as well do everything that

[49:12] needs to be done to the 911 and usually

[49:14] the list is long so a little bit of oil

[49:16] leaking is normal however not to the

[49:18] point where the car is actually losing

[49:20] compression so checking the compression

[49:21] on all cylinders is the first thing to

[49:24] check on a Porsche 964 Flat 6 engine

[49:26] that was will tell you the real health

[49:28] of the engine so if you want to avoid

[49:30] that situation make sure the car is

[49:32] truly inspected by somebody that knows

[49:34] air cool 911 otherwise the car is going

[49:36] to be out of the road in the shop

[49:38] getting refreshed for quite a while the

[49:40] other thing that I would check for is

[49:42] the Dual Distributors if they're both

[49:44] firing you see because there are two

[49:45] spark plugs per cylinder and it's got

[49:47] two Distributors linked and th

[49:49] synchronized by a tooth rubber belt this

[49:51] belt can break leading to just one plug

[49:54] per cylinder firing and you know what

[49:56] you you can't always tell yes it can

[49:58] make it feel uneven or have flat spots

[50:00] in the RPM range but I know somebody

[50:02] that was driving around with a broken

[50:04] belt for over 2 years and did not notice

[50:07] as far as they're concerned their car

[50:08] was driving as good as new that's not

[50:10] good this obviously can lead to

[50:12] predetonation and that means blown

[50:14] cylinder head SEALS or Worse that's also

[50:16] an easy check that's not immediately

[50:18] obvious from any test drive unless

[50:20] somebody that really knows these cars is

[50:21] driving it on to the next point the Dual

[50:23] Mass flywheel on the manuals it actually

[50:26] makes it really smooth think of it as

[50:27] rubber in the flywheel and that's

[50:29] exactly what it is so this time in

[50:31] Porsche's history Porsche was trying to

[50:32] make their cars smoother and quieter as

[50:35] a matter of fact that's one of the

[50:36] reasons that the 96 came out the CEO at

[50:38] the time thought that nobody was going

[50:40] to pay more money for cars that were

[50:41] really loud and not as refined so in

[50:44] this quest to really refine the Porsche

[50:47] 964 they added this dual Mass flywheel

[50:49] with a rubber dampner and like anything

[50:52] rubber it first starts getting hard it

[50:54] starts cracking and then ironically

[50:56] after not much abuse you actually have a

[50:58] car that's clunking far more than a car

[51:01] than it just had a normal flywheel if

[51:02] you got to change the flywheel you can't

[51:04] do it with the engine inside so that

[51:05] means that if you can't do it yourself

[51:06] you've got to pay for the labor to go

[51:07] ahead and drop the engine to change out

[51:09] the clutch and flywheel a lot of people

[51:10] go with the lightweight RS flywheels

[51:12] which I personally like because it makes

[51:14] the engine rev a lot faster in a way a

[51:17] lot smoother as you're accelerating

[51:18] through the gears but not smooth as in

[51:20] heavy smooth I mean smooth as in eager

[51:23] smoothness and that's what the

[51:24] lightweight flywheel gives you the

[51:25] engine feels stronger and to me the

[51:27] engine feels like it's picked up an easy

[51:29] 30 40 horsepower feel and feel at the

[51:32] end of the day is all that matters at

[51:33] least to me on to next point the

[51:35] Tiptronic transmission now the Tiptronic

[51:37] transmission is a torque converter

[51:39] transmission so it's a conventional

[51:41] transmission and guess what it's great

[51:43] it really is it's not as engaging as the

[51:45] manuals but if you would read the test

[51:48] drives on this transmission back in the

[51:49] day everyone was like wow this

[51:52] transmission really takes a 964 to the

[51:54] next level now of course the driving

[51:56] enjoyment is not the same as the manuals

[52:00] however just driving an aircool 911 is

[52:02] enough for a lot of people believe me it

[52:04] really is so the automatic transmissions

[52:06] them being great they're also very

[52:08] reliable and they don't sap that much

[52:10] fun from the 964 so no bashing of the

[52:13] automatic because you know what one day

[52:15] every single one of us is going to get

[52:16] to a point where we really can't be

[52:18] shifting as much and just the fact you

[52:20] have the option of getting an automatic

