Steam Machine Price Shocks Gamers
39sThe $1,049 starting price is shocking and sparks debate about PC vs console value.
▶ Play ClipThis video covers two major gaming news stories: the final price reveal for Valve's Steam Machine and the surprising revelation that God of War: La Faye has been in development for nearly a decade. It provides details on pricing and bundles for the Steam Machine and discusses the behind-the-scenes planning of the new God of War title.
Valve announced the Steam Machine starting at $1,049 for a 512 GB version, with a bundle including the Steam controller for $1,128. A 2 TB model is also available at $1,349 or $1,428 with the controller.
Pre-orders are available on Steam. The machine is a mini gaming PC, and despite its high price compared to consoles, it offers competitive pricing relative to other small form factor gaming PCs.
The 2 TB model includes two additional face plates for customization. The pricing reflects recent increases in PC component costs, especially RAM, which has driven up costs beyond initial speculation of $700-$800.
Deborah Ann Woll revealed in an interview that she learned about God of War: La Faye nearly a decade ago. Director Cory Barlog pitched the idea to her in 2018, and it has been planned since before then, with a poster featuring her character in a cube dating back to the 2018 game.
PlayStation has confirmed there will be more God of War stories featuring Kratos, alongside the upcoming La Faye game, though no release date has been announced.
The Steam Machine is now available for pre-order at a premium price, while God of War fans can look forward to a long-planned spin-off and continued adventures with Kratos.

2:25[00:00] What's up everybody? Damon here and for
[00:01] today's daily fix, we have the Steam
[00:03] Machine's [music] price finally revealed
[00:05] and just how long God of War La has been
[00:07] planned. [music] This is your daily fix.
[00:18] [snorts]
[00:19] Presented by Universal Orlando Resort
[00:21] and its newest theme [music] park,
[00:22] Universal Epic Universe.
[00:26] After months of speculation, the Steam
[00:28] Machine is finally here. starting at
[00:30] $1,049 for the 512 gig version. If that
[00:33] price is still within your budget, you
[00:34] can reserve it now on Steam. That
[00:37] starting price gets you just the 512 gig
[00:39] version of the mini gaming PC without
[00:41] the Steam controller. If you want to add
[00:42] the controller, there is a bundle for
[00:44] $1,28, which means you're getting
[00:46] Valve's controller for $79 rather than
[00:48] the 99 bucks it'll cost you by itself.
[00:50] Valve is also selling a two terbte model
[00:52] which will set you back 1,349 for just
[00:55] the machine or 1428 bundled with the
[00:58] Steam controller. That's a steep price
[01:00] to be sure, but Valve is packing two
[01:02] additional face plates with every two TB
[01:04] console. So, you at least get some added
[01:05] customization options. Way back when
[01:07] Valve first revealed the Steam machine,
[01:08] we guessed it would cost somewhere
[01:09] around $7 to $800. We were probably
[01:12] right at the time, but the costs for PC
[01:14] components, particularly RAM, have
[01:16] skyrocketed over the last 6 months. That
[01:19] 149 is going to be a hard pill to
[01:20] swallow for anyone weighing it against
[01:22] the PS5 or Xbox Series X, both of which
[01:24] are more affordable, at least for now.
[01:26] But while the Steam Machine is quite a
[01:27] bit more expensive than any of the
[01:28] gaming consoles, it is still a gaming
[01:30] PC. And in that world, the Steam
[01:32] Machine's price tag isn't quite as
[01:34] painful, especially when you consider
[01:35] how tiny it is. Many gaming PCs with
[01:37] this kind of horsepower can cost
[01:39] hundreds more than the Steam Machine
[01:40] currently does. Moving on, God of War:
[01:43] La Fay, featuring Kratos's wife Fay as
[01:45] his protagonist, may have come as a
[01:46] surprise to some, but not to its star,
[01:48] Deborah Anwal, who first heard about the
[01:50] project almost a decade ago. She
[01:52] revealed in an interview with CGM, I've
[01:54] known about this for nearly 10 years,
[01:56] and I haven't been able to talk about
[01:57] it. The Daredevil actor went on to say
[01:59] that the director of God of War's 2018
[02:00] reboot, Cory Barlo, not only told her
[02:02] about this plan way back around the time
[02:04] of that game's release, but also knew
[02:06] that it would feature one of her
[02:07] sidekicks in the reveal trailer, Jack
[02:09] Quig's Talking Cube. Wall said he
[02:11] pitched it to me in 2018 and they had
[02:12] known about it before then. It's wild.
[02:14] Like when Corey brought me in to talk
[02:15] about doing Ragnarok and show me the
[02:17] 2018 game, he already had a poster for
[02:19] the La game with me in a cube. A cube
[02:21] that's been there since the beginning.
[02:23] It's deeply a part of the lore. We still
[02:24] don't know when we'll be playing God of
[02:26] War Lay, but fear not Kratos fans, there
[02:28] will be more games featuring everyone's
[02:30] favorite angry Greek god with
[02:31] PlayStation saying there are many more
[02:33] stories to tell. And that is your daily
[02:35] fix for Monday, June 22nd. [music] Now
[02:37] that you're caught up on the news, watch
[02:38] our Steam Machine review. I'm Damon