[52:22] to enjoy an air cooled 911 is incredible

[52:26] for a lot of lot of people it's the

[52:27] automatic or nothing it's good and

[52:30] nobody should knock it on to the next

[52:31] Point buying modified cars now I

[52:34] understand that modifying is half the

[52:36] fun for a lot of people however when the

[52:38] time comes to sell when somebody's

[52:40] looking to buy a Porsche 964 they're

[52:42] looking at the poster this is what they

[52:45] have in their brain right here this is

[52:47] it anything that deviates from this the

[52:49] value you know I don't want to say the

[52:51] value because there's always a buyer for

[52:52] the car let's just say the pool of

[52:54] buyers is far less because you could

[52:57] have a really cool car but it might be

[53:00] cool to some people but not other people

[53:02] so this is something that most people

[53:04] that have owned many porsa know that

[53:06] whenever you even change the radio from

[53:08] the original Porsche unit when you do

[53:10] that you'll get better sound better

[53:12] everything however when the time comes

[53:14] to sell the buyer is not thinking wow

[53:16] great music the buyer is thinking what

[53:18] happened to the wiry what's going on

[53:21] inside there thinking about the

[53:22] liability of course so if you're looking

[53:24] to sell original is a 100 times better

[53:28] than modified if you're looking to buy

[53:30] remember that what I'm saying here is

[53:32] obvious to a lot of people and you're

[53:33] always going to pay a premium for

[53:35] originality however a lot of cars look

[53:38] original but they're not they were

[53:39] modified brought back to original and

[53:41] modified yet again this means that you

[53:43] really need to have an expert take a

[53:45] look at the car because it might look

[53:46] beautiful in pictures however in person

[53:49] you can tell it's been fooled around

[53:50] with and only the eye of somebody that

[53:52] obsesses over these cars can really tell

[53:55] in 10 seconds so if you can can find

[53:56] somebody that really knows these cars to

[53:58] take a look at them to see if they're

[53:59] really original that's worth its price

[54:01] and gold on to next one if you live in

[54:03] hot places like Miami all you really

[54:05] care about is the AC going to cool are

[54:07] you going to be sweating your off or are

[54:09] you actually going to be able to drive

[54:10] it and not arrive drenched one of the

[54:12] great things about Porsche 964 is that

[54:15] those are actually the ones that you see

[54:16] in Miami because it's hot and the air

[54:19] conditioner work you rarely see any air

[54:21] cooled 911s here in Miami unless they're

[54:24] 964 and up and the main reason reason is

[54:26] AC AC down here is like uh yeah it's

[54:29] like life support especially when it

[54:31] gets really really hot in traffic when

[54:33] there is no breeze so to get the benefit

[54:35] of the 964 completely revised HVAC

[54:38] system it needs to be R12 if you follow

[54:42] advice from magazines like this and go

[54:46] with the R134 it's just not going to

[54:48] cool as good specifically the cool down

[54:50] time you're going to be in there

[54:51] sweating until it starts cooling down

[54:54] little by little and you're just going

[54:55] to be like m this is not good this

[54:57] revised AC systems in the 964 was

[55:00] designed to run R12 not R134 the cooling

[55:04] is going to go way way down and this is

[55:06] super important not just for hot weather

[55:08] because the compressor should also be on

[55:10] when you're turning on the heater

[55:11] because the compressor dries the air

[55:14] inside the cabin so whenever you see

[55:15] conversion kits that say oh this kit

[55:18] converts your R12 to 134 all that is is

[55:22] just a little cap so you could put the

[55:23] new gas in nothing's been converted it's

[55:25] a r R12 system so if you want to have a

[55:28] good time with your 964 take it on road

[55:30] trips for thousands of miles and arrive

[55:32] in comfort as it was designed to do in

[55:34] the 964 R12 it's where it's at you can

[55:37] still buy it the only thing with the R12

[55:39] is that they just don't make it anymore

[55:41] but guess what they made so much of it

[55:42] that is still available to purchase on

[55:44] to the next one so the Porsche 964 being

[55:46] a really emotional car if you're going

[55:48] into it clearheaded and knowing exactly

[55:50] what you're getting you ensure that your

[55:52] emotions with this car is 100% positive

[55:55] as a matter of fact it might be the one

[55:57] car that you really want to keep forever

[55:59] however on the flip side if you have a

[56:01] bad experience because you didn't do

[56:03] your due diligence and had a solid pre-

[56:05] purchase inspection it can turn sour

[56:07] really quickly and from what I've seen

[56:09] most of the bad experiences that people

[56:11] have with pora 964 are from people that

[56:14] have gotten cars that have been

[56:15] neglected that have years of deferred

[56:17] maintenance and they think it's going to

[56:19] be perfect it's not it's going to have

[56:21] issues this was an expensive car when it

[56:23] was new and it's even more expensive now

[56:25] but the good thing is that whatever you

[56:27] spend on most aircool 911s usually when

[56:30] the time comes to sell you're able to

[56:31] get your money back if you do sell

[56:33] because usually when people buy a

[56:34] Porsche 964 it's the one they keep

[56:36] because there are few cars that are

[56:38] better in the driveway than in the

[56:40] poster and the Porsche 964 is definitely

[56:43] one of them that's the Porsche 964 used

[56:45] 993s regularly sell for over $100,000

[56:49] more selling for more than they did when

[56:52] they first came out into the showroom it

[56:54] looks expensive to anybody who doesn't

[56:56] understand what the air cooled 911

[56:58] market is when Porsche finished making

[56:59] the 993 they didn't replace that car the

[57:02] 993 is the last 911 so it's the last not

[57:06] just air cold because when you say it

[57:08] was the last Air Cold you're only

[57:09] talking about the engine no the entire

[57:11] car is the last of that era and it was

[57:13] never replaced all that move from that

[57:15] era to the new era is the badge and the

[57:18] naming for marketing purposes there is

[57:19] no a latest and greatest because that is

[57:22] the latest and greatest so since the car

[57:24] was never replaced everybody wants there

[57:26] is no comparable and that's driving up

[57:28] prices the 993 in particular is very

[57:31] interesting when you say Market forces

[57:33] drive up a car's price you can say that

[57:36] just about any used car that has gone up

[57:39] in value the air cooled 911s are

[57:41] different in that the demand is a

[57:43] recognition of the value that you get

[57:45] with those cars let me explain whenever

[57:47] you see Supply demand arguments used to

[57:50] describe a car's astronomical price

[57:52] going up is usually forces that are

[57:54] external there are a lot of classic cars

[57:57] that have gone up in value because of

[57:59] external forces pop culture a movie or

[58:01] several movies all of these external

[58:04] forces can get the car and raise its

[58:07] value regardless of the quality of the

[58:09] car and that happens a lot you see that

[58:11] everywhere in the used car market the

[58:13] reason that the 993 and aircool 911s but

[58:16] specifically the 993 are going up is

[58:18] because there was no replacement for

[58:20] that car that was the last the last of

[58:22] the last there was no cool movie that

[58:24] made his price go double no it has gone

[58:26] up because of the car and only the car

[58:29] now what do you mean the car well it's

[58:31] very interesting with this car Porsche

[58:33] in the early '90s was about to go

[58:34] bankrupt building cars like the 993 and

[58:38] the 928 so it cost them more money to

[58:41] build the car and get it to the showroom

[58:43] then what the car was actually selling

[58:44] for they were counting on variations and

[58:47] upsales in the options now a lot of

[58:49] manufactures do this but the 911 Wass

[58:51] Porsche's bread and butter by doing this

[58:53] with your main car you are at the line

[58:55] of Break Even or make profit and even

[58:58] when you do make money on the turbos on

[59:00] the higher end spec cars it's not a

[59:01] breakout profit so this was pora's

[59:03] situation all through the ' 80s and the

[59:05] '90s so much so that they almost went

[59:07] bankrupt building cars that are more

[59:10] expensive to make than what you're

[59:12] selling them for and that all changed

[59:14] with the boxer the boxer came in at just

[59:16] under 40,000 bucks in 1987 and the

[59:19] profit margin in the boxer was over 50%

[59:22] for Porsche now they're in business the

[59:23] end user was getting a Porsche

[59:25] experience experience for less money

[59:27] than the 911 so you can't keep a running

[59:29] company selling a product that you're

[59:30] losing money on and so they came out

[59:32] with the Boxster and it saved Porsche

[59:34] from going bankrupt and when the new

[59:35] 9911 came out after the 993 it only cost

[59:39] Porsha about 18% more to make a 911

[59:42] versus the Boxster but they were selling

[59:44] them at 9911 prices plus options of

[59:46] course it doesn't take a rocket

[59:48] scientist to tell you that you have two

[59:50] CS the 993 that Porsche was losing money

[59:52] on and the boxer which was a huge money

[59:54] maker and the 99 six so Porche went from

[59:57] almost being bankrupt to being the most

[59:59] profitable car company in the world with

[1:00:01] margins that are astronomical as a

[1:00:02] matter of fact they still are but after

[1:00:04] the dust has settled all that you're

[1:00:06] left with is the cars the actual product

[1:00:08] that was left by this switch from the

[1:00:10] old to the new and when you hold the

[1:00:12] product on itself one was a money maker

[1:00:14] for Porsche and one lost money for

[1:00:16] Porsche so now you can start seeing why

[1:00:19] the 993 is going up so much in value you

[1:00:21] get more for your money with that car

[1:00:24] even if you're paying over as new over

[1:00:27] sticker on a car that's almost 30 years

[1:00:28] old you're still getting more for your

[1:00:30] money than a newer 911 and you couldn't

[1:00:33] tell this from the road test at the time

[1:00:35] all the road test that came out at the

[1:00:37] time were glowing Praises for the new

[1:00:40] replacement a hair faster a little bit

[1:00:41] quieter stops a little bit better so the

[1:00:44] figures looked like if it was an upgrade

[1:00:46] and all it takes is just opening the

[1:00:48] door of a 993 I can do a 2our video

[1:00:50] about the 911

[1:00:53] store but there are also a whole bunch

[1:00:56] of other little things that are not as

[1:00:58] obvious as that bank fold door that that

[1:01:00] car has little things like the carpet

[1:01:03] the carpet on the 993 is sliver it from

[1:01:05] the factory it's almost like a lamb's

[1:01:07] wool and like that everything throughout

[1:01:09] the car the sea structures you remove

[1:01:11] the base of the seat on the 993 is the

[1:01:13] same one as the 928 made by ricaro it is

[1:01:17] overbuilt and expensive to make so how

[1:01:19] does that hold up over time you get in a

[1:01:22] 993 that has 100,000 Mi and you cannot

[1:01:25] tell that that car has that many miles

[1:01:27] it could have 200,000 Mi and is still in

[1:01:29] unbelievable condition because it holds

[1:01:31] up because Porche was losing money in

[1:01:33] that car bad for Porsche but it was

[1:01:35] great for the customer now since that

[1:01:36] car is gone they don't make it anymore

[1:01:38] the good thing is that you can still buy

[1:01:39] one and they're so overbuilt that it

[1:01:41] doesn't matter if it's almost 30 years

[1:01:43] old it's as good as new it is that

[1:01:45] impressive now people know what those

[1:01:46] cars are and they all want a little bit

[1:01:48] of 993 and I can't blame them the 993 is

[1:01:52] the most beautiful car that has ever

[1:01:54] been made period it's so beautiful that

[1:01:56] Porsche has been trying to get back to

[1:01:58] that 993 look with every model starting

[1:02:01] with the 997 The 997 looks more like a

[1:02:03] 993 the 991 even the new 992 has

[1:02:07] standard wide body that you should have

[1:02:08] to pay extra for very difficult in a new

[1:02:10] car with crash regulations so the car

[1:02:12] keeps getting bigger and bigger but not

[1:02:14] quite as beautiful as the 93 now the car

[1:02:16] is not only about build quality or looks

[1:02:18] however it is a big factor what makes

[1:02:20] the 993 so cool is that it's a 1960s car

[1:02:24] and it ended in the 99 3 you can get a

[1:02:26] door from a 1997 Porsche 993 and put it

[1:02:30] on a 1975 Porsche 911 it bolts on

[1:02:33] incredible so even though the structure

[1:02:35] is the same it was stiffened refined the

[1:02:38] suspension was completely redone several

[1:02:40] times especially for the 993 up from the

[1:02:43] 964 the engine kept getting bigger and

[1:02:46] bigger but it kept a lot of weird things

[1:02:48] so if you got floor hinged pedals like

[1:02:50] an old Beetle it's funny and since

[1:02:51] you're driving a 1960s car with modern

[1:02:54] Porsche performance you still have the

[1:02:56] big rmo brakes you still have that Flat

[1:02:58] 6 engine you still have that six-speed

[1:03:00] you have modern air conditioner so you

[1:03:02] can actually drive it and hop places

[1:03:04] like for example here in Miami you can

[1:03:06] daily drive that car and be entertained

[1:03:08] all the time that's part of the reason

[1:03:09] why those cars are so expensive you can

[1:03:11] use them every single day you don't have

[1:03:12] to use them only on the weekends the

[1:03:14] maintenance on that car is very low

[1:03:16] especially compared to the earlier

[1:03:18] aircooled 911s there's no Val

[1:03:19] adjustments remember it's Decades of

[1:03:21] refinement in that 993 engine and the

[1:03:24] brakes are almost comical more than

[1:03:25] sufficient for that car and it's got a

[1:03:27] six speeed but six is actually an

[1:03:29] acceleration gear because that car does

[1:03:31] top end in sixth gear not fifth so six

[1:03:34] is not an overdrive you have six usable

[1:03:36] gears now since Porsche was counting on

[1:03:38] making money on variations of the car

[1:03:41] and selling them for more countless

[1:03:42] variation of that car came out all-wheel

[1:03:44] drive convertibles Target turbo ybody

[1:03:47] add to that the list of options that you

[1:03:49] could have had any color anything as

[1:03:51] long as you paid for it that's how

[1:03:53] Porsche stayed afloat with the 993 and

[1:03:55] that's great for the the customer

[1:03:56] because there's so many versions of the

[1:03:57] 993 that there's something for everybody

[1:04:00] but the nicest ones you're going to pay

[1:04:01] the most for 993 turbos you're going to

[1:04:04] pay 993 wi bodies you're also going to

[1:04:07] pay and the only deals that you can

[1:04:08] possibly find on a 993 are going to be

[1:04:10] the convertibles and some of the target

[1:04:13] cuz the target are still super nice and

[1:04:14] that's to be understood because that all

[1:04:16] comes down to where you live if you live

[1:04:18] in Miami having a 993 convertible is 365

[1:04:21] day a year experience it's heaven but if

[1:04:24] you have it in Michigan where it's snows

[1:04:26] that heaven becomes a liability and it

[1:04:28] limits the use of the car remember these

[1:04:30] cars are daily drivers if you have to

[1:04:31] store the car you're storing the fund

[1:04:33] and of obviously the price goes down the

[1:04:35] prices relative to other porchas have

[1:04:37] stayed going up constantly except for

[1:04:40] one initial dip when the boxer and the

[1:04:42] 996 came out when those cars came out

[1:04:44] the marketing on the newer water cooled

[1:04:46] cars was overwhelming and the used

[1:04:49] prices especially on the basic 993s went

[1:04:51] down and stayed lower for a couple years

[1:04:54] I remember in the early 20

[1:04:56] you can get a 993s in the teens that

[1:04:58] doesn't exist today that was all the

[1:05:00] marketing that Porsche was pushing out

[1:05:02] with the newer cars a suppressed the

[1:05:04] market but obviously the cream has to

[1:05:06] rise to the top anyways and incept for

[1:05:07] that initial dip that maybe lasted 3 4

[1:05:10] years the prices started going up they

[1:05:12] might stall for a couple years and then

[1:05:14] back up again that's that car's market

[1:05:15] and I don't see that changing the car is

[1:05:17] not a marketing car the car is the real

[1:05:19] deal whatever you spend on that car your

[1:05:21] money secure so it's expensive but

[1:05:23] relative to what you could spend $45

[1:05:25] ,000 bucks on a new Minivan and in 5

[1:05:27] years you can't even give it away on a

[1:05:28] 993 you could spend $80 $100,000 enjoy

[1:05:32] the car for a couple years and then set

[1:05:33] it for the same or more and if anything

[1:05:36] that trend is going to accelerate

[1:05:38] because it's a usable investment not

[1:05:40] only the most beautiful car ever made it

[1:05:43] is the best investment regardless of

[1:05:45] price because you get to enjoy it as it

[1:05:48] stays or goes up in value and you can

[1:05:50] say that about all air cooled 911s but

[1:05:53] the 993 in particular now you know
